Can’t beat the price. Don’t expect 4 star

motherofthyme (Victoria, Canada) on Jan 28, 2023

This resort is a bit confusing as it says it’s on the beach but the accommodations are actually on the other side of their time share building. So you walk through a green space past tennis/pickle ball courts and into the “club” portion which is meant to be the activity centre with a stage, a pool, a swim up bar, a couple of fast food stands (pizza and burgers) and the beachfront which has steps down to the sand and a decent amount of shoreline to view from the edge of the wall. Having said that there is also a pool at the accommodation main building with a swim up bar and that is where the buffet restaurant and a la crate restaurant are. The best rooms are ground floor with a sliding glass door out to a small patio with table and two chairs. Not much furniture inside but who sits there anyway! There is also a well kept secret dancing bar open in the evening but we didn’t go there in the evening. There is lots of music playing at both pools which seems to vary depending on who is responsible for it. One of the guests actually brought a playlist on a stick that they played one day- music that most middle aged Anglo people enjoy which made a nice change from La Bamba played 3 times a day. The resort is old and needs updating. The fixtures are rusty and the tub chipped, the sliding glass doors need their latches checked (ours didn’t lock until the outdoor handle actually snapped off and they came and repaired both) but there is a safe which we kept everything locked up in and didn’t feel there was a big problem. In fact we left our sliding door slightly open so we could go in and out easily. Otherwise the rooms are clean , although the King size bed sheets didn’t cover the foot of the bed. The room was musty smelling which we have found to be common in hot humid climates in old buildings. We closed the drains, covered the gap under the door, left the fan on in the bathroom and didn’t use the air conditioner more than needed and this helped considerably. The mattress looked new and was clean miraculously. Sheets weren’t changed during our week stay but were tightened up. They also came around in the evening to check to see if we needed anything(towels, soap, coffee, water etc). There wasn’t any Kleenex in the room but they brought some when I asked. The food was not to our taste in the buffet although there were a lot of options for mostly local food. This resort has a high Mexican guest population so it felt more authentic and was lovely to see young families there. We never saw or heard any issues with children. We used the a la cart restaurant a few nights and it was very good. You are able to choose a 3 course meal from two or three choices for each course. Beautifully presented and tasty. It’s included in the all inclusive bands but for others there is a fee. Well worth it. The only issue is that they rotate through only 4 set themes and so we would have liked more variety. The front desk service is challenging as very few people speak much english. We were given no orientation to the hotel so spent a few days trying to figure out what we were eligible for, as benefits of paying all inclusive, or even where things were! There is a QR code in the front hall which downloads a good (but not always accurate) document with a map, list of tv channels, activity schedule, and list of hours for each restaurant . It still wasn’t clear if we could have the lobster for free (we weren’t interested but got differing answers from different people. The servers were all very friendly and made efforts to personalize the experience. They tried to get to know you, provided things they knew you wanted and even chatted about their lives. One girl was trying to learn english and French so had a note book and we wrote phrases for her and helped her pronounce them, so sweet. This is the strength of this hotel: the clientele were down to earth people, the staff were real people not just their jobs, and the atmosphere was relaxed and you got to know other guests. A real holiday. As this hotel has a time share portion be prepared to be approached to “have a 4 star breakfast while we show you what we offer for an hour to an hour and a half “ and give you $2000 pesos hotel credit to use for massage, or towards tours (usually priced about 1500 per person) but not the cheaper city tour which you get a discount on . But you have to give them a 20 deposit for the privilege! Really not worth the time. When we told them we had to leave after 1 and 1/2 hours they get quite nervous and said we should rebook it for another day. Very deceptive, other guests said it was more like 2 to 3 hours. And they were taking down peoples passports and a copy of their credit cards! Not happening. We were able to get our deposit back but even that took some time. Don’t fall for it. Wifi works best outside the rooms, in the pool area and not at all in the “club” area by the beach. Bottom line: if you can get past the weaknesses, and recognize the strengths, the cost is hard to beat.

Try somewhere else

I visited this place for two nights the last week of October, I booked two rooms on my name but didn’t realize I book one with all inclusive and the other was not. At the time of check in I try to get the one all inclusive for my wife and self and the other to my minor step child, the lady at the check in was super rude and decided to do the opposite and would not listen to what I had to say. The place is nothing like the pictures, if you are coming from the states just picture a hotel 8 type of the highway, smelly, bugs and old. The house keeping lady and the restaurant staff were super nice and I thought I should mention it.
