Don't waste your Money!

With this being our 8th all-inclusive (from 3.5*-5* previously) and our 3rd Secrets, I feel as if we are qualified to give this an accurate review... This resort, with it's age, food & service quality is no more than a 3-STAR resort. The location is stunning, but the overall experience is sub-par with many things around the resort being very dated and in need of updating. A few of the staff (mostly the doormen/bellhops & cleaning staff) were amazing but most of them did not make you feel welcome or appreciated, especially those that are in positions that are supposed to do this. I am a TA and after this visit and our visit to Secrets Bahia Mita I will NEVER recommend this brand or any of it's "sister" brands to any of my clients as there are far better resorts out there that actually treat the customer much better amd for a far better value.

Pretty awful...

Tori P (Charleston, South Carolina) on Feb 04, 2023

If all you're looking for is drinking all day in a (chilly) pool, there are less expensive resorts. We're UVC members and have been to dozens of Secrets and Dreams resorts, and we've only been to one that was as bad as this one. The St. James/Wild Orchid is not a luxury resort by any stretch--so much so that my husband and I left a day early because it was more stressful to be there than return to lives full of work, housework, kid care, etc. Let's start with the good: 1) World Cafe had a great variety of food for everyone's tastes and diets. Lots of plant-based food, as well as meats, cheeses, etc. We wished it was open for dinner because it was our favorite place to get good food. 2) There were typically loungers in the preferred pool area, though trying to find a worker to open the umbrella or bring a drink was hit-or-miss. Now for the bad: 1) They didn't have a Preferred Room for us (UVC members) but said our key card would get us into the preferred areas. Spoiler: it didn't. It turns out that it didn't matter, though, because anyone could go anywhere. So if you were paying for preferred privileges at this resort, you're not really getting anything for your money. At other properties, you need a key card to access the premium stuff. 2) With the exception of a couple of servers, service here was shockingly poor. Staff acted like we were in their way every single day. We had to move off the sidewalk multiple times so staff could walk two abreast. Every request was met with a "yeah, mon" but then never delivered. Then several staffers got on us, asking, "Why you so stressed?" Because we can't get any freaking service! 3) We couldn't get our room serviced for love nor money. We were there 5 days, and it was only done once. To top it off, the staff tried to make it our fault by saying our red privacy light must have been on. We argued that we weren't new to these properties and knew about the light--and that it wasn't on. They insisted it must have been the case. When we returned to our room, we confirmed that the light was NOT freaking on. We tried to get them to do our room through the app, through the in-room tablet, by calling the front desk, and by walking down and asking them. Nothing. We had overflowing garbage, no tissues, no towels, etc. 4) The rooms are dated and, frankly, a little dangerous. The shower leaked into the main part of the bathroom and into the toilet area, the toilets can't even flush down pee, electricity plates were hanging off the wall with exposed wires, hanging lights over the bed (2 on each side) caused us to bump our heads multiple times a day, and it was just pretty grimy. 5) Three resorts share this property. The St. James, Wild Orchid, and Breathless are so close that you can't tell when you exit one and enter the other. And all guests use the restaurants, so if you aren't there right when they open at 6:00, you'll be waiting quite a while. Same with the loungers at the pool and beach area. I never saw one empty chair the entire time. It's too many people for such limited resources, and we weren't even there in what I would consider a high-traffic time. 6) The gym is fine, equipment-wise, but everything is very close together. There's no room to move about, so it feels crowded even with just a couple of people in there. 7) Except for one bartender in the Piano Bar, trying to get a real cocktail wasn't happening. The Preferred Club didn't even have a real bar--just a corner with alcohol and someone who had zero idea how to mix anything. We eventually just started asking for straight whiskey or rum punch (which was the only thing staff seemed to know how to make) wherever we went. Our opinion? Some of the staff were doing the best they could (others were just plain rude), which made us think this is a problem at the corporate level. If your resort is part of a brand like Hyatt, then it needs to be consistent. Where is the training? Where is the pride in product? People can overlook a lot if they feel like staff 1) know what they're doing and 2) have been trained in what the service culture should look like.
