Relaxing week at beach

Just returned yesterday from Paradisus Princesa del mar Varadero regular side. Hotel nice, room nice and clean, good size. Hair dryer, iron in room. Hot water nice tub and shower. Check in unusual, surrendered passport until you can get into room 1 hour. Sunwing rep was good but busy for our meeting . Food hit and miss. A la cartes we had were good. Japanese was popular and booked up. Breakfast was our favourite on buffet with omelette prepared for us. Shows were fabulous. Seating could have been better. Snack bar is small, not many options . We had to leave resort at 7am day home , buffet wasn't open yet for breakfast and snack bar had no ready made sandwich or easy grab food to take. Resorts are close together. Didnt like vendors on the beach further down from us

Our week at the Paradisus Princesca Del Mar

Here is my honest review and I’ll start with the positives. The grounds on this resort are beautiful. Everything is laid out very well and is very convenient. We were on the top floor of the 4000 building and faced inward toward the pool with partial sunsets. We were a short walk to everything. (We noted the v.i.p. section wasn’t as convenient - but there was a trolley). Our king bed room was large, clean and tastefully decorated with a nice balcony. The pool area is very picturesque, easy to get chairs at 8am and very sunny. No umbrella’s, so bring a good hat and if it gets too hot, just turn your chair away from the sun. The gentleman who organizes the pool chairs was very helpful and was always cheerful. We started every morning off with cappuccino’s and champagne in the lobby bar. Perfect. The beach is gorgeous and the 3 beach bar staff at the beach bar were all great! Lots of chairs available every day. Great for long walks and very little seaweed. The BBQ grill was good, but needs more seating for people who just want to have a drink and watch the entertainment. Excellent solo musician the day we ate there. Snack bar is also good and convenient. (please fix the coffee maker) The outdoor entertainment area is really nice and close to several restaurants and the cigar bar. More seating is definitely needed for the entertainment shows. There is a lot of the room behind the tables where they can put rows of chairs for guests so they don’t have to stand. Most of the staff are very friendly and do their best to be helpful. The staff who really stood out to us and made our trip more enjoyable are: Yaremis - entertainment staff Yaimara - buffet staff - always smiling Yirenia - Japanese restaurant Giovanni - lobby bar Victor- night entertainment waiter Thank you for going the extra mile and taking pride in your job. It shows. And the negatives, unfortunately. Smoking. It is everywhere and there are no designated areas. My main beef with smoking is in the dining areas. Even though some restaurant areas are outside, there is nothing worse than eating while people are smoking are all around you. Step out of the dining areas like most of you have to do at home. It’s just common courtesy. Bars are fair game, but the restaurants should not allow smoking. There are also cigarette butts all over the beautiful walkways (so disrespectal). They need be cleaned up by the groundskeepers. We noticed all the 3ft light standards along the walkways have room at the top that could accommodate sand to be used as ashtrays. Easier for the staff to clean those, than to be picking up cigarette butts off the ground. The buffet. This was not our favourite, even “for Cuba”. We were also in Cuba in March 2023 at a different resort and the buffet always had good food. We only had breakfast there after the first day. We had fried eggs, toast and fruit so that was fine. More attention is needed and hot food needs to be kept temperature hot. I suggest getting into the a la carte restaurants as often as possible. Make the time to go to the lobby for your weekly reservations at 9am. Suggest lining up at 8:45am to beat the line. The Japanese was our favourite - food was hot and freshly made. There were supplychain issues, but I also think the management need to step up their game because we heard and read that other resorts in Cuba did not run out things. Toilet paper was big issue the week we went. The ladies rooms at the bbq restaurant near the beach and the swimming pool area/snack bar were the worst. They always ran out mid day. I also had to track down housekeeping twice to get more toilet paper in our room. Pool bar had no gin and ran out of vodka for several days. You could walk to the lobby bar to get vodka, but not sure why they couldn’t bring a few bottles down to the pool. Like I mentioned before, the management here need to step it up a notch because this could be an amazing resort by paying more attention to detail. We never saw them. They should be walking around and keeping their eye on details so it runs better. All in all, this was a very nice trip. Would we come back here? Yes. More positives than negatives.

Visited with husband excellent welcome and customer service from Leo. Highly recommend you book the a la carte restaurants. The Japanese was the best. The food really improved towards the end of our stay. Overall the food was ok, just use the condiments and be adventurous. Enjoyed the Cuban ribs at Port Royal, only challenge often we shared the food with birds... we had lunch there most days. Staff are really good Lil in guest services was excellent, she is on the ball and excellent customer service. Chan in the gym knowledgeable and friendly. Staff in main restaurant most are attentive. Great beach bar staff and gardeners. Everyone makes you feel welcome. Cigar lounge they work as a team and make you feel welcome. Beach is beautiful. Entertainment they work hard, good shows. WiFi you have to log in again after a while but hey it's s vacation. Would I recommend yes.

Not at all as was advertised. 2 star at best. Look elsewhere. Hotel is tired. Lacks maintenance.

Having travelled to Cuba five times previously and staying at the Royalton Hicacos, we were very disappointed from the minute we walked in. A/C issues, leaking toilet, worn furniture. Bulbs were missing on pathways - and this was Royal Service !?? Three days had no water pressure that Staff attributed to persistent issues with water pumps. Very limited choice in buffet … with the exception of the Japanese Tappanyaki, the other a La Carte restaurants featured “the SAME” menu with changes in name only depending on the style of the restaurant. The beef especially was hard and tough to chew. On the first evening at the Top of the Hill, and I kid you not - most of those around us who ordered the “steak” never cut a second piece. The beef we had in Varadero one evening was near Keg quality - thick and juicy. By the end of the week we ‘d had enough - never seen so much rice in all our lives. I could go on at length but the other critical reviews pretty much sum up this place. The beach is beautiful. The Cuban people so friendly. The crux of the issue is “worn and tired.” This is so far from the Ultra Luxurious billing that Melia (and Sunwing) highlight in their advertising

Beach, weather , staff and coffee were fantastic as usual but you get that everywhere in Cuba! I have no idea how this resort is rated a 5 Star!!. If you are booked to come here I strongly advise to cancel and go to a different resort! Your choice for breakfast is an omelette (wait in line for 20 minutes but very good), cereal or dry crepe/pancake? Lunch and supper was the same everyday for 7 days. Your choice of 6 different pans of rice, pieces of pork/beef(wait in line again) cabbage, and bread/buns. Oh and cheese and lunch meat. That is it!!! We talked to many people from other resorts and they had plenty of food- chicken, lobster, potatoes, vegetables , pasta, fish etc. The drinks were hit and miss as you sometimes received a good one and the next was gross as it depended what products were available to make them ( hotel rationed products). They are using the excuse of limited supply chain but I think it is more of cutting costs. Not much for seating area in main bar and the entertainment area. The resort was not full and most of the time you couldn’t sit anywhere. Would never ever go back to this place!!!
