Not as it was, but an enjoyable stay.

This was our 3rd visit to St James’s Club and although we had a relaxing break the hotel is not the elegant resort that it once was. We enjoyed the food, especially from The Pier restaurant, however service was inconsistent throughout the resort restaurants, with long waits to be seated. Although Treetops restaurant had a good atmosphere, the pizza and lasagne were not great. Breakfasts were good, with plenty of choice. We also enjoyed the Plum Grill for a quiet lunch under shade. We used the gym every day which was well equipped, however I’m pretty sure I ran on the same treadmills there 10 years ago. The functions do not work properly and there are holes in the belt. The best thing about this resort is the staff. 5 stars to Kennedy, who spoke to us on our walks through the grounds, always so cheerful, Thomasia and Diana who gave us wonderful table service, Hermanda & Melina, who took great effort and care in serving our coffees, Allison in the Hilltop bar who was so attentive to all the guests around the pool, Christiania who serviced our room beautifully and finally Sherman, who remembered our names throughout our stay and gave great service. One thing for sure, these staff are all so positive for the future of the hotel and definitely enhanced our stay. We look forward to returning to St Lucia, a beautiful island with warm & friendly people.

Great resort but you get what you pay for

Really enjoyed our time at St James Club and can’t understand why there are so many poor/average reviews. So long as you understand that this isn’t a 5-star luxury resort and if it were it would cost double then you can only be happy with what you get. It’s in a beautiful quiet bay with it’s own private beach which had an incredible view of the sunset. There are 5 restaurants for evening meals as well as 2 snack bars. The restaurant booking system could be improved but there’s no reason why you can’t eat at one of the nicer restaurants (rather than the buffet) any time you want to so long as you’re organised and plan in advance. The good: - Free water sports (paddle boards, kayaks, water skiing, cat sailing) - Great staff - Lots of bars - Pretty good quality alcohol (e.g. French Blanc de Blanc) - WiFi almost everywhere - Lovely beach - Great restaurant on a small private pier - Well equipped gym and tennis courts - Courtesy room at checkout The bad - The restaurant booking system (bookings made 3 days in advance at the concierge desk for whichever restaurants are open during the available days) - Rooms are tired. (Annoyingly our courtesy room at checkout was newly refurbished and lovely!) - The buffet restaurant was pretty average - Between 5-6pm the beach bar was closed and the sunset bar wasn’t open yet so there were queues at the pool bar just when people wanted drinks for sunset. - Very steep slopes around the complex which wouldn’t be good for people with mobility issues - No WiFi at the top pool & bar - Often there was different music at different parts of the resort which, depending where you’re sat, could both be heard causing a mess of noise - Room cleaning was unclear. We had fresh towels but bed not made a couple of times and bed made but no fresh towels at other times. All things considered would definitely recommend, but as a budget friendly St Lucia option that isn’t quite a luxury resort. I’d say that if they refurb all the rooms and make a few improvements to things like the restaurant bookings and resort communications, it may no longer be budget friendly!

A lovely week, some excellent features and some really lacking.

Spent a week at the St James Club in November 2022. St Lucia itself was beautiful and thankfully we had minimal rain which made for a really lovely week on the island. The St James Club was good, not great. I'll start with the positives. Some of the staff are absolutely excellent - so positive and welcoming - jumping on the bandwagon here for Ezekiel - this guy deserves his own TV show. There is plentiful water sports and a nice open space of ocean to utilise them on, the queueing/sign up sheet system for this is a bit odd, with a sign up sheet but then people seeming to just go in whatever order. The room up on the hill we had was spacious with a fantastically comfortable bed and a good view of the resort and the ocean. The drinks on the all inclusive package do flow all day, and there is good choice and plenty of bars to get them from! Water is available from stations and the tap water is safe to drink. The pool and sea areas are clean and the beach is beautifully raked everyday. It's not the crystal clear water you'd expect but it's a sandy beach you can easily wade all the way out and it's an understandable trade off. Morgan's Pier restaurant was lovely, with beautiful seating over the water and the best food of the week. The breakfast buffet is also good, fresh omelettes and fruit! We were offered a courtesy room to shower and change in before our late flight and the bathroom here was recently refurbished and lovely! Joys Cruises is a delight - they are based at the resort and well worth a day out, it's a great social and you get to experience some more of the island. Now the negatives - firstly the service is incredibly hit and miss, sometimes it's impeccable and other times it can be practically non existent. The choice of restaurants in the evening is fine, but the buffet was only open a couple of nights throughout the week and the food in here was poor. We didn't pay extra for the Jardin, but we ate in each of the other speciality restaurants and all were fine. It's standard all inclusive fair but not special. The problem with the "all inclusive" is that outside of meal times there is very little food available. Would have loved some ice cream at any point! The bathroom in our room on the hill was very dated, with cracking paintwork and a dribble of water pressure. Honestly not worth using. We were visited by one cockroach through the week, although not typical of a five star resort this is the tropics so not worth overly complaining about. Overall we had a lovely week, I would be really interested to see what the hotel is like after the refurb it's getting in the spring. It has some lovely features and I hope they retain the best of the staff who really are a credit to it. With some changes and upkeep it could be the five star resort it aspires to be.

7th visit we will be back

7 trip to the hotel amazing as always food and drink great. Stayed in one of newly refurbished beach front room, new bathrooms much improved thanks. The hotel is set in beautifully manicured grounds which are tended daily by a great team. Tried all the restaurants except le jardin all amazing particularly liked the pier. Definitely be back just hope new owners don’t change things too much.

November 7th Holiday 15 Nights.

We just got back from our holiday with after an overall positive experience. The star of the show here are the staff, they are genuinely so friendly and nice. Particularly worthy of mention are : Allison at the Hilltop Pool, her singing and dancing to her music which was thoughtfully never too loud was infectious, and great attention to who's glass was empty. Shervall has a great smile and was always lovely, we enjoyed our chats about her life plans and her little dog at home. Markus was always on hand, he clearly takes great pleasure from showing people around and he is clearly proud of St. James', a real gentleman. Harold in the Jacaranda is probably the coolest cocktail Barman in the whole of the Caribbean, and his Stand-in Cameron has great drinks suggestions if anyone needs guidance. Harold even brought in a set of jewellers screwdrivers so I could repair Lynnes Glasses! His Son Montell and his colleagues around the resort are really attentive.Ezekiel at the beach is magic. A negative is the music at the various bars is generally too loud, they overlap with one another and it's impossible to just relax as a result, at times it was necessary to request a change and volume reduction, the genre of music was simply too aggressive on numerous occasions, particularly at the otherwise idyllic beach dinner bbq. Forget relaxing Caribbean calypso, and embrace a weird mix of reggae and gangster rap, some of which laced with foul lyrics. The food, whilst being a way off fine dining is perfectly nice, buffets are hit and miss like all buffets. Morgan's Pier was the best option, all dishes beautifully cooked and nicely presented, and the location over the water with the sound of the waves beneath (when not drowned out by some iffy Reggae drum and bass)! When Lynne asked for the music to be changed on our last night, our waitress suggested we ignore it. Le Jardin food was lovely, but the service was bizarre, we were asked to sign the chit before the coffee course at five to ten, then ignored and made to feel it was time to leave with our waitress leaning against the wall in the entrance. Not really worth the extra charge. The breakfast buffet is more than adequate for all tastes, yes there are cats here and there, but they are in no way intrusive, nor are the typical Caribbean birds, which add charm and entertainment. Neither are really worthy of the extreme negativity mentioned on other reviews in my opinion. If you go with an open mind and reasonable expectations then you will have a great stay, any negatives I've mentioned are far outweighed by the countless positives. Special thanks and genuine affection go to all we mentioned or forgot to, and not forgetting Dan who drove us around the resort on a buggy in the middle of the night for the hell of it after we staggered out of Harold's bar at the end of another great day. Dan is softly spoken and great fun, he spotted me and greeted me and Lynne by name, what laughs we had with him talking about one challenging solo guest who will remain nameless !!!! If you know, you know. Rather than ask the inconsiderate smokers who just drop their fag butts in the pristine sand, they rake the entire beach daily and clean up after them. To ensure that inevitable culinary monotony is minimised, they set up tables on the beach on several nights and introduce variety in food and location. People generally seemed to enjoy the Joy Cruise, but we immediately decided it wouldn't be for us judging by the collective raucous singing of the returning participants! The main bar area for the evenings is very pleasant, with varied entertainment from singers to fire eaters. Any bar which includes a pool and table tennis table isn't for us but seemed popular with those for whom it didn't resemble a working mens' club. We preferred the Jacaranda with the premium brands and Harold! We are lucky enough to hear Phyness sing and her partner Rob Zii on Sax, these two are world class, we saw her solo the first Tuesday, then with Rob the following Tuesday. She even came and picked us up to see him DJ and play sax on the last Sunday off resort at the Naked Fisherman, great afternoon and huge thanks to them.
