Huge Disappointment!

V3443BEjanicem (Gravenhurst, Ontario) on Apr 11, 2024

We don’t often write reviews about places we have visited but we’re making an exception with the Verandah resort in Antigua. It was terrible. We were booked for two weeks. Decided after the first night we had to either go home on the next flight out or move to another property. We moved at our own expense after one week. We would have left immediately but the resort we chose had no availability until the next week. Let us explain. First, the positive. The property is expansive and beautifully landscaped. The pools were lovely and the beaches clean. Views from the rooms were very nice. Towards the end of our stay we discovered the little coffeehouse where we could get granola with yoghurt for breakfast and some snacks to tide us through the day. That’s about it. Reception and rooms When we arrived the hotel was not ready for us. Check-in was slow. Our room wasn’t ready. Although there were at least three people standing around we were told to store our own bags in a room off the lobby without a lock on it. We were not given a resort map but told to go to the beach bar and wait. This is a huge property with many hillsides and therefore difficult to navigate. The room we were given was awful. Right beside the main party pool where music was playing loudly and people were partying. The room itself was plain, a little dirty and definitely tired. Stains on the furniture. Bed was comfortable enough but the party and music went late into the night. We asked to be moved to another room. To their credit we were moved the next evening. The new room was quieter and a little nicer however there were broken drawer pulls and the balcony floor, chairs and table were disgusting. Had not been cleaned in a very long time. My feet were black from the dirt! A few key points: two small bottles of water in the room. Had to purchase bottled water after that. No stocked mini fridge and yet this was an all inclusive resort. Housekeeping came twice in the week. Surface cleaning only. Bathroom wasn’t cleaned. Food and Beverage In a word: atrocious. Two out of three of the main restaurants were inside. The main one served breakfast and dinner buffets where it was difficult to find anything appetizing to eat. What we did eat was awful. Coffee was burnt, tried to have tea and the water was lukewarm, floors were dirty. Service was mediocre. The only outdoor restaurant was passable, food wise, and at least being outside there was a breeze. The beach bar and grill at the quiet beach was okay. Bars were understaffed. Those who worked there were not very friendly. Booze seemed to be watered down and the wines were cheap swill - unless you wanted to pay extravagant US dollars for a bottle. Other notes Tipping: was expected by everyone working at the resort but was unmerited. Beaches: didn’t chance swimming at either beach. Quiet beach smelled horrible and the water was filled with seaweed and gunk. The party beach might have been okay except that we saw a cleaner dumping dirty water down a pipe in the grass outside the main pool’s washrooms after cleaning them. The grass gave off a sewage smell and the pipe seemed to go downhill towards the sea. We suspected it emptied directly into the bay but do not know. Gift shop: not only were the hours irregular (and that’s where bottled water had to be purchased) but the prices were crazy. Purchased a small package of cold medication and was charged $25 US! Checking out: we let reception know we were leaving two days before so they were aware. They weren’t. When we went to checkout they couldn’t get the bill right. Tried to charge us for fourteen days resort fees when we were there for seven. Then they tried to charge us an additional $3,500 US - why, we don’t know. When they finally figured it out with our assistance there was also a charge for a local charity donation. In the end we paid only what we owed but the experience was quite upsetting. At the end of the day we would suggest this property would be appropriate for 20 somethings who like to party and don’t care where. We would give it a rating of 2.

Quiet, Beautiful Property, Simple rooms, Decent Food

Kim-Brian37 (Montclair, New Jersey) on Apr 06, 2024

My husband and I stayed 5 nights at the Verandah. We are a super active couple in our 30's so we most enjoyed all the recreational activities in the water and around the resort. Overall, we thought it was a lovely stay! The property itself is well kept and maintained. It is pretty spread out and hilly but walkable for those that want the exercise. The porter service was great for the times you dont want to walk but it takes a few minutes of patience for them to arrive (thank you Tristan). The fruit infused water stations around the property were such a nice touch. Bathrooms were always cleaned and stocked. The recreational activities and game areas were really nice. Our favorite was learning to play pickleball! The instructor was awesome! We stayed in the "Clownfish" Waterview suite. Our room was spacious and clean but super simplistic, nothing extra or noteworthy. There was an issue with opening the back door but maintenance was able to fix it after a day. The patio had a simple bistro set and nothing more. Bed was comfortable. The shower pressure was fine and water temperature got nice and hot. There was a nice variety of foods offered at the buffet and restaurants. Of course, some items are hit or miss but my husband and I were always able to find at least something we enjoyed. The breakfast omelet station was great (thank you Marina). The pizza place was actually pretty good! Service at restaurants was good for the most part. It seemed some nights were a lot slower maybe due to being short staffed. Anneshia was our fantastic server several times at Sails and Tails and had like 16 tables or more by herself. She ran those tables nonstop with a smile on her face! Michael, Theodore, and Kayla also were pleasant servers and gave great service! The Cafe was nice to enjoy in the mornings and throughout the day. Gleniq was pleasant and added a little extra love to all her drinks she made for us. The pub was also a nice place to hang out in the evenings. The Pineapple Beach Club was nice to visit for a change of scenery. You have to request a day pass from Guest Services prior to going. Its a completely different vibe. My husband and I enjoyed the BBQ cookout for lunch and the activities! The activities were way more fun and entertaining than at Verandah. Reccommendations to visitors: Schedule everything in advanced at Guest Services including dinner reservations and day passes. Bring cash and smaller denominations for tips because there's not really anywhere to break bills down. Cash is needed for taxis. Wouldn't really recommend for anyone handicapped or disabled due to the wide spread and hilly nature of the property unless you're super patient and heavily rely on porter cart service. Items that would make for a nicer stay: Having menus in the rooms would be really convenient. An ATM or way to break down smaller bills would have been nice and allowed for more staff tipping. Daily scheduled activities were a bit disappointing because we would plan our day around activities that either wouldn't happen (beer pong) or too full to participate (bingo only had like 12 cards). Maybe a sign up sheet for activities could help?
