Amazing Trip to Costa Rica
P4427DMronaldc on Jul 03, 2022
This was my family's first trip to Costa Rica. We chose to stay at the Westin because it was recommended by a co-worker. It exceed our expectations. The services were excellent, the people were amazing, and the rooms were clean. We stayed in the Royal Beach Club which was adults only. We had access to an adult only pool which was very peaceful. Javier went out of his way to make sure that we had reservations each night, and that we had everything that we needed. The grounds were beautiful. Each day we would see different wildlife from monkeys, coatis, lizards, iguanas, and birds. They have a variety of restaurants to eat at each night. The Italian restaurant was our favorite. We were disappointed we didn't get to try the Asian food, but they were booked while we were there. The property also has a variety of activities. They have yoga on the beach, bingo by the pool, and water aerobics just to name a few. They also offer bikes and kayaks for free. The beach is public with vendors and souvenirs. I found the local sellers who offer tours and messages very helpful. My daughter and I had a massage from Gaby who did an amazing job. In addition, we booked an excursion with Erik G. He is in a blue shirt. His shirt and hat say his name. He arranged a driver to come pick us up. We went horseback riding, zip-lining, water rafting, visited a waterfall, and hot springs. It was about a two hour drive. His driver picked us up, and provided us with a great deal of history during our drive with him. He was very knowledgeable and helpful. He even took pictures of our family throughout the day. It was an amazing experience. We will definitely come back to the Westin and experience the sense of Pura Vida.
First Trip to Costa Rica
Lori F (Huntersville, North Carolina) on Jul 03, 2022
We stayed at the Westin Reserva the last week of June for our first trip to Costa Rica. I selected the property based on many of the reviews I found here, so I wanted to make sure and pass it forward. Airport/Transfer: The airport was very nice and they moved us through immigration and customs quickly. It took 25 minutes to get through everything, grab our checked bags and walk out front to find our pre-arranged driver. We booked both our airport transfers through Erik Garcia, after reading about him in so many posts here on TripAdvisor and in the FB Group for Westin Reserva. He had a driver waiting for us with a sign with our name on it. I didn’t see him initially, but Erik had asked me for a selfie prior to our arrival and the driver recognized me and called out for me. It took a little over an hour to make the drive to the resort. Check-In: Very smooth. We stayed in the Royal Beach Club and they had a driver grab out bags at the main lobby and take us to the Club Lounge for check-in. We were a little early, but the room was ready. Room: It was a little smaller than it appeared on the website, but not a huge deal. We were in Building 1 and had a view of the jungle (and the monkey expressway through it — so fun sitting on the balcony and watching them). The room was really dark because of the tree canopy and the lighting wasn’t great. Again, not a huge deal, but noticeable. The Weather: We knew it was rainy season when we booked and it definitely lived up to its billing. We had two really nice days where it rained minimally. We also had a couple of days where the rain started around 1 PM and didn’t let up. We ended up leaving a couple days early because of Tropical Storm Bonnie. We weren’t sure how it would affect an already chaotic airline industry and didn’t want to roll the dice on not being able to get out on our original flight. Dining: I had read about “Aaron” and booking reservations with him the week prior to our trip. I attempted to do so, but it didn’t work for us. When we arrived, they gave us our dinner reservations and none of them matched what I had requested. We were able to change one time through John, the concierge in our building, but other than that we just went with the hand we were dealt. The food was the best we’ve ever had at an AI (we’ve stayed at 9 different resorts in Mexico and the D.R.). Favorite meal was at Faisanella. Least favorite was at La Sabana (the meat had a smoky taste to it that we didn’t enjoy). We didn’t get to Manglar, which was disappointing. The buffet was very good, especially for breakfast. Activities: The pools are huge. We split time between the main pool and the club pool. Never had a hard time finding chairs or shade. We brought an inflatable raft and they filled it with air for us at the Activities Center at the main pool. The Coati definitely roam the pool areas looking for food. We saw one try to take someone’s backpack, which I assume had food in it. Just be careful about having food accessible to them. Make sure you make a point to take in the sunsets at the beach. They are breathtaking. Excursion: We booked an off-property excursion with Erik Garcia, who can be found right at the entrance to the beach where all the vendors hang out. He arranged a day for us at Hacienda Guachipelin with a private guide/driver named Bryan. We did an amazing canopy tour through a canyon and over the rain forest, took a short hike to a waterfall and spent time in the hot springs at Rincon de la Vieja National Park. It took us about 1.5 hours each way to get there. Bryan was great. He hiked to the waterfall and hot springs with us and pointed out native flora. He also took a lot of pictures of us, which was unexpected and great (as a couple, we rarely get photos of both of us when we are on vacation). I definitely recommend Erik to book your excursion(s) and ask for Bryan as your guide. Overall: It was a great experience, despite being rainy season. The resort is beautiful and well maintained. It is really spread out, but we enjoy walking so that didn’t bother us. The shuttles are frequent (maybe a little too frequent) so if you aren’t a walker, you’ll be fine. The people are incredibly welcoming and accommodating. John and Bergen, two of our concierges, were tremendous.
