Great holiday but hotel needs attention

We are on our last full day before our departure tomorrow (23 Feb). This is my 5th time in the DR but first time at this hotel. We were on holiday with my sister and her partner and this was their first long haul holiday. We arrived on the 12 February in the late afternoon. Check in was quick and we were introduced to our ‘butler’ Richard. He showed us to our rooms and explained where the bars and restaurants were etc. I’m not sure what his role actually is as we’ve only seen him one more time whilst we’ve been here. We were all in the same block, our room was 54217 - the room was lovely but did smell a little musty. As we were tired after a long day of travelling, I didn’t mention it. However, the smell was so bad I couldn’t sleep and the damp affected my Asthma quite badly. I went to reception early next morning and reported it and we were given another room later that day. We are in block 57 with lovely views of the garden. Prior to our holiday I had tried booking the a la cart restaurants but it would only let me book for me and my husband and not my sister and her partner despite it being one booking as opposed to 2 separate bookings. We decided to wait until we got to the hotel before booking any more dates. However, on our second day we went to reception to try add the other two people to our booking but the restaurant (Italian) was fully booked for the rest of our 11 night holiday. We checked other a la cart restaurants and this was pretty much the same; either no availability or late dining times of 9pm onwards. When we addressed this with the relevant person he said he had booked all 4 of us for the next evening and we were just to ‘turn up’ and the restaurant would be aware of the booking he had made - when we got there, there wasn’t any booking in our name but, they did let us in for food. We gave up trying to book any other restaurants at this point. Food: breakfast is ok, nothing special and the food area is small in comparison to other hotels I’ve been to. The waiting staff are friendly but do seem to favour the American/Canadian people; they are constantly topping up their drinks while we constantly have to ask for drinks. Buffet: now for me this is an area that needs attention. It is like a cattle market! The food area again is way too small and the food variety is poor, especially for vegetarians. I can usually get by on salad but the choice is poor! We decided to visit the hotel next door, La Romana, and the food and dining areas are a lot better. The pool areas are good especially the quiet pool. Let’s hope there’s never any need for the life guard - he just sat there all day showing little interest in anything. In fact, one day I reported to him people were smoking in the pool and he just shrugged his shoulders! The good points are the staff, they absolutely make your holiday! I’m going to name the few who for our party of 4, made our holiday: at the quiet pool swim up bar there is Anthony, Marianne and Niella (sorry of misspelled), these 3 people are a credit to the hotel. Then down at the outside bar near reception, the evening staff are Patricia and Louis, again great people who always have a smile on their face. The grounds are impeccable - absolutely spotless. The rooms are large and spacious it are in need of a little TLC. The room is made up every day but the minibar is hit and miss as to when they restock it. It is now Thursday and ours hasn’t been restocked since Tuesday. Overall we have had a great holiday but this is more to do with the company we kept and the above named staff not necessarily the hotel and its facilities. We did have a couple of issues, however, these were sorted and how a complaint is handled is important and ours were handled swiftly. Would I return, yes but it would have to be a great deal as I feel we’ve paid a lot for this holiday and I’ve had better for less.

Food is sub-par, no elevators, butler?

Grounds were impeccable. Room was clean and spacious. Entertainment crew worked very hard but got repetitive, I have 4 main complaints. 1. Buffet was unimpressive and bordered on awful compared to other all inclusives we have been to. Very evident they reused food next day. 2. Sit downs were good - but sometimes could not get a reservation. At all inclusive you should NOT have to fight for reservations. 3. No elevators for 3 stories. Difficult when drunk. 4. One couple had a butler. Other did not. Either you have one or you don’t. Make it clear from the start and what they are there for.
