Deny responsibility for Slip and Fall Incident at Ka’ana Kitchen

Last B (Tacoma, Washington) on Dec 04, 2024

I am writing this review to express my disappointment regarding a slip-and-fall incident I experienced at Ka’ana Kitchen at Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort on November 24, 2024. Despite my attempts to address this matter with the restaurant's management, their handling of the situation has been deeply unsatisfactory, leaving me with no choice but to escalate my concerns to you. While bringing food to my table, I slipped on a wet floor caused by spilled pineapple. The fall was not only painful but also deeply embarrassing. I sustained significant bruising to my elbows, buttocks, and tailbone. Additionally, my cell phone, which was in my back pocket, was damaged, resulting in a cracked screen and cover. When I was initially seated, I noticed that the floor under the table and chairs was wet and slippery, likely due to spilled water or juice. I immediately brought this to the server’s attention. However, no action was taken to address the hazards. After my fall, the server assured me that a manager would come to speak with me to address the incident, but no one approached me. Although a medical staff member provided ice for my bruises, I was too embarrassed to discuss the full extent of my injuries, particularly to my tailbone, in a public setting. The staff member took my contact information and assured me someone would follow up with me. Nine days later, I had still received no communication. When I finally contacted the restaurant, they declined responsibility for the damage to my phone, citing a delay in reporting, despite their failure to follow up as promised. I find the restaurant’s position inconsistent and unacceptable for several reasons: 1. Failure to Follow Up: The restaurant’s management promised to contact me, yet failed to do so for nine days. This delay contradicts their assurance and places an unreasonable burden on me to initiate communication while recovering from injuries. 2. Focus on Recovery: Following the fall, my priority was my physical well-being, not inspecting my phone. I was in pain and shock and relied on the promised follow-up to address related concerns, including property damage. 3. Guest Care vs. Procedural Priorities: Declining responsibility for property damage based on procedural grounds, while neglecting the duty of care to follow up with a guest injured on their premises, undermines trust and guest satisfaction. I expect better from a Hyatt establishment. The combination of unsafe conditions, inadequate response at the time of the incident, and subsequent dismissal of my concerns is deeply disappointing.
