Customer Service is a miss with Autumn, the Department Manager.

Jane R on May 11, 2024

Having found my misplaced gift certificate which apparently was valid until June 3, 2024, I decided to call the hotel to make a reservation. The initial contact was amazing and really helpful in trying to help me out. The hotel had some misleading verbage on the certificate claiming it was valid until June 3 but cannot be used during peak season, starting May 1. Subject to availability. I was very flexible in booking dates and was told that there was nothing the hotel could do for me as my gift certificate for two nights had expired. I enquired how it could be "valid" until June 3 but was told that I was confused and it was no longer possible to redeem this certificate. I spoke to Autumn, the department manager, and was told she can not only not redeem the certificate, but she is not willing to extend it until after the peak season ending September 30. I explained the hotel has misleading language and it would be very kind if she could honour the certificate for even one night or just extend it for a short time so we could come to a win-win solution. She said she could give me a discount of 30% off a room, but would not honour the certificate, despite it being valid to June 3. I asked her why the hotel would write this validity date if it was within their peak period. She replied they will look into their verbiage but she is not willing to make any concessions due to the hotel error on the gift certificate. No matter what I said, she continued that it was not the hotels fault and she would make no concessions or allow me to speak with a General Manager at the property. She clearly stated she was the department head and there would be no further discussion. I'm truly disappointed that we could not come to a mutual solution or that there was no customer service whatsoever. It seems odd that a hotel would donate a gift certificate to a Gala and if someone who made a donation to the Gala and purchased a silent auction item and tries to book a room can receive no accommodation due to a hotel error on the gift certificate. This was all done with the intention of fundraising and supporting a good cause (the BC Women's Health Foundation). Apparently the hotel is run by women and support women...all but this woman who is trying to redeem her gift certificate. Really unfortunate for this poor interaction by Autumn and lack of compassion and consideration to create a positive impression. I routinely travel and stay at great hotels and was hoping this might have been a local standout experience for me to recommend to others. Bottom line...as long as things don't go wrong, the hotel may be lovely. Once there is a disagreement, management is not willing to make any concessions even if they are at fault. Autumn would not take any accountability or ownership of the error despite it being in writing, and myself, as the consumer, am out of luck. BEWARE

Great service, very friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were large and bed was very comfortable. And was very handy to the major attractions in Victoria. Would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a comfortable hotel and good value for money
