New management

I have spent two weeks at Secrets Resort Saint Martin. There are mixed reviews left by many guests who stayed at this resort. Let me start by saying that all of them makes sense in their own ways. Pros: the Location of the resort is exquisite. It is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Rooms are nice and clean. The beach is very private and water is clear. Cons: If you are a picky eater and know about your food, this place is not for you. If you are an average eater, you will be fine. Also, staff needs to be trained much better in terms of hospitality and sense of urgency. But again, it doesn’t apply to all the staff who works there. For instance, breakfast/lunch staff like Evelyn, Osra, Charmin, Constant, Antoinette were all great. Dinner staff: Matthew, Jendera( sorry if I'm misspelling your name) we’re also great. Furthermore, this place doesn’t have much entertainment. If you are looking for this type of adventure, then you shouldn't come here. It is a wonderful place for people who want to just relax. There will be some music at night, but it is usually quiet after 10 pm. I personally liked it because this is what I was looking for from my vacation. Yes, there are lots of improvement has to be made to give the best experience to the guests. Good news is Secrets Resort has a new GM, Bernard Mazet who has been working there for the last six months. I had a pleasure of meeting him in person. He has been working on improving the overall experience of this resort. I’ve seen him around the Resort as early as 8 am to 9 pm. When I first arrived at the resort, I had a few complaints that I addressed right away. Later on, GM himself reached out to listen to my complaints. He is a very down to earth person. He took his time and listened to my complaint. Not only that, but he settled it very smoothly as much as he could. I’m sure Secrets Resort will turn into a great Resort under his management. My suggestion to unhappy guests is to address your concerns as early as you can. Instead of leaving a negative review. It might change your vacation experience for the better. Also, it helps both you and hotel to improve the overall experience.

Secrets Resort 06/12/20/2022

I was a single guest among couples on their honey moon and celebrating their anniversaries however that should not be a reason to be ignored upon my arrival. I was totally ignored by all the staff. Christian (the first representative)and handed a map to find everything on my own. To have paid for an all inclusive and to have to beg for a glass of champagne while being among the other guest was an awful first hand experience. I did get one day to Dutch side to go shopping which was the best part of the 6 day experience. The waiters and waitress in the different restaurants were very nice . I ordered room service and did not get the salad at all that I ordered. The foods at the buffet were okay. The travel agent Natalie Wayne at Top Notch Travel did nothing to correct this nor take responsibility for this during my trip.

Secrets St. Maarten is a cozy little place for a couples retreat. My wife and I went down with my brother and his wife but my first initial thought once we arrived was disappointment. The grounds are not well kept and it certainly did not have the luxurious Secrets feel to it. My wife and I have been to several Secrets with Secrets Los Cabos being the latest. IF YOU TRY TO COMPARE IT TO ANY OTHER SECRETS, YOU WILL BE VERY DISAPPOINTED. The rooms were just fine and I have zero complaints (thankfully) but other than that physically the resort was lacking. The crew was for the most part very courteous and helpful. Alicia at the CoCo Cafe was absolutely fantastic. We loved her. On the negative side, the workers at the Barefoot Grill were very rude. We stopped by on our first day and was so put off by their rudeness we NEVER returned. All in all, this resort just does not compare to any of the other Secrets we've visited. They seem to lack resources and staff to give you all that is expected from the brand. I do believe they are still feeling the effects of the hurricane and pandemic. This is a decent resort to visit but not at its current price point. I truly believe Secrets should remove its name from the resort and move it under one of its other brands because this resort is not Secrets quality. I will never return to this resort.

Should have stayed a Secret

Well we paid for an upgraded room with Mountain View’s. We received initially a room overlooking the abandoned hotel next door. It wasn’t until the second day that they moved us to a room with a better view even though half the resort rooms were empty. The property calls itself all inclusive, but has hardly any staff so there is no drinks delivered poolside or by the beach. If you want a drink you have to go get it yourself. Only one restaurant open per day and that was usually the buffet serving the same food over and over and over. You’re good if you like burgers and hot dogs on a daily basis. The poolside eatery was closed the entire stay. Had one decent dinner in seven nights and I asked for another serving and was told that they don’t do additional servings at dinner. The pool filter was broken and off for two days causing the pool to start to grow algae, you can tell when it’s off because their little waterfall fountains don’t come on and the infinity aspect of the pool isn’t there due to water level dropping. The room was comfortable but no bottle of spirits just some water and soda in mini fridge with a few cans of Presidente beer. Your daily refilled snacks were a two ounce plastic tub of Pringles and 1 bag of peanut M&M’s how luxurious????. If you didn’t eat or hide then you didn’t get more. Zero non motorized sports available. I saw some kayaks in the lagoon area, but was told I wasn’t allowed to swim out to get them, it was beyond the swim area. No hobie cats or anything of that nature. They had jet skis available Next to the resorts beach for 80 dollars per half hour per person ??. One night my wife and I didn’t eat dinner because we were nauseous from the food at lunch, another burger that we had to ask them to cook better, raw in the middle. This was my first secrets experience and will be my last. Hopefully Hyatt the new owners can turn it around but I won’t be going to any former AMResort.

Great vacation!

Do not focus on the terrible reviews! Secrets Saint Martin is great! We just spent 6 days here and have zero complaints. Let me start by saying that this is not a brand new resort. The former Rui property was purchased by Secrets and has been renovated but not completely rebuilt. The property is absolutely beautiful and it’s ok with me that some of the resort is a little “weathered” there is nothing wrong with that at all! The only reason I bring it up is so that people can get their expectations in check. This is not a $2000 per night mega-resort and I certainly hope nobody is paying that much to stay here, but some of the petty complaints in some of the reviews make it sound like they were expecting the quality of a Ritz Carlton or some other big name resort chain that is way above a normal person’s budget. Let me also say that I have previously stayed at Secrets Maroma Beach (Mexico), Secrets the Vine Cancun (Mexico), and Secrets Royal Beach Punta Cana (Dominican Republic). This resort is definitely smaller and has a more “authentic Caribbean” feel to it which I liked. The lobby was open air and very nice. We checked in at the preferred club, which was small but also very nice. Check in was a breeze and the preferred club bartender was very friendly and made us both welcome drinks of our choice and they were fantastic! We were taken to our room (7104) a preferred club swim out suite with marina view. Room: The room was very nice and very clean. It was not moldy or musty smelling at all. Yes, there were a few scuff marks on the wall but who cares, you find that at literally every hotel (they can’t repaint between every guest)! Housekeeping did an excellent job and came everyday without being requested and turndown service was also excellent and came every night. We loved our patio and the swim out pool and used it everyday! Our view was of the mountains and of the canal leading to the marina so we couldn’t see all of the boats docked at the marina but we could see all the boats going by on their way in and out of the marina, it was great! Food: We ordered room service for breakfast 3 mornings and enjoyed eating out on our patio overlooking our swim up pool. Yes there are only 2 breakfast choices but it was perfect for us (continental breakfast or American breakfast, we got one of each and shared everything). The breakfast buffet was excellent (I don’t like buffets) with a wide array of choices including an omelette station, pancakes, French toast, fresh fruit, and much much more, literally nothing to complain about! We did not try the buffet for lunch or dinner. The barefoot grill for lunch was excellent, one day we got pizza which was good, and another day we got cheeseburgers with French fries which were excellent! For dinner we ate at Portofino, Olio, the steakhouse which was a special a la carte night at the buffet, and there was also a special Caribbean night at barefoot grill for dinner, which was our favorite. All of the food was excellent! I have no idea what all of the food complaints are about. I will say each night the options are limited, basically 2 appetizers, 3 entrees, and 2 desserts to choose from. We had zero issues with our choices and loved everything we ate! Caribbean night at barefoot grill was a predetermined menu of one appetizer, one entree, and cream brûlée for dessert. It was all excellent! So if you are a super picky eater or have a lot of dietary restrictions you might be disappointed with the food options however I would imagine that as time goes on and as supply issues and staffing issues improve they will probably expand their menus. There were 3 or 4 dining options open every night. We also ate dinner one night at the Italian restaurant just off the property across the street and it was very good. It was nice to have that option even though it wasn’t needed for us since we enjoyed the food on the resort. Staff/Service: Excellent service! Every staff member we encountered was wonderful!! Entertainment: I personally enjoyed the nightly entertainment. All of the musicians were excellent! I also enjoyed that there was no big entertainment shows at night, I am not into the circus shows or newly wed games. The sports bar was open every night which was nice but had karaoke every night which also is not my cup of tea. But at least there were options! Property/Grounds: The property and grounds are beautiful. The location is absolutely stunning surrounded by mountains. Everything was well maintained and beautifully landscaped. I saw a review complaining about the walkways which is craziness to me, who cares if all of the walkways aren’t brand new and don’t look the same! Also, I read a complaint about the lack of security, there is a security guard out front which is nice but no additional security is needed since the resort area is surrounded by mountains and ocean and it takes effort to get to the resort, there are no drug cartels in Saint Martin so there is nothing to worry about there! Beach/Ocean/Pool: The beach and ocean were perfect! The beach was approximately a half mile long and it was pristine! The ocean was beautiful, very clear with very small waves and zero seaweed. You literally cannot ask for more, it was perfect! There were plenty of chairs and umbrellas at the beach and at the pool. Yes, some of the umbrellas were partly broken but still functional so it was not an issue, people honestly just look for things to complain about. Also the beach service was great but if you need your drinks quicker than the beach server can deliver them, the bar is just steps from the beach. The pool was huge and not freezing which was great! It is obviously not a brand new pool like the rendering photo but it’s a great pool with a swim up bar and 2 walk up bars, and the drinks are NOT watered down so be careful! We loved this resort and will definitely be back! We loved the whole island of Saint Martin and were glad we rented a car and visited orient bay beach, grand case beach, mullet bay, and maho bay! If you are not a picky person who is looking for things to complain about and can appreciate the beauty of a Caribbean island, then book a trip here ASAP you will love it!
