Sandals Grande Saint Lucian

Everything was as we would expect from Sandals. The service, food, beach, pool, watersports, amenities, room, etc. This was our fifth Sandals vacation. One notable exception stood out however, and rendered it less likely that we may travel to Sandals again. One big sell about Sandals is that one can tour another Sandals on the same Island. We always avail ourselves of this and looked forward to touring Sandals Halycon. On March 5th, Tuesday we planned on taking the 12 Noon bus. It arrived at 12:02 and the Bus Scheduler said 5 minutes. Then later he said ten minutes. Then he disappeared. At 12:30 we asked the front desk what was with the bus. The young lady called someone who informed her that the bus had come and gone. I said that the bus was still there out in front and that it had been there for a half an hour. Then the driver came. My wife and I and two other passengers were on that (full sized) bus. The driver, without a word, tore off right as I was boarding and before I reached a seat. I fell down. I am elderly and felt threatened. The driver then sped all the way to Sandals Halycon. Later, returning from Sandals Halycon the bus was 30 minutes late. 3:15 to 3:45. No explanation from anyone at the front desk, the driver, the bus scheduler, etc..
Nice hotel, shame about the sunbeds

This was our first Sandals visit and having read the reviews I thought I would share our observations. First, the sunbed situation which gets a mention in quite a few reviews. It is quite ridiculous unfortunately - by 7:30 you have no chance by the pool (we heard people getting up at 6 to go and save their spot). You’ll have more luck on the beach but even then after 9 you’ll probably only get a bed without an umbrella. I’ve seen this mentioned in 5 star reviews as if it’s acceptable - maybe it is to some people but we go on holiday to not get up at 6! Many of the beds then just sit there with no guests for hours. The worst thing is there is loads of space for more beds and umbrellas around the pools and the beach. Unfortunately this alone will keep us from coming again. Food is decent, lunch offerings are mostly fast food dinner options on the whole pretty good - Gordon’s was good as was the Japanese restaurant. The breakfast was good - decent buffet and an omelette station. Drinks are okay, mainly geared towards the sweet end of the cocktail scale and the wine is fine if a little limited in choice. Overall 7 out of 10. All the staff were helpful and we never had any problems getting whatever service we needed. Some of the staff can be direct but it never impacts the quality of the help. We had a basic room overlooking the lagoon pool as we only sleep in it but it was clean and tidy, good linen and decent shower. The building as a whole is a little dated in places but overall very pleasant and the whole site and location is beautiful, as is St Lucia and we loved the catamaran trip which was fantastic. Lastly, the gym is not state of the art - perfectly useable and not atypical of a hotel but don’t expect what you see at the gym you pay for. Overall, we enjoyed the visit but the sunbed situation and the fact that it could be so easily be addressed will stop us returning and does leave a sense of complacency which you do sense in other areas which even though they are good, could be better without a big changes.
My awesome vacation

My wife and I had an amazing time at your St Lucian Grande resort. The place itself was really nice ,although you were doing roof work. What made our vacation extra special was the staff. Our room was 4116 and our cleaner was amazing. Your entertainment staff go way above and beyond to make sure we are enjoying our stay. They even invited us to lunch with them which was a wonderful surprise. We were made to feel like family even as we were leaving. I would just like to thank Vanessa, Deasia, Fenella, Abigail , Cessial and Neville for all your kindness ,energy, and hard work. I highly recommend Sandals Grande St Lucian! The people there are truly amazing! Thankyou.
Sandals Grande for the win

The Grande has now slid its way into our top two resorts. Not only is it a great resort to be out on the water, but also we encountered so many friendly and helpful staff it just sealed the deal. To start we liked that this is one of the Sandals properties with the most water sports. That includes the usual kayaks, paddle boards and sailing, and also had windsurfing, water ski, kneeboarding and wake boarding. The roped in area for swimming was also nice with sea urchins and sea weeds too deep to have to worry about. As for staff, so many to name. Xaiver from the photo team took some great shots and was a delight. Avernelle served us at a couple of the restaurants, always with a smile. Jean Claude had the water sports area handled and Kevon (in training) was super friendly and took our kidding in stride. We had a couple of spa treatments where Kacy and Shrivonne took extra time to explain some of the great products, which we clearly had to take home with us. Hopefully all those names are spelled correctly. Again, there were so many. Some started a little aloof, but add in a self deprecating joke and they lightened up quickly. Add in a helicopter ride to the resort, a great country signer one of the nights, a zip line excursion, and a ferry ride back to the airport and it was one of the best trips we have taken. Nice work Sandals, you did it again and had us booking the next trip before we left, thanks to Kareem.
A week in paradise

Very friendly staff - great amenities - lots of water activities. Good entertainment in the evenings. Wide variety of food. Staff seems eager to be sure guests are satisfied. Beautiful beach. Highly recommend the Luxury Sunset Cruise and the Powerboat & Power Snorkle excursions.
