Day pass off of Cruise Ship

248danj (Port Coquitlam, Canada) on Dec 01, 2022

We decided to spend the day here during a Central America cruise. The facility was very nice, the pass was 1,100 pesos each for 9-5 pm. It included all of the “all inclusive “ amenities. There were lots of pools to choose from, the sand on the beach was coarse and the ground was rocky where you swim, you need water shoes. My disappointment was with the drinks, there wasn’t any alcohol in them, I had 5 drinks and felt absolutely nothing. I don’t drink much, so that many drinks should have made my head spin a bit. The lunch buffet was average, not sure if I would go back.

Very good stay at Barcelo

Carol D (Calgary, Canada) on Nov 29, 2022

Three of us flew from Calgary for a week with WestJet vacations. Transport to the hotel was via multiple small vans (Hectours) carrying 9 people plus driver. This was great since people off early didn’t have to wait for everyone to be done and it made checking in easier overall with staggered arrivals. Our van dropped off people at the Tesoro and Las Hadas first, then Barcelo. We had stayed here once before (2015) - and had booked a partial ocean view room (non-premium)- we were very happy to find out it was on the 7th floor and the views were great. Check in was smooth, and the bell man (Alfonso?) was excellent - telling us about the hotel as we went up to our room. Room set up was 2 double beds, with a pull out couch and chair in a seating are close to the balcony. There is lots of storage with 2 closets and a center bank of double drawers in the entranceway, facing the bathroom. The bathroom was huge, 2 vanities, shower, huge tub and toilet - though it is a bit inconvenient for a party of 3 to have everything in one large room instead of a separate area for the toilet etc. We managed by checking each time - “I am going to have a shower - does anyone need to use the bathroom before I do?” There was a shampoo and soap dispenser in the shower stall, but no conditioner and no lotion on the bathroom counter, so bring both if you need them. The hairdryer is in the entrance closet on the top shelf - it does have 2 speeds and 3 heat settings, plus a cool button - but I brought my own so can’t comment on it’s performance. The minibar was stocked with 2 Corona light, 2 diet Pepsi, 2 regular Pepsi and 2 bottles of water, a bag of plain chips and a bag of nuts. They also had additional water in the bathroom and by the coffeemaker (on counter near the entrance.) Housekeeping was great - there was only 1 day where we weren’t given facecloths. The balcony had a small table, two chairs and a slide out drying rack perfect for drying wet bathing suits. The one thing I didn’t like was the pillows on the beds. There were two pillows per bed, but both were the full width of the bed -(50-55 inches long) so you either shared the same pillow - or you had to fold it and try to bunch it up to have it stay on your side. Since the double beds are not that large to begin with, having pillows that long was awkward for 2 people in one bed. Since were were staying for 7 nights, we were allowed to book 3 a la cartes and we booked all three the next morning at the front desk - Mexican (Algave) for Monday night, Japanese (Kyoto) for Tues night and Italian (Capri) for Friday night. On arrival (Sunday night) there is a Mexican Fiesta buffet outdoors in the Budda Garden. Overall we really enjoyed the food at the resort - we could always find something we liked. All a la carte menus were digital - so make sure you have a smart phone. There was never an issue finding chairs in the pool area - and we saw staff up early scrubbing the chairs with soap/bleach and bristle brushes. The bathrooms around the resort were spotless, and always being cleaned regularly. The gym was very good - decent equipment and a good number of machines. You signed in and received a gym towel - and one day they had temperature checks (assumed due to covid). Due to the impact of covid on travelling, the resort has probably fallen behind on some maintenance - the rooms were a bit worn - the screens on our sliding balcony doors were torn, the handles are the bathroom doors well worn and the one sliding bathroom door kept popping off - but the resort and room are very clean. One of the best things about the Barcelo was the staff who were great everywhere except at the front desk. The service there was very spotty, occasionally great but just as often terrible, with only one staff member behind the desk regardless of how many people were waiting. (We noted several nationals skipping the line and going up to be served which was irritating when we had been waiting in a line.) The service was really good in the restaurants and around the pool - the staff hustled. Staff were always friendly, smiling and joking. We tipped, and the staff were extremely appreciative. Staff seemed to work well together as a team. For example - when the towel hut was empty one morning, the nearest bartender popped over to help him so he didn’t have to wait. Another time, we called a cab and the staff made sure to ask and translate the price of our trip for us. We couldn’t stay up late enough to see the shows, but other guests said they were very good. The activities staff were a lot of fun.
