Premium prices....average offerings
485jomo (United Kingdom) on May 07, 2025
Disappointment doesn't describe our experience fully. We were excited to be coming to Sandals and expected a luxury holiday... we were so let down. We were offered restricted meal time booking slots within the restaurants as Butler service get first dibs. Once there the food is spectularly average and service can be rushed. The restaurants you can reserve aren't really worth the effort tbh. I expected so much more for the price we paid for the holiday...infact it turned out to be comparable to any average all inclusive resort but with nicer gardens, pools and decor. But that's not what we paid for...we thought we were going to get 5 star gourmet service but infact got average offerings. The bars ran out of drinks advertised, the spirits unless you requested particular brands were local spirits, though plentiful and there were great bar staff. Service overall is patchy, some folk were great others not so. Room service was included in the price but again not reliable. Buildings need refurbishment, paint is peeling, lifts don't work, showers don't work around some pool areas, & some pools are out of action, plus there's an awful smell of drains. Gardens are fantastic and very well kept. The beaches are fab..its Barbados! We've been to the island alot over the years...and tbh, staying here has been a real let down. I would not recommend Sandals Barbados to anyone, stay in other resorts, eat at better restaurants, the food is fresh, local and great quality, the island offers so much more out of resort. We work very hard and saved for this holiday as a treat but sorry Sandals really isn't value for the money in our opinion.
A huge disappointment

I have always aspired to go to a Sandals resort and we finally managed a week in March this year. It was a rather last minute holiday booked through Virgin Holidays. Because our experience was different from other TA reviewers, I have read through a lot of previous reviews after we arrived back and have come to the conclusion that the experience you have will mainly be decided by the type of room you book - whether it is a basic entry level Walk In room (as we had) or a butler/swim up room. A lot of the reviews on TA are for the latter type of room. The Grande Luxe Walkout room which we had was ok, if small, but for a five star resort, a shower over a bath with a plastic shower curtain was the absolute pits. Not only that but the bath had a big crack in it so if I had taken a bath, I doubt if the water would have stayed in! The bath in any case had a rather nasty dark ring around it so I wouldn’t have wanted a bath in any case. The chest of drawers where I put folded clothes was also weirdly sticky to touch and our clothes had to be peeled away, it was most odd. It was as if the wood stain hadn’t quite set. The grounds are indeed lovely but as Sandals is open all year, it means that maintenance is ongoing. The gardeners are out every day as well but why did the leaf blowers have to start work (right outside our room) at 6.30 in the morning (to be followed by an infernally loud machine cleaning the paths?). There is noise wherever you go, even piped muzac in the gardens and the pools. It was infuriating and didn’t make for a very restful holiday. My biggest gripe was the lack of information about the resort itself. We were given a printed sheet with what restaurants there are and another with a map of both the resorts (which even the reception staff admitted bore no resemblance to an actual map). No other information. It looks like two resorts - Sandals Royal and Sandals Barbados - on the map but in actual fact it is one big resort. We were half way through the week before I found where the yoga area was and half way through the week before we found the “quiet pool”. We never did find out where the snorkelling was. When we turned up to reception for an orientation tour, it was “oh it’s not here you have to go to the other resort”. When we asked about booking restaurants at reception, it was “it’s not here you have to go to a desk at the other resort”. When we go there, after waiting around for 20 minutes, someone turns up, phaffs with her computer for 15 minutes then says, sorry I can’t book anything because I have no internet. Can we go to the restaurant ourselves to book? No. Can we phone the restaurant, No. Can we phone you or leave our details for when you get internet, no. We managed to get only one reserved restaurant in our week because when I went back to the desk a couple of days later, it was the same scenario, no internet. The set up was very archaic. Maybe people who book the butler service have it done for them. I’m afraid we in the cheap rooms (because that’s what it felt like), were clueless. Same with yoga. I turned up early one morning for a class and one kind member of staff who was passing by told me there was no yoga that day - how was I supposed to know? Also, I never found a drinks menu anywhere so never had any idea what I could order. Sandals do boast about the amount of restaurants on offer but bear in mind, they are not all restaurants (they count the coffee shop as one). The restaurants also are not all open every day or for every service. I did struggle for healthy options. Another gripe was the reserving of sun loungers. The butlers come out and reserve the loungers at 6 am. You may find a lounger at a pool or on the beach after 10.00 but it will either be next to a bar or in full sun. Weddings are very popular there, which inevitably bring a crowd who want to party. (Fair enough). We were told that the week before we arrived it was very quiet but the week we were there was the opposite. The infinity pool was the party pool and the pool by the beach where people played ball. We found most staff helpful but a minority were indifferent and occasionally rude. We were very irritated to be woken up at 7.30 on the morning we were due to leave to be asked to fill out a form with our flight details on, especially as it was the third phone call we had had and our form had been handed in the previous day. Sandals is trading on an outdated reputation. It’s dated, the fitness options are poor, they need comfortable sun loungers. with cushions (the beach loungers were so uncomfortable), quiet areas for people that don’t want to party. Some areas are grubby and for goodness sake, create an app where you can book restaurants and classes, especially as there is no room service. (Although they may have this for people paying more money, who knows?). Did anyone ask if we enjoyed our holiday or ask for feedback - nope. I get the impression nobody cared. Would we return? No. Not only because of the reasons above, but the resort/s is too noisy and disorganised for us. We are big fans of the Ikos brand and in our opinion, we would far rather spend our money in Europe with a brand that understands how to deliver a top class service - we sure as hell didn’t get it here. Our Sandals holiday was a huge disappointment.
