Don’t even know where to start !! First off how can you charge full price on your all inclusive fees when you’re only offering about 10 percent of the things you normally offer ? Supposed to be 6 restaurants but the first night I was there( and I’ve only been here 1 full day) the only restaurant that was open was the Italian restaurant and the Mediterranean on the day of arrival and they weren’t both open but rather combined on one menu. My seafood appetizer was several Mrs Paul’s deep fried fish sticks with 1 deep fried shrimp and 1 deep fried what they called calamari and half of it was cold. The lobster ravioli wasn’t even lobster but they said it was crab instead. Enough with that meal and I didn’t even go into my wife’s meal. Liquor selection at the bars is bottom shelf and that’s a compliment. Most of the time you’re lucky to find a bar that’s open except for the front lobby bar. The runs they have are Bacardi clear and dark or Havana Club, they don’t even carry the guava berry rum that the island is known for. The only tequila is Jose Cuervo. Don’t even remember what other garbage liquors they had but there was nothing special. Oh and this evening the special meal offered is a buffet .......
the shower to get ready for supper was memorable, my wife says hey come here all the water is running out in the bathroom. I go in there to see a flood of water running out in the bathroom and none going down the drain. I call the front desk after throwing all our towels on the floor to soak up the water. They send maintenance which takes a toilet plunger to the drain. Lol then he takes a screw driver and pulls the drain cover off to expose a strainer full of god knows how many past patrons that have lost hair to the shower drain. Scrapes it out and piles it up in the floor of the shower and says your good now, call the front desk and have someone come and clean it up. Yeah this is the first full day, can’t wait to get back to you folks at the end of the week with the rest of my experience !!
Disappointing Stay at Secrets St Martin
Sep 18, 2021
My husband and I honeymooned at Secrets: Playa Mujeres in March 2018 and had an absolutely wonderful experience. Everything about it exceeded our expectations: the food, the service, the staff, the venue - all 5 stars! It was our first Secrets experience and from the moment we stepped onto the grounds, we vowed it wouldn’t be our last. Every staff member knew us by name, our drinks were hurriedly filled when they were just halfway, and the team rallied around us to help us celebrate the start of our marriage. Everything about that trip was magnificent and will go down as one of our favorite and best vacations we have ever been on!
Based on that prior experience, we booked this trip to Secrets: St. Martin based on the brand loyalty and goodwill built by the Secrets brand from our experience in Playa Mujeres. Perhaps naively, we did not consult our travel agent for recommendations—we solely placed our trust in the Secrets brand and level of excellence. Our first international trip since the pandemic, we were thrilled by the opportunity to trade the hustle and bustle of work and home life for rest and relaxation in such a beautiful part of the world. From our first moments in Secrets St. Martin, it was evident that this would be an entirely different experience. The staff, while gracious, kind, and incredibly diligent, are visibly overworked (Rolinda, Margarita, and Stan are solely running operations—everything from activities and bartending to concierge and transportation to everything in between). Restaurants (the ones that are open) are staffed with a single server who also handles the check-in process (Thoegene, Matthieu, and Melinda are MVPs who work all-day shifts). We still reflect fondly on our daily activity service at Playa Mujeres (afternoon pool games, bartending and cooking classes, casino nights, and variety shows) and were looking forward for the quintessential Secrets entertainment at St. Martin, which is lacking—again, staff and outside musicians are doing their best but the experience has not held a candle to our previous experience. The landscaping left much to be desired with the grass knee-high around the quad and weeds creeping through sidewalk cracks and snaking up the stairways. Our room was extremely clean yet, was lacking fundamental amenities - the rainfall shower was broken and our shower drain was clogged. After maintenance was unable to service those items after two nights, we were given the option to relocate to a new room and were promptly greeted with a malfunctioning balcony door and ants (which, we were informed, “is common in the Caribbean hot weather,” insinuating that we should just deal with the ants).
Some other items that contributed to our disappointing experience:
Fitness center air conditioning broken
Treadmills only go to a maximum of 6.0 mph (a slow jog pace)
Bikes and ellipticals in fitness center not working
Mini fridge in room never refilled
Shower from beach to pool broken
Sports bar closed for all of September
One restaurant open each evening
Limited pool floats
Kayaking, paddle boarding, and other water sports were closed
Limited pool menu (salad, burger, or hot dog)
We are empathetic towards the devastation the island has undergone over the past four years—from a hurricane to a pandemic that has so vehemently threatened the primary source of economic development for the country. Its people are strong, resilient, and hardworking. However, for a resort to be operating at 22% capacity and employing a staff so overworked that they were pulling extra shifts and wearing too many hats, quite frankly, is not the Secrets experience.
Upon this week of disappointment, we will not be returning to Secret St. Martins and transparently, we will think long and hard about booking another Secrets branded resort experience. We do not feel like we got our money’s worth with expectations that were boldly unmet. This was not a 5-star experience. Our loyalty in the Secrets brand has been compromised. During this time in our lives, we are building our family vacation narrative, planning for the future, and were anticipating consistent Secrets trips to connect as a family. We will not be recommending Secrets to friends, family, or colleagues.
