Expected Better

robhouse (Fareham, United Kingdom) on Jul 03, 2022

We stayed for one night towards the end of June and were left very disappointed. The hotel was super busy when we arrived, so we parked in the nearby Rideau Centre and walked from there. It took ~30 minutes for us to check-in and a further 10 minutes to reach our room due to the lifts being in various states of repair. The pool was also closed for the duration of our stay, but we would probably not have had time to use this anyway. Our room was spacious and comfortable enough, but the bathroom had not been cleaned to an acceptable standard. There were long black hairs on the side of the bathtub and more were present alongside the toilet. Had the hotel been quieter, we would have asked for a different room, but with the hotel being as busy as it was, we decided to put up with it rather than wait another 40 minutes. We were also disappointed that the room had no complimentary water given that the outside temperatures were in the high eighties. In the morning we opted for the buffet breakfast which was of a reasonable quality. The pastries and fresh fruit were good, but the cooked food was not warm enough because other guests were leaving the lids open. I feel that staff should have been keeping an eye on this as it was not good from a food hygiene perspective. We would have liked to have seen some fruit juice and water available as part of the buffet too.

Great location, needs some upgrade

311kimberleys (Duncan, Canada) on Jun 28, 2022

First trip to Ottawa, great history in Hotel & location. The Hotel services were satisfactory but shortfalls in any special touches perhaps more obvious due to coming from smaller boutique hotel in Montreal for F1? In our four days there was rarely bell person opening front doors to enter or exit, never all elevators functioning, always maintenance personnel present in lobby/elevators/access doors/public areas/etc. In our one bedroom suite the separation doors between bedroom and living space did not latch closed defeating the purpose of watching tv in separate living area. The view of Parliament and Canal was spectacular albeit from two smaller windows. The shower head lever was snapped right off so it could not be secured in any position other than at the bottom of rod facing the tile. Again with special touches at other hotels; bottle of water with fresh glasses left of bedside table, fresh flowers, pillow favors, etc. definitely personal touches go a long way especially in an aging hotel. Concierge service was outstanding, made suitable site seeing suggestions, accommodated dining reservations perfectly, etc.
