A Sweet Stay with a Side of Waffles, Witnesses, and Wristbands!
Daniel C on Aug 19, 2024
Our recent stay at the Marriott SpringHill Suites in Lake Buena Vista South at Calypso Cay Resort was a delightful escape with a few quirky surprises. From check-in, the staff were incredibly friendly—like, Disney-cast-member friendly. Our room was spacious and spotless, with just enough “vintage charm” to remind you that, yes, time does pass. But hey, it was clean, comfortable, and plenty big enough for the two of us. Breakfast was perfectly adequate—until the Great Waffle Station Siege of 2024. Apparently, waffles are a rare treasure here, as some guests decided to monopolise the station for a full 25 minutes (yes, we timed it), leaving the rest of us with cold cereal and dashed syrup dreams. We tended to arrive around 7am for breakfast to see off the most disruptive offenders. The pool was great, with plenty of sunbeds to go around, though the pool bar prices were a bit much for what they offered—$15 for a cocktail and $16 for a beer (although you could keep the plastic glass as a free gift; felt more like I was paying for a mini tropical vacation *inside* my vacation. Oh, and speaking of prices, prepare to shell out $15 for a wristband if you want to use the rock climbing wall or the zip line for the day. I passed, choosing to keep our feet firmly on the ground (preferably with a drink in hand). But my little one said it was like Peter Pans flight if it was open. But, the most surprising twist? The resort tends to fill up with Jehovah’s Witnesses over the weekend. Now, I’m all for freedom of belief, but being pressured into a religious conversation while trying to sunbathe or relax in the hot tub isn’t quite what I had in mind for my relaxation time. Let’s just say it was a bit…distracting and not the ‘Good News’ I was hoping to come my way. All in all, though, we enjoyed our stay. Would we return? Sure—with a game plan for the waffle line, a cocktail budget in mind, and a new pair of noise-cancelling headphones for those "spiritual conversations." I’d happily return to this hotel when I come back to Disney again. But after walking 200 miles in two weeks. I’m taking an actual holiday.
