Mixed Bag in Paradise

This is the kind of place one wants to love... the location is beautiful and the ocean views are breathtaking. The pools (on each side of the street) are very nice, and the entire place gives you the feeling of "I'm on a wonderful tropical vacation." Unfortunately, the staff often seems either confused and perplexed by their own responsibilities, and/or hostile towards their guests' presence in their country. We first encountered a problem upon arrival at the Waves resort-- the hotel staff inexplicably booked us an extra room, and over two weeks out (as of this writing) we still have not been refunded the extra charge. Why is this unforced error so difficult for the hotel to fix? Our room was lovely, but our bathroom toilet did not work upon arrival... wouldn't this kind of thing be checked before the room was declared "ready" for guests? And while it was "fixed," it never flushed correctly. (Worth noting: two other public facilities on site also had this "hold down the flush and pray it works" experience). The food, if not spectacular, is good, but when arriving for breakfast at Waves' buffet-style restaurant, we were abruptly asked, "Same time tomorrow morning!?" Why are guests required to know this? Don't people on vacation tend to have a free-wheeling schedule? The expectation of a regimented breakfast time, especially when this is just a buffet, is baffling. In addition, the staff at the restaurant always seemed overly-burdened, as if we the guests were a surprise and nuisance-- When we arrived at our first dinner experience, we were asked by three separate employees, "how many?" We'd answer, and they would retreat into the dinning area.... Why is there no established coordination? Covid-19 masking polices are largely inconsistent. In an open-air terrace, the staff will alternatively expect strict mask use, and no mask use based upon a seemingly arbitrary, amorphous proximity to the open-air food offerings. It is important to note that no additional masks are made available on property. If you only brought one with you...treat it with the utmost care and be sure not to lose it in the sand and surf. The hotel will only recommend "a grocery store down the street" by way of replacement. The hotel water taxi is cool--and visiting the swim-up cave bar at Crystal Cove is great-- but you should know that the taxi service shuts down at 4:30pm, so don't make any dinner plans anywhere other than where you're staying, unless you want to make your own ground-transportation plans. The aforementioned pools? The larger of the two is lovely and secluded on the adults-only section of the property, but many pool tiles are missing. The pool water level was lower than the skimmer-filter for three days out of the five of our stay. More examples of lack of care.... This strange behavior is illustrative of what it is like to stay at Waves.... Typical resort activity answered by a management and staff that behaves like everything they do takes....so....much....effort; grumpy, unpleasant, borderline just-under-the-surface-hostile *effort.* It's a shame, because the property is beautiful. If we ever try another all-inclusive resort in this part of the world, it's back to Sandals for us.

This hotel by far exceeded expectations for us - we had read great reviews about the place prior to going and I can honestly say all the staff absolutely made this stay for us. The service was brilliant, everyone was so approachable and attentive, it really made you feel well looked after. All the staff are so friendly and cheerful and genuinely seemed happy to be there. It was so nice to see so many smiley faces! The hotel was always very clean and kept well presented. The setting / views from the bar and decking are absolutely incredible and perfect for those gorgeous sunsets. Equally the pool side of the hotel is tranquil and has a very calming relaxed atmosphere. The rooms are really well air conditioned and the bed was large and very comfortable. The two restaurants both served amazing food, with always plenty of choice. We absolutely loved our time at Waves and would definitely return in the future and we have recommended the hotel to all our friends and family and anyone who will listen! Thank you to everyone at Waves for such an incredible stay and for helping make our honeymoon so special! We also did a cool runnings catamaran cruise (which the hotel can book for you!) during our stay and this was the highlight of our trip - a must do if you get chance and well worth the money!!!
