Choose Rimrock instead

We have been to 6 other Fairmonts before getting to this one in Banff. We usually book the Fairmont Gold rooms but could not get one at Banff. I was really reluctant to stay in their regular rooms because we had a terrible experience at Lake Louise when we also couldn’t get a Gold room. However, Rimrock was fully booked and we couldn’t extend our stay there. We were staying in the Grand View Suite in Rimrock for 6 days. Anyway we reluctantly checked out of our beautiful suite at Rimrock and checked into Fairmont. We booked a Gate House 2 queen suite and sure enough, we were disappointed. The suite was really old and outdated. And REALLY SMALL. Especially given that we just came from Rimrock suite which was super huge (2 bathrooms, a very large hall and a very large room). It felt like we thrown into a cheap budget hotel at Fairmont. The furniture don’t match and they look like cheap furnitures that you pick up from curbside. There is an ugly brown couch in the hall that is just totally cheap. Also an ugly standing lamp and a cheap side table. You can hardly fit a suitcase in the closet. The bathroom is really small, although updated. But it’s impossible to get the water at the right temperature. It’s either hot or too cold - impossible to get it just warm. It’s also impossible to apply make up in the bathroom. The lighting is just bad. When you sit on the toilet bowl, there is a wall just a few inches in front of you. The room in the suite is really small, just enough for 2 beds and nothing else. There is also absolutely nothing to brag about the view. At Rimrock, we had a sweeping view of the mountains, because it is at the Sulphur mountain where the gondola is at. Here at the gatehouse suite, we get small windows with nothing much to look at. The valet are also much more attentive at Rimrock. My advice for every Fairmont is the same - don’t waste your money if it’s on a regular room or suite. Go for Fairmont Gold or you will experience a budget hotel at a steep price. If you are looking for luxury hotel in Banff, go to Rimrock and book the grand view suite.
Beautiful hotel a few miles from downtown Banff

I stayed at this location as part of a Rocky Mountaineer vacation package. The hotel looks like an old European castle, with rooms in many different wings. Our double room was huge, with a lovely view. The hotel itself has a number of restaurants and shops, along with activities for individuals and families. The service is quintessential Fairmont. The only issue is that we arrived too late in the day to experience all that this hotel had to offer. Its location close to Bow Falls and downtown Banff make it an ideal base for exploring the area. If I ever return to the area, I plan to return to the Fairmont Banff Springs.
