Bad service! Ruined our trip!

We are an active duty Navy family. My husband is Navy Captain with 20 years of service. He is currently deployed and expected home sometime next year . I made a hotel reservation for Thanksgiving week at Lowes Portofino in Orlando, FL. I have never traveled with my 2 boys alone. My youngest is disabled, has autism and can either be an A plus traveler or it could be a nightmare. I placed my bets hoping for the best. I made the reservation under my husbands American Express account not realizing the nightmare that would ensue in doing this. I am an account manager on all of his accounts. I can do everything he can do. I have a POA as most spouses do. He has deployed 7 times since we’ve been married. This is his 3rd deployment in the last 5 years. Everything is joint, it has to be. I arrive to check in at Loews Portofino with my 2 boys and I am told they need (husband) to check in as he is the one who made the reservation. I clarify and tell the front desk agent that it was me that me that made the reservation. Sorry, I guess I made it through his login. I’m the one checking in. Here’s my ID and credit card. I’m thinking this is no big deal at this point. The reservation was for 1 adult and 2 children. They refused to let me check in. I said well here, let me cancel this reservation as I am holding up my phone showing the Amex app where I made the reservation and rebook under my name since I am the one checking in. They said no. I am confused as to what the issue is and they state that only (husband)can check in. I reiterate to the agent that (husband) is in the middle of an ocean somewhere far away and he won’t be checking in. It was me that made the reservation. It’s just me and the kids. He said sorry, you can’t check in. The manager comes out as I am in tears at this point. There isn’t a hotel room to be found in Universal Orlando 3 days before Thanksgiving. I just kept thinking how awful it would be to have to turn around, get back on a plane and go home the same day we arrived without having a vacation. The manager said do you have the credit card the reservation was made under? I said, oh yes! Here’s my Amex card. She said sorry the account numbers don’t match. I am confused again. It is the same account!! The last 4 digits are different and she again said sorry we can’t help you. She then states that for security purposes that if I have (husband) call then she can check me in. For security? So I can have a random male call her and tell her to check me in claiming to be (husband) and that is her version of security? How would she verify his identity over the phone? It was obvious she was making things up at this point. I don’t know what they thought I was trying to do. I still don’t know. The reservation was for 1 adult and 2 kids and that’s who was checking in. The manner in which I was treated was awful. There was no willingness to help me resolve the situation that was actually obtainable. In a full blown panic attack I step away and call American Express and they call the front desk and tell them to check me in. This ordeal took over an hour! I will never stay at this hotel again. It was absolutely awful and ruined our entire expensive vacation. I have never been treated so poorly. I still don’t know what they thought I was trying to do. Steal my husbands reservation?? We have the same last name and I have a military ID. What did they think I was trying to do? I do not recommend this hotel at all! Absolutely horrible service!

Changed… not for the better

Have stayed at Portofino many times. First visit post pandemic. Significant changes in the Club provision. What was once a relaxing and classy area has been transferred into a school cafeteria with dining choices to reflect. Absolute zoo. Paper cups, plastic ‘glasses’, very ‘low rent’ and what I expect from a motel not an allegedly 4 star .Staff in the Club lounge were at times dismissive, and at others, frankly condescending. Turn down is now by ‘request’ which you have to send a text to access. Not possible without a US phone without great expense. We were in a Accessible room, which we didn’t need but we’re given as had king bed, but it was a very poor attempt at mitigating disability. Someone who needed this type of service would have been unable to shower. Very disappointed with the experience on the whole, however 2 pluses. The beds and linens are superb, and the place was spotless throughout. But So far from the service of previous years. We won’t be back.
