A bit of a let down !

We booked two residence suites (2 bed + 3 bed) for two weeks for our entire family (7 adults, an infant and a baby). The resort was clean and the grounds well groomed and the staff were very attentive to our needs when we attended one of their restaurants, being around the pool(s) or down at the beach. They provided us with two cribs and blankets for our little travellers. Meals were very good but some nights the service was exceptionally slow, which made it difficult to keep a 2-year old entertained while waiting for our meals to arrive. The breakfast buffet at the resort was very good with an excellent variety of Mexican and American dishes to choose from. The resort hosted a “Mexican night” each Tuesday down at the beach-front restaurant with a great selection of local food, culture with a fabulous mariachi band to entertain you through dinner. Our biggest issue was that when we booked with the resort we were told that the suites offered “fully equipped kitchens”. Unfortunately, when we checked-in there wasn’t any cutlery, knives, pots, dishes, toaster or anything else you would expect to find in a “fully equipped kitchen”. When we arrived there was only a few espresso cups, a stove top, microwave and a (noisy) fridge. There also wasn’t any paper towels, dish soap, dish towels or dish cloths. It took us a few days, and lots of calls to room service, to finally get our kitchen properly stocked. We were also advised when we checked-in that our fridge would be re-stocked daily with bottled water and beer, but we had to call room service every day to make that happen. The suites were nice but are starting to show some wear and tear, i.e. no switch on some of the lamps so you need to screw in the bulb to get the light to come on, a leaking toilet from the suite above us, a semi-plugged shower drain, chipped paint, etc. Trying to get hot water was a frustrating process as we had to turn on the shower 10 minutes before you wanted to use it and we never did get hot water out of the kitchen tap. I would have given this resort a 5 star review if it wasn’t for the issues we had with our suite and poor room service.

Sunshine and crocodiles

We had a great time in the sun here. Our stay was overall very good and we love coming to Mexico in the throes of winter. Crocodiles limited our time in the ocean to just two days, but that’s just a crazy thing about Mexico now. What time was spent in the water was great with access to boogie boards to enjoy the waves. The beds are perhaps a bit lacking, too soft in my opinion. Also the suite had literally nothing in the kitchen if you even wanted to make your own food… Which we did not. We really appreciated the laundry in the suite however. Be careful on the pool deck on the sky lounge. Incredibly slippery and I am thankful for strong bones as an older person would have fractured a hip for sure on that surface with the tumble I took dead sober grabbing my 1 year old out of the water. The staff were very kind and helpful. We especially appreciated the service from Octavio and Elian at the Lemongrass poolside bar/restaurant. They hustled all day to keep everyone looked after and were a lot of fun as well. They made our stay special.

What's happened to our once favorite resort ?

It seems this resort has lost the plot when it comes to value for money. As long time members we have seen a decline in quality year after year. For some reason known only to them, they decided that having a first class restaurant ,Omaggio, serving breakfast from a menu, a menu that is available to view in the room, was a bad idea after years of great food and service they decided to make it a very, very mediocre buffet. We only went once and once for dinner which was also a disaster. So for dinner you are forced to use INSU which is a great tapas bar or the only decent restaurant on the property, Mozza Mare. They haven't messed with the Lemongrass bar yet and I hope they leave it alone. For a so called 5 star resort having really only 2 places to have dinner is a bit thin. It seems every year the price for us goes up and the service declines. The wine selection is pathetic unless you want to pay an additional 50-80 USD per bottle. We were in a penthouse which was awesome but if you wanted a hot shower forget it or wait 5-10 minutes for hot water which lasted for maybe 2 minutes before going cold again. If it wasn't for the amazing staff at this resort which we have come to consider good friends, we'd probably pass and just use Emotions, where at least the buffet is awesome and at half the cost.

Consistently wonderful ….

As always….. a great stay at the Marival. It had been way too long since our last visit but the feeling was the same. The staff here treat you as family….. Manuel, Elian, Lamberto, Jared in fact all the staff at Lemon grass and pool servers are outstanding. Felix always took great care of our comfort around the pool. Mozzamare is always beautiful and a great dinner as well. New updates to furniture in the lobby and Lemon Grass area are fantastic. Rooms were clean spacious and well maintained as always. Beach was well maintained and the taco bar by the beach is fantastic for lunch. Would love to see the appetizer menu return at Brunello. Definitely miss the Olive Tapenade. We will be back and will try not to wait as long next time.
