A Stain on Loews Brand - quite disappointing.
NYC11211bburg (Brooklyn, New York) on Jun 28, 2022
I found this hotel to be very poor in service. The outside hotel itself is quite nice. The pools are very nice and I like that two are open till 11pm. The spa definitely needs updating and is poor value (but what isn't here). The inside is underwhelming and in no way luxurious. If you are thinking a luxury room and spa bath reminiscent of the Mediterranean shores of Italy - you should think more along the lines of a chain Italian restaurant with a certain dank smell. In particular the hallways are stark and institutional in feel. Check in was particularly challenging. With my family we arrived at 3pm - please note that check in is at 4pm (as I was reminded several times). Also please note, and this is coming for an Assistant Manager, check-in is NOT guaranteed at 4pm. Personally, I waited from 3pm to 5:20pm for my room. The front desk said they would text me when it was ready. At around 4:45pm I finally called and after being put on hold and then transferred around to a couple people an assistant manager was on the phone who told me my room was undergoing "final inspection" and that it would be ready within ten minutes. It was past 5pm at this point. I asked about check-in at 4pm and she frankly said that nothing is guaranteed and that they "try" to have rooms ready by 4pm. She also thanked me "for my patience". This is a phrase you will hear throughout your stay - so much I believe it should be the tagline for the hotel: "Loews Portofino - thank you for your patience." She said I would receive a text with my room number within a few minutes. After continuing to wait another 30 minutes, I finally got frustrated and went to the front desk. Still never receiving a text and after waiting in line again for another ten minutes, I was finally able to ask the front desk if I have a room. After a couple phone calls the man said my room was available but they would need to swap my keys out (?) - there was no explanation as to why. He went behind the desk and and emerged a few minutes later with new keys and sent me on my way. My room is on the first floor with a view of a bush (in their defense - it did say Garden View). Perhaps this was payback - so beware. All of this is somewhat minor in the grand adventure of life but when you are paying in excess of $700 a night I would expect more and this is quite disappointing. There were grumblings at the front desk that they did not have enough staff but they certainly are not passing the savings in salaries on to their guests. In fact their entire strategy seems to make you feel grateful you got a room in the first place. The room is fine. Also stark with one picture on the wall and not much else. The bathroom is large but otherwise quite basic. The bed is comfortable. I have stayed at many Loews before - they are one of my favorite brands. This is basically a 2-star hotel with the Loews brand name - but I struggle with that because I've gotten better service at 2-star hotels. So beware and lower your expectations significantly. Most people stay here for the Lightning Pass. It is a good, and perhaps only, benefit to staying at this hotel. A power dynamic I now fully believe they are taking advantage of. I cannot speak to the other "luxury" properties at Universal but if you are expecting the same level of service at a high-end Disney resort - just don't and be thankful you eventually got a room. I would complain to management - but I already talked to a manager and I'm not sure where to go to after that. She thanked me "for my patience".
Excellent overall!

The hotel was convenient, clean, detailed, and the staff was amazing. So friendly and helpful. We loved everything about the property and our stay there. The beach pool had tons of kid friendly activities.
