Great Staff! Grounds Need Improvement

We just returned from a 5 day stay at the Gran Faro. First, let me say that the staff are super nice and helpful. Luis at the front desk was very kind and understanding. We had to check out at the "regular" reception because the premium desk was closed. All of the pool staff were friendly and nice and we appreciated them all. Secondly, we were there for Hurricane Olaf. The staff worked so hard to keep us safe during this scary time. Wind and rain started early in the morning and the swim up bar was still open serving drinks. While the staff was boarding up the buildings the restaurant and bar staff were still trying to keep us happy on vacation. Can you imagine? You are worried about your own family and house yet you are pouring drinks at a swim up bar to the crazy tourists still in the pool? By the afternoon all windows and lobbies were boarded. The buffet restaurant was still serving food but the selection was limited. We were told that alcohol was not being served. The lights went out briefly as the wind and rain intensified. Yet the staff still served. By early evening things started getting bad. Category 2 hurricane. Lights were out, elevator not working, no amenities (DUH!). Yet the staff continued to make sure that everyone was ok. I later found out that most of the staff stayed overnight, some not knowing what the damage was to their own homes. THANK YOU EVERYONE!! I know that this is long but I want to say just one or two things more. Not related to the hurricane. This is a value/budget hotel and it shows. The whole place needs remodeling. The pools need to be re-tiled, the lounge chairs could be replaced. The rooms really need updating. The water came out yellow till we let it run for a few minutes. The grout and tile need to be re done. Our room's safe did not work, nor did our phone. The air conditioner barely worked and we were sweating at night. The screen door needs to be replaced. There was no wifi/cell service in our room. And no outlets near the bed. The grounds are very well kept and the whole place is very clean. The food is not good. I understand that during this time of covid and being the off season, not everything will be as abundant. But the food should be good. The coffee is horrible. The buffet is just not good. Covid restrictions are enforced. Overall, the hotel staff earns 5 stars for keeping us safe during the hurricane. We hope that all of the staff fared well and that their families are safe. The hotel gets 3 stars because of the state of our room and the quality of the food. We did have fun, and we enjoyed our stay. If you are going soon, don't worry, just be aware. We won't return until renovations are made.

Horrible experience. Please save your money! Terrible service from beginning to end. Nothing good to say. Food, Custer service, awful! We are currently at this place and I am documenting my experience as a travel agent and vlogger. At check in, we were supposed to be escorted to the premium level check-in lounge but the clerk gave us regular check in and a regular room. When he gave us our wristbands, I told him we booked a premium level room. They basically just took the pink bands off and replaced them with black premium ones. They did not give us the premium level room specific suites with ocean views, amenities (welcome champagne, welcome tray), upgraded in room amenities... I guess they assumed we didn't know any better because we didn't put up a fuss. I'd hate to assume our RACE had something to do with it. They do not enforce the in door Covid mask policy. Hurricane Olaf passed during the night last night, and the resort has used this as an opportunity (as of yesterday afternoon and with no prior notice given) to shut down all of its amenities, elevators, room service, pools, in room air conditioning, snack bars, and restaurants, except the for the buffet, and it's open only a couple of hours at a time, and with limited contenental style(no meat) options. We are on the 5th floor, and they shut the elevators down yesterday afternoon. Why? Today is beautiful and sunny, but everything is still closed. No pools, no restaurants, no air conditioning in the rooms, no housekeeping. Food is horrible. Also, our room flooded and power went out in our bathroom/ entry area (which meant the ceiling fan didn't work either) last night around 9 pm, when the rain and wind began. We called the front desk and asked that they send someone to mop and wet vac the carpets. It's the next day at 11:23 am and no one has been here yet. We've had to slough around in 3-5 inches of water to get around. Customer service is terrible as well. Sad thing is we're here another 5 days. AS A TRAVEL AGENT AND AS A VLOGGER, I WOULD NOT REFER THIS RESORT TO ANYONE!
