This was our 5th trip to Los Cocos over the years. We had not been back for 3 years due to covid. The resort unfortunately has gone down hill and we wont return. Here is a bit of the good and bad.
The good. The staff are absolutely fantastic so helpful and always happy. The rooms were clean and bed sheets changed out. I like the size of the resort with the park and very easy to go pick up stuff at the store and central to everything. Again I like the resort but to many changes not for the good.
*We were up on the hill again in building 4. We always had our breakfast there in the restaurant, was a nice quiet start to have a coffee and relax. This year its closed. Not a huge deal to go down to the big buffet but was disappointed.
*The pool was sooooo cold you could not go in it. Not even a toe.
*Ran out of towels up at the pool lots of times
*The bar would close up top at 3:30-4PM. If you wanted something you had to go all the way to the beach bar, for ice or anything. Real handy.
*The taps in the room were falling off the counter at the sink
*Little or no water pressure in the room, hot water maybe depends on the day
*Balcony railing falling apart all rusty and not to safe
*Bathrooms around resort closed off and on due to plumbing issues
*Closed down the big buffet are half way threw our stay so cram everyone into the snack area. So congested and lined right up
*The food. It was slop. Horrible and cold. I eat anything but cant live on that stuff so we ate out lots. Kind of why you stay all inclusive to save a bit of cash for food. There was no fruit variety same everyday and night. I grabbed a orange one night for a treat and it was plastic?? Really fruit is worth nothing there. I went and bought some for my room.
*No more themed dinners. Loved Mexican night
Anyway had a good holiday and made the best of the hotel. Went fishing was incredible and the beach is wonderful. Its really to bad how the resort has gone down hill to the point in my mind of no return. We will rent a VRBO or something lots available in the area. I'm not going to quit going to the area but Los Cocos is done for us. A real shame used to love it there.
Fun but could have been better

The bad. The pictures are deceiving. The beach was very small. The staff were as friendly as possible but only a very few spoke english. It was difficult to speak to front desk etc for information. There was no Air transat representative available at all the whole week. She got us on the correct bus and never heard from her again. When we called I got a voicemail and call was not returned. It appears from other Canadians that it has changed severely since Covid. They were also unhappy and were return customers. We were told to bring US funds which they did not want. Canadian or Pesos only.
The good. We met Salvidore who is on the beach who spoke great english. He took us whale watching and snorkelng and into town for a walking tour. The bars had both local and international drinks, some staff made them different than others but all were good. The food was great, Fionna made our day and breakfast every morning with a smile and a song. An excellent party for New Years Eve including fireworks and chinese lanterns let off on the beach. It was a very safe and friendly atmosphere despite the language barrier. Our room was cleaned daily with fresh towels every day. Overall we had a great time however, I probably would not return.
Beautiful Rincon De Guayabitos
Jan 06, 2023
My husband and I recently went on an Air Canada vacation package to the Royal Decameron La Cocos in the beautiful Rincon De Guayabitos, north of Puerto Vallarta. We were able to stay at one resort and play at all 3 local Decameron properties. All 3 were priced the same but we chose the larger of the 3 the La Cocos and although we loved the location on this beautiful bay found we spent more time at the Decameron La Marina a few doors down on the beach. La Cocos is the older of the properties and was extremely busy with families from Guadalajara vacationing at the same time which was great for a more true Mexican feel but found that the beach chairs and buffet was at many times over crowded and so utilized the sister property often as it seemed a bit quieter and easier to access some meals, snacks and drinks than at La Cocos. There was limited to no entertainment at our hotel either but found the Kokomo bar at La Marina had some entertainment as well as the most personal and professional bartender named Osciel that made wonderful drinks and made us feel so welcome!
The food at the resort was not really to the standard we thought it would be, especially the snacks of which hot dogs were most present even as pizza toppings (pizza was really not good) but the Mexican dishes were very tasty. There was some mix ups with the al a carte restaurants for us and several other travellers who booked but then were turned away when they couldn't find our reservations so only visited the steak house one night which was good but the balance was at the buffet. The La Marina is a newer hotel, with nicer looking rooms and the food was good and the Kokomo bar with Osciel was great!
3 Star Resort with a 5 Star Personality

This review was written after a 7 day stay over the Holiday season. Noting that we did do our research on the resort, location and local activities.
- Very authentic Mexican experience
- Access to all three properties
- Immersion with the local culture (beach, town, food, etc.)
- The food in the restaurants (have to remember the resort rating and that it predominately caters to the Mexican population, hence the majority of the food was Mexican cuisine)
- Drinking from plastic cups (except for wine in the restaurants)
- The pools and the lounge chairs (much nicer at the other two properties)
- Hotel room amenities are very basic, but should meet your needs (don't let the sofa bed scare you)
- Kleenex (remember to bring some)
- A hair dryer (none provided)
- Small denominations of Mexican pesos (difficult to exchange large bills)
- Credit/debit is not used - however, AMTs/Cashpoints are readily available and safe
- The ride from the PV airport is about an hour and half. There is also a one hour time change between PV and Guayabitos (Mtn Time).
- Building 4 is quieter, has an adult pool with a bar, but there is no elevator and many stairs.
There is also no daytime restaurant in close proximity.
- Based on our experience there really was no difference in the style of rooms (all buildings included).
- A taxi from the resort to the main town is 50 pesos (which includes tip) | It is about a 25 minute walk
- If you are looking for a day trip to Puerta Vallarta, there is a bus that you can take. It is inexpensive and about the same amount of time
The resort personnel were very nice and accommodating. Yes, English is not their first language, but you are in Mexico and can certainly make do. Special shout out to Noel (restaurant server) and Alejandro (front desk) both went above and beyond. Also our WestJet rep Vincent was also great and very helpful.
All in all, we have no real negatives on this property - we knew what we were getting at time of booking and really enjoyed our experience.

I’ve been to all-inclusive hotels/resorts all across Mexico and I have to say this one straight out just SUCKED.
Food was edible but not good. Weiner hot dogs as peperoni on the pizza. Only ate what I was able to recognize. Hard boiled eggs, omelets made to order and quesadillas.
Rooms were as if you stepped into a time capsule and returned to the 70’s. NO blow-dryers provided, No iron. Plastic hangers in the closet, the safe was rusted and needed a key to use? Who else had a copy of the key? For obvious reason we skip on using the safe. White powder was falling from the ceiling, felt like chicken little – the sky is falling! Towels have the hotel name written on them with a black marker. A/C was the only thing that work in our room properly. The real kicker was the drink situation. Drinks were all gross and overly sweet. Only beer option was Light beer or Dark beer. FYI I ask for a gimlet, yeah didn’t happen no gin. All drink were served in flimsy 12-14 oz plastic cups. Soda was poured out of a litter bottle, oh and not very many options, Pesi or Squirt. There is an Oxo walking distance, that’s where I was able to buy water, cokes and snacks. No pool service, if you want sip a few cocktails by the pool I advise you sit by the Bar, oh wait which of 3 you ask? One in the main area, one on a lower level by the adult pool and a small one by another eatery that is reservations only. Good luck getting in, they don’t open that spot on Sundays or during the day, oh and its dinner only. Pools were mediocre, most didn’t have hand rails to enter the pool, just jump right on in. This review is based on my experience and I wish someone was as honest as I’m being about their stay in Los Cocos. Wouldn’t go back even if it was for free!
