The good, the bad and the noisy

adanac55 (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada) on Feb 19, 2024

First off I wanted to clarify that we are seasoned travellers and are coming from the perspective of someone who does many reviews and always tries to see the positive in a property. It’s important to choose a resort for yourself that suits your likes. I hope to paint a clear picture of The Dominicus Palace so you can hear about our experience and decide if this resort is for you. Communication - 1/5 - in advance I emailed the manager of rooms as well 3 other staff on the team and mentioned this trip was for my 60th birthday. We booked an ocean view superior room in a newer renovated building and received a dated room facing the public beach parking lot and mini club play equipment. One staff member even admitted it was one of the oldest rooms. Essentially our view from our balcony was a barbed wire fence with people changing out of their bathing suits and their accompanying loud motorcycles. This was a huge disappointment. Front desk - 5/5 - Freddy was wonderful in moving us to a room that matched the description to what we had booked and paid for plus indicative of a room for a special milestone birthday celebration. This process unfortunately took one and half days but we finally got moved to the Arabela renovated building on the top floor with a beautiful ocean view. Freddy dealt with our situation in the most professional manner and we were grateful for his tireless work. Front lobby area and common buildings - 5/5 - We were really impressed with the updated look in the front lobby, the main buffet building, alacarte restaurant buildings, snack bars, upstairs seating area and shops. The furniture in these common areas are updated and very nice. Love the ocean view from many restaurants. Grounds and gardens - 5/5 - Well maintained and beautiful! The grounds are lush and there are beautiful plants and flowers throughout the property. The orchids that are attached to the palm trees are stunning. The ducks and fish in the ponds and the fountains really add to the beauty of this property. The entire resort was clean and tidy. Wheel chair accessibility - 5/5 - I have never seen a property that goes to the lengths that this one does to accommodate people with mobility issues. There are even designated spots on the beach you can take your wheelchair and transfer into a lounge chair. Well done Viva! Pools - 5/5 - There are 2 pools on the Palace side (1 main and 1 sports) and another 3 pools on the Viva Beach Resort side (1 by buffet/courtyard, 1 infinity ocean side and 1 by La Roca buffet). We loved you could see the ocean from almost all the pools. The physical aspect of the pools is very good and all are well maintained. They have nice lounge chairs around the pools and between the umbrellas and the towering palm trees there is usually a spot to find shade if you go early or late in the day. Peacefulness - 1/5 - If you want a peaceful time by a pool this will be a challenge. There is really loud music that is played by the entertainment team at all the pools throughout the day. The only exception is the infinity pool but you can still hear hear the music from the nearby pools if you’re actually sitting at the infinity pool so essentially there are no pools exclusively peaceful and quiet. You will go to one pool for an hour or so and find some peace but then the music will again start so now you will have to try and find seats at another pool and that may be difficult. Then, the loud music will play at the new spot you found and now you will need to move yet again. Count on moving a lot. Don’t worry, you’ll get your steps in a day. We averaged 7000 steps each day on our iPhones trying to find a quiet spot. In the evening when you are trying to sleep you will hear loud music coming from either direction. Even with the air conditioning on you will still hear it. Both the Palace and the Beach resort have entertainment running into the evening while you’re trying to sleep. The Palace side is less loud and congested with people than the Beach Resort but compared to many other resorts we’ve been to these properties are fairly loud. High volume music (if you like this)- 5/5 - If you want to hear loud music throughout the day and in the evening at a higher volume than normal you will really find this fun. It doesn’t matter which pool you go to you will be able to hear the music. In the evening when you are going to sleep you will be blessed with loud music at 11pm to lull you to sleep. If you like loud music then this will be great for you otherwise this may be a struggle for you if you want peace and quiet. There are many areas you can find that are filled with people having fun. The courtyard area of the Beach Resort is a hub of activity. This area generates the most noise. Food - 5/5 - The food was much better than what many reviewers comment on and what we expected. There are many choices of places to eat and a large variety of food at each place. The quality of the food was excellent. Only issue we had was the vegetarians in our family had a hard time figuring out which food did it have meat in it since certain pasta and vegetable dishes were mixed with meat and there were no labels to figure it out. Suggestion would be to have designated areas in buffets that were truly vegetarian or make vegetarian labels (just a symbol like a carrot which many popular restaurants use to show on a menu) so there is no confusion. Service - 3/5 - This is definitely hit and miss and we tipped a lot. There is a small percentage of staff who are trained in how to serve. Many look unhappy. Count on serving yourself for many things. This is another way you will get your steps in. Alcohol - 2/5 - After day 2 this was a dry February for me. I’ve been to 3 star resorts in Cuba and been able to still enjoy the alcohol but this resort had horrible wine and local watered down low alcohol booze. My husband was able to pay a bartender extra $ tip to get a better rum but that was the only time an opportunity to drink regular alcohol occurred. The beer is all draft presidente and I’d classify it as a very light, light beer. Put it this way, we didn’t see one tipsy person the entire trip. Recommend you bring your own alcohol from duty free or try and find a spot in town to buy your own. Beach - 5/5 - The beach is truly wonderful. Lots of palm trees for shade and many lounge chairs. Only issue is the lounge chairs are super tightly placed together so you are right up against your neighbour. The only less crowded area was near the point around the Viva Cafe outdoor salad restaurant but they were doing construction on the point the week we were there so sadly no peace there either. The Viva resorts take up a very wide beach frontage compared to other resorts along that strip so consider this resort to be the most spacious of them all. Entertainment - 5/5 - The team work very hard to have something to do all the time. Lots of entertainment options from morning to late at night. It’s unfortunate there aren’t options for people who don’t want to be in an entertainment area all the time. Summery - Would we return? Not unless they came up with a system where there was a designated quiet pool and beach area. We found our experience to be not very relaxing. It’s a shame because we love this area. Free from seeweed, warm climate and beautiful palm trees and foliage. So now you have the real deal you can decide if this place is for you. If you want a lively spot then this place is for you. If you want quiet and peace then maybe not the place for you.

Great Enterteinment, great vacation

Coco C on Feb 15, 2024

The resort is located on a lovely beach, our room overlooking the beach had a cute balcony. Entertainment is the real added value. Our congratulations go to the singer Paolo: his evening parties are the real show and his music at sunset is pure magic. The food is not of the highest level and neither are the drinks. Inside the resort there is a liquor store and you can buy drinks. The events organized by the entertainers are of a good standard. We had a great time at the foam party: Alessia is the best!
