Anniversary #21 was great at Sandals Barbados ~

Most of the people were very pleasant, kind and helpful. They upgraded our room to a suite which was AWESOME, although the mattress is harder than I like but I understand they probably last longer. The pillows were smelly, but I always bring a blanket to cover my face from actually touching them - even if the cases were changed. I do that with ALL hotels. We had plenty of towels - some folks complained in other reviews but this was not our experience. The food was good, Schooners service was EXTREMELY slow. Dinos, Spices, Cafe Paris, Portofino and the pool seafood restaurant were good. Drinks at the piano bar were great! The drinks were good although, the swim-up bar ran out of Titos but there were other bars near who had it. The pina' coladas were DELICIOUS! and bar service was very pleasant. The resort is large so be prepared to do A LOT of walking. This was our first Sandals experience and folks report this one as being "less than" the others but I was happy AND I have travelled extensively. Can't wait to try another location to make a comparison.
A sad decline

My wife and I went in April of 2022 and spent the next two years telling anyone who asked that Barbados was our favorite Sandals. I would have rated that trip FIVE STARS for sure. We have been to four in total and for our fifth trip we decided to go back to Barbados. It has a fantastic selection of foods, the pools and beach are amazing, and the staff genuinely seemed to enjoy the work they did. Having the only bowling alley at Sandals, it always a draw for the night life. We went in late August 2024 and saw an all around decline in the resort overall. We did not know until our arrival, but the resort had laid off over 200 workers just a few weeks prior. We arrived on schedule and were told to wait about an hour for our room. We had food and took in the sights for the hour and went back to check in. Along with the others from the bus we were told the rooms were still not ready and had no ETA. I only mention this because normally the rooms are ready on arrival. It took about two hours of being there before being let into out room. They did offer the pre flight room to change if we wanted. Once in the room we noticed the ceiling fan wasn't running. After leaving the room and coming back we noticed a burning like smell and the base of the fan was hot to the touch. We shut the fan button off and notified the front desk. The fan was untouched for the week we were there without repair. Not that it mattered too much, the AC in the room did cool the room down well but leaked water consistently. One couple said theirs dripped onto a laptop. We bring a roku to watch TV off that but without it, I could not get the TV to play any shows or movies. Several other couples mentioned their TVs not working in the rooms. Again all this is unfortunate because two years ago this place was the best. Our building, "Sandals Barbados" has an elevator that would act up, leaving the door open for long periods of time, closing the door only to go nowhere. The other building "Sandals Royal Barbados" had one elevator totally out of commission for our time there. One frustrated employee who was forced to take the stairs all day mentioned "This place has got to do better" and you could feel his discouragement. It was close to 100 degrees that day so I can imagine that only makes things worse. Most of the working elevators have busted up floor tiles that are routinely patched up rather than fixed for good. This is also apparent around the pools. More you look you see missing and broken stone work. The stone stairs near the mail pool area bar are coated in a thick slime that my wife slid off and injured her foot along with falling in front of everyone. The bowling alley only had one functional lane that no longer kept score. When you ask any of the workers they all just say they don't know why it no longer works. There was also thick films on the game tables near the bar and when we asked for something to clean it with we were told "thats housekeeping's job" and received no further assistance. Overall, there did not seem like much concern for infection control, and although not directly the resorts fault, my wife also ended up testing positive for COVID when we got home which felt like another indicator of poor cleanliness throughout the resorts, as many frequently used areas often went untouched or were visibly dirty. The Merry Monkey the english pub had some issues among the staff that was apparent from one night to another, I was told I could not enter with a tank top on (wasn't aware) while another guy with a tank top was told he had to sit in the corner if he wanted to come in. I'm not sure which was worse. We were also seated for food at the bar and felt as if we were ignored for at least an hour even with the bartender trying to obtain the wait staff's attention. We attempted to go to the Merry Monkey three times and felt as if we were an inconvenience each time, which is disappointing as it used to be our late night happy spot. Beyond this experience being a significant damper on our long awaited vacation, my biggest concern is the lack of concern or attention to overall quality and safety. I genuinely hope these concerns are taken to heart by Sandals Barbados so that the resort can be brought back to its full potential. We hope to continue our journey with Sandals but for now we remain disappointed and undecided.
