Reviews
Pretty good - better than before (Great Wifi)
Jon Thomas S (Candia, New Hampshire) on Feb 03, 2023
We have been to Bavaro area many times, this is our second visit to this property, and although it was good last time as well (2016), one thing that is leaps better now is wifi. Wifi has always been pretty bad in the DR, i dont know if all hotels have improved in the past couple years or if it is just this one, but they actually have an infrastructure set up now that is pretty stable and works well in most locations (except beach), at our rooms it was good enough to do facetime and such. So the wifi is a plus here. The club-sales was not as aggressive this time, which was nice - perhaps we just put off the right vibe, they never approached us actually. Grand Palladium at the Bavaro Beach is really 4, perhaps even 5 hotels, there is Bavaro, which is the largest, we stayed here, there is Punta Cana which is about the same price but may be considered slightly more upscale, it is slightly smaller. Then there is the upscale Palace, and the exclusive TRS (and i think there is something else next to the TRS, but i am not sure what that is, high end stuff). You can walk everywhere and use all things except for some of it in the TRS area. We found the food to generally be better than average - it does not appear they do themes for different days anymore, but the variety was good and in general pretty good quality, and the cooking/custom-made staff is great. In 2016 we got a free upgrade at check-in and stayed in villa 19 at the ground floor (A Bavaro room, in the Punta Cana side of property - see map), a nice room. This time i found some special when booking, so i got a roof-top Jr Suite at a pretty good cost - the rooms we got where great (all of 1944-1947 are at the side where you get ocean view). The room has a Jacuzzi on top, which we did not use (because it would take 2 hours to fill, and we didnt really want to submerge in the tap water like that). Staff is good, tip a bit and they generally are very helpful. So what could be better? Management of wait staff at buffet restaurants. DR is always a bit laid back, but the ducking of a star is because of the service level at many buffet restaurant areas. In some cases it is young staff just not paying attention or not really wanting to work, in other cases it did seem like deliberate. Within a few days we had identified the restaurants and staff we liked, the ones that do pay attention, and we sought out the same seat area every time - and these few good ones we became good friends with, and we tipped them very well. I have two specific cases of horrible restaurant service i want to mention as the worst examples. 1 - At the breakfast buffet on the Punta Cana Side. I suspect that staff may have been told to serve lesser to guests with Bavaro Wrist Bands when in Punta Cana Area, felt like it anyway. This was breakfast, after 5 minutes we had to ask for coffee, they had walked by the table multiple times filling others. We never got a refill, several walk-bys - eventually i got up and grabbed to cans to fill our table myself. Water was never filled, not that we asked for that at breakfast. As we are leaving we get a smile and have a good day from the waitress who ignored and walked by our table the whole time, seemed like mocking. 2 - At lunch, beach buffet Punta Cana. We came late, around 2:30 so it was very busy. Was seated at a table that was missing silverware and glasses, had to fix that ourselves. Throughout the meal we asked for water 5 times, we NEVER got it, a mix of language-barrier and stupidity or unwillingness of some sort. We told one of the managers on the way out, that seemed to go on deaf ears. My recommendation to Palladium management is to set up a better structure of supervising restaurant serve staff, training!!! staff that has no service-inkling should not remain in such roles. So in general - this is a pretty good property, but you may have to do some work yourself to seek out and find the better waiter/waitress locations - as always, it pays to tip and get to know your waiters and bartenders. Top Pick bars: the pool bar on the punta cana side, closest to ocean - is better than any of the others, in selection and staff. Fernando, Michael and Pedro are the best service. Bavaro Lobby Bar - most of the ladies here are awesome, this location makes the best drinks. Top Pick Buffet Restaurants: Bavaro Breakfast buffet. Go in left side, sit near middle towards entrance. We forgot the name, but the waitress with blond short hair, she is awesome. Punta Cana Beach Snack Restaurant (lunch++), next to scuba diving stuff. Small and simple but generally good and easy, and the staff here is awesome
