A very poor experience at property that is need of repairs and upgrades.

G5802CWjamesp on Jan 25, 2023

Upon arrival there were no available staff to take our luggage to our room. The property in general is in need of repairs. Amenities such as a place to charge electronics are not available, I had to get on my knees to find and outlet to charge my phone. The food was at best average to below and the staff paid little or no attention to refilling drinks during the meals. If you enjoy walking up steps to get to your room then you are in the right place. The bathroom was so dark it was hard to see to shave. The mini bar which was supposed to be restocked daily was not. I could go on and on but it is safe to say I will not be returning any time soon. I have stayed at Couples in the past but this experience was not a good one!

True 5 Star Luxury!

IanBeth2018 (Halifax Regional Municipality, Canada) on Jan 25, 2023

Where do we start with this exceptional resort? Over and over again during our stay, we referred to it as “the resort that keeps on giving”! With the ability to pre-check in online before travelling, our check in process at the resort took 6 minutes from the time we stepped out of the van upon arrival. We have never seen that level of service in the Caribbean before, but quickly realized that this resort was so far above the many others we have visited that a super high level of service is the norm at CSA. In short…everything the resort could control was quite simply… perfect! The Jamaican people – warm, intelligent, soft spoken in general, Jamaicans are the perfect hosts. They know they live in a special place, and it gives them pleasure to share it with those who appreciate it. The beach – it’s the seven-mile beach in Negril…hard to top that right out of the gate. The entire resort was raked and litter free the entire time we were there, so the beach was amazing. The only drawback we found (and certainly NOT the fault of the resort) was guests thinking it was OK to go down early to throw a towel over a chair to “reserve” it for hours and hours while they were elsewhere. The resort staff advised anyone seeing an unattended “reserved” chair to simply remove the towel and use the chair, but many were still unwilling to risk a possible confrontation. The pools – (on the resort side of the road) there are two very nice, but largely ignored and almost unused pools. The pools are well maintained, but the vast majority of guests prefer the beach. The room – large, beautiful, clean, well appointed with a wonderful king bed, and an amazing terrace that became one of our favorite places. We ended up ordering coffee, juice and pastries every single morning, which were delivered at our requested time, directly to our terrace. (this is only one of the included services). Even though the resort was very clear about their non-smoking policy, and provided designated areas to smoke in (even placing signs and cards on the patios as gentle reminders), our neighbours upstairs decided that these rules did not apply to them. We were greeted every morning by clouds of their cigarette smoke blowing in, including them throwing their butts off their patio and the butts landing on ours. We had to brush their ashes and their used butts off our terrace a few times. Again, not much the resort can do when people decide they are above the rules, but it was an annoyance in an otherwise perfect location. Our room was cleaned spotlessly every day, and every evening we had the option of a turn down service, again included. The room had a great shower, tons of hot water and water pressure, a mini bar that was stocked daily (and a lovely big umbrella for the one time it rained). Room level – 5 star. The food – this is one of the reasons to go to Jamaica, and CSA did not disappoint in any way. There are only two restaurants where reservations are required, easiest done through the Couples app on your smartphone. One is an Asian Fusion style (Lemongrass) that was excellent, and one called Feathers (continental with a Caribbean flair) where we had what was quite possibly the very best Beef we have ever been served. So good that we had to go back and have it again later in the week. These two restaurants have limited capacity; I suggest you make the reservations as quickly as you can using the app. But…if you don’t go to these two…there are still 5 star options available to you. The Palms (main buffet) was always really good, and changed up their themed dishes every night. Our recommendation is to walk the length of the buffet before choosing your meal…there were always special goodies tucked away that were worth trying, and many choices to fill your plate. They also held an amazing Jamaican Beach Party Evening which offered authentic Jamaican dishes cooked and served right on the beach – don’t miss this one! Perhaps this is a good time to mention our one suggestion for Couples. The only thing that we found somewhat underwhelming was the coffee. As habitual Jamaican visitors, we know the coffee to be exceptional - High Mountain or Blue Mountain coffee is always a pleasure. Though the equipment for expresso and cappuccino was onsite in The Palms, the staff did not seem to have the training or skills to make it, and in a full week we had one semi-ok cappuccino (almost no foam), with many attempts not working out well at all. We believe there would be definite guest interest and appreciation in a proper coffee bar with a barista. The excursions – (included – make sure to book the catamaran – a fun cruise that goes up past the famous Rick’s Café. You can jump off the boat and swim in the beautiful water offshore. Well worth it and only takes a few hours.) Many activities are included at the resort, so make sure you check them out. There are also (of course) many outside excursions at additional cost for those with a particular desire, such as swimming with the dolphins. We went horseback riding on the beach and in the water (not included, but great!). The entertainment – There were several notable acts at the resort in the week we were there. The magician on Monday evening was great, as was the guest Reggae vocalist on Tuesday who sang in front of the house band. The solo guitarist who sang at the Wednesday evening beach bonfire was the best of the week by far and had us singing along and dancing in the warm white sand. There were also several Reggae performers after dinner each evening at The Palms who, while being basically okay, did not stand out because of the audio mix which muffled their voices (couldn’t understand what they were singing). The luxury – this is a real 5 star resort. The tablecloths and napkins are linen. The towels and bedding are soft and luxurious. The furnishings are new or perfectly maintained. The discreet staff see to your every wish immediately. The grounds are immaculate. Everything you would expect in a boutique luxury resort is what you find here. Couples Swept Away, the resort that keeps on giving, delivered a first class luxury vacation to us, and we will most definitely be back.
