High Potential with Low Performance
Glenroy C (Ewing, New Jersey) on Jul 21, 2024
I'd like to add the disclaimer that we visited this resort after Tropical Storm Beryl hit the island. We had concerns and wondered if the resort would recommend cancelling if they were not ready to fully support their guests. The resort posted very little on social media but we were able to see they were cleaning up the property (broken glass, fallen trees, debris) via guests at the property. My wife and other family members felt assured and decided to go on this trip. Simply stated, this resort was not ready to fully accommodate and support their guests. As an American child of Jamaican parents, I've been very disappointed with the last 2 visits (2nd in 3 years). This will be our last visit for a while. We arrived to the resort around noon after waiting 30 minutes for the resort provided transfer which was fine. Ride was fine though our driver was whipping around these roads to overtake slower cars which is common here. We arrived safely so it's all good. Once we arrived, is when the issues started. We also didn't receive a welcome drink or cold towel when we arrived. I know checkin is usually 3/4 pm and we waited until after 3 to get into our room. My wife recently celebrated a birthday and I wanted to decorate the room, including the door. A concierge contacts you to pick packages and I was contacted by a concierge in Grenada (yes, Grenada). If my sister didn't email me the package sheet, I wouldn't have been able to purchase the package. Shout out to Talecia who did her best as there were outages that made it difficult to email and send WhatsApp texts. It was explained that the decoration caused the delay but my sister had a long delay getting in her room also. The room was decorated fine but they did not have the door decorations and offered no credit. After getting to our room, the saga continued. There were no towels in our room, we called immediately and were told they were on the way. It was very humid, we were sweaty and wanted to shower. The room smelled moldy which aggravated my wife's allergies. The AC was barely blowing and the USB ports were not working. We had dinner reservations at 8pm and by 7pm, we still had no towels. Our room overlooked the pool and I saw an attendant collecting wet towels and decided to get towels from him (sorry, I forgot his name). He said he had no clean towels on him and asked for my room #. In less than 15 minutes, he brought us plenty of towels. While I'm in the shower (with a weak flow), someone from housekeeping finally brought towels (almost 5 hours later). On the next day, we changed rooms and the decorations in the room weren't transferred over and I was over it and just wanted to enjoy the rest of the trip. The room change required packing up by noon but we wanted to inspect before officially changing. We waited another 3+ hours to get in the other room (they were making it perfect for us) before we could inspect it. Deandre, on the bell staff, was great in helping us move. The room we were moved to was further away from the lobby but the outlets worked, shower pressure and AC was better (AC still weak) and the smell was tolerable. What about the towels? There were none but we brought the towels the pool attendant gave us, called the front desk and hid them in the closet. When they brought towels, they brought no wash cloths or hand towels. The towel issue got resolved the next day but given how hot/humid it was and the apparent short-staffing due to the storm, they should have stocked more towels in the room. The resort was not full but this resort was not staffed properly at the front desk and housekeeping. The entertainment and bar/wait service by the pool and jerk hut was great. Food at the jerk hut was very good. Tameka and Jason provided great service by the pool and kept our drinks full. The food truck for burger setup needs improvement. There shouldn't be line for burgers and fries as these foods can be pre-cooked and kept under heated trays. I only ordered a hot dog from the truck and it was deep-fried and tasted awful. To accommodate our group, we were offered a cabana on the diamond side, where our rooms should have been moved. We had a cooler with drinks and you had food service which Andrew provided at a high level. As part of the birthday package, my wife and I got a 25 minute massage. It was for the beach but was moved to the spa; no big deal. When we arrived, we filled out the form and were taken to the locker. We were rushed and not given an opportunity to shower. As I've noted, it was hot. I took a quick shower in the massage rooms and the masseuse told us that our time started when we got to the room which totally killed the mood. My massage was fine and we went to the hydro area for 15 minutes though I would have appreciated a pool for a cold plunge. Note, you must tip in cash (not the room) and given the rush job, they were fortunate we left a tip. The casino is very small but is fine for those that like slots. I'm a blackjack guy so I only went in there to watch my wife play slots. The night time entertainment was enjoyable as well. Though I feel guest services and housekeeping were understaffed or unprepared, I don't feel the same with the dining areas. The buffet has a lot of variety the food is pretty good. I was annoyed they ran out of oxtails on Jamaica night but running out of food is the MO for anyone that dines regularly at Jamaican establishments. We ordered room service for breakfast and the food was very good. I found the food at all the restaurants to be very good and the portions were perfect; I don't like to waste food. TexMex fajitas were good even though they didn't provide enough tortillas but provided upon request. We enjoyed our sirloin steaks at the steakhouse even though my wife needs hers cooked well (health). The sides were very good as well. We enjoyed our meals at the Italian restaurant and the Jamaican restaurant (which I expected in JA) as well. Our hibachi meal was my favorite meal and the cooks were great. Our waitress kept disappearing and she was needed because the AC didn't work and they had to have fans, especially with a hot grill in front of us. Despite the AC issue (storm related), we made the best of it. Though the tv's in the sports bar weren't working consistently, the bar staff was great. The coffee shop/cafe staff were probably the least hospitable of all the staff. Some of them seemed like they wanted to be anywhere else. To summarize, this is a nice property with some very hard working staff. If they were not ready to support guests after the storm, they should have offered folks an opportunity to reschedule, made better concessions and not give empty apologies. The pool and restaurant staff were excellent and if we didn't experience check-in and room issues, our experience would have been much better. Unfortunately, our group with 4 booked rooms did not have a great experience. After reviewing the ratings by others and how they rate on this site (in Negril), we would have certainly chosen differently.
The GOOD the BAD and the UGLY

We decided to stay here instead of our usual resort in Jamaica. We had a good time overall ! However…. HOTEL ROOM: Its not a 4 star : First day , upon arrival killed 3 roaches. I’d give you a pass on 1 roach but 5 for the total stay - nope . Then spent 15 mins trying to clear mosquitos out the room. (Ofc JA has mosquitos but we couldn’t even enjoy our swim out and chill in that area because they were so bad ??- needs pest treatment) The aesthetic of the rooms is nice with the tub/shower /layout etc. but the floors could have been cleaner. ROOM SERVICE : on time when ordered POOL AREA: Fun /nice entertainment - few poolside cabanas HOWEVER they are FREE but hard to get - gotta go early and put your things down - really early FOOD: I’m not picky and I eat a lot of Jamaican food . I think the BUFFET food at the resort was just ok.. Jerk hut ????????. Hibachi- good but very hot inside no A/C Tex/Mex restaurant- good no A/C Good customer service at both OVERALL CUSTOMER SERVICE OF HOTEL : Ok .. The employees honestly didn’t seem to be very happy or friendly at first - just kind of going through the motions of the job and as a guest you can feel that and it throws off the vibe of what people expect especially in a place like Jamaica where everything is irie - but once you engage them they are friendly and joke around . Probably more of a management issue. ENTERTAINMENT: Good variety /Good HOTEL GROUNDS: NICE BEACH: NICE We didn’t feel like we got a good bang for our buck here and prefer returning to our go- to resort in Negril instead. Best of luck ???
