This was our first time in Barbados after 9 other Caribbean holidays in Antigua and St Lucia. A large number of the hotels on the west coast of Barbados, including Crystal Cove, are wedged into a small strip of land between a very busy road (jammed twice a day at rush hour) and the beach, and this coast is pretty solidly developed, in contrast to the resorts we have been to elsewhere which have typically been large and spacious and set in more isolated rural locations on the coast. It was apparent that many of the guests love the busyness of this west coast (liking being able to go out to restaurants and bars locally), but if you seek a more peaceful resort-based all-inclusive break then I suggest going elsewhere (we won't be returning to Barbados for this reason). Caribbean hotels are known for their "shabby chic" feel, a contrast that becomes more apparent with the further growth of modern well-invested resorts throughout the world. However, Crystal Cove is now suffering from significant under investment and just generally feels more 3-star (our bathroom wouldn't make a 2-star). It appears there is a major refurb planned for 2023. If you do plan to go here then consider waiting till this has been done. The food was typical for the islands, so good enough if not inspiring, and the staff generally up to the super-friendly approach typical of the Caribbean. However, some staff weren't helpful and tainted our takeaway of interactions at the restaurant and reception. Restaurant booking was poorly organised. Every breakfast and evening slot required a booking - okay - but then everyone (booked or not) just turns up and has to queue. Breakfast queue was slowed by also dealing with dinner reservation and priority also given to anyone who happened to call on the phone whilst we stood there! It's a mess and the semi-stress of it all isn't what you come on holiday for. Overall, we had a nice holiday with family. The sun, sand and sea are wonderful and are the same for everyone wherever they stay. The all-inclusive nature meant that food and drinks were more than sufficient. If you are booked to go then you'll have a nice stay, but for the money there is better value elsewhere. If you like resorts with more space, and seek a more "away from it all" Caribbean then consider other islands.
Needs updating, poor front desk customer service

Staff in the bars and restaurants and the porters were all lovely. The kids club was fantastic. Unfortunately aside from that we were very disappointed. The reception staff in particular were extremely poor. Every request we made was denied or ignored. We booked a different room to the one we got, and we asked to move. They told us we were wrong but said they would ask the manager, but we didn’t hear anything else about it. We asked for a drying rack for the balcony which they tell you to do if you need to dry things as they don’t want you to hang things from the balcony rails. They wrote it in their book but 10 days later it never arrived. There were countless other minor things they didn’t or couldn’t help with that all together added up to really poor service. The hotel itself is very tired - rooms and restaurant really retro. Food is pretty hit and miss. The beach bar is a nice setting and the beach itself is very nice.
