Beautiful weather, clean resort, and friendly resort team but security presence was not our style

Jaguilar24 (Naperville, Illinois) on Dec 04, 2022

Overall we had a lovely vacation, that said, it's probably not a resort we will return to but there are a lot of positives and I've tried to be pretty even-handed in my overview. I'll break my review into what we thought was great and then what we thought could have been better for us. I've also thrown in some tips for your visit at the bottom. What we loved - Our concierge (Febe) was very sweet and helpful, just a genuinely kind and wonderful person - The resort is very clean, constant work was underway all day every day to maintain and clean, you couldn't have found a spot of dirt or trash if you tried. - There are a few swim up bars, our favorite was on the back end of the Zavaz restaurant this is the pool area where they also did some activities including some wellness classes. - Excursions are available through the resort and they make it pretty easy to book these - - I would strongly suggest ignoring any of the individuals that may approach you at the airport and managing reservations through the resort team - they know the ins and outs and will make sure you are taken care of (sep post on Isla de Mujeres excursion posted on this topic). - As you might imagine - great weather and great food! There was only one restaurant the week we were there that we found to be pretty meh (see below). - Resort indicates that reservations are required for dinner, the week we were there they did not require reservations (occupancy was 80% so they didn't feel it necessary) - we had to wait about 45 min for a table a couple of times but it wasn't a big deal. - Evening shows were great and a lot of fun - had some musical acts, an illusionist, very well done and our whole family enjoyed. - Daily wellness activities - Jorge was amazing, he teaches a lot of the wellbeing activities and was great. - In room safe available in each room - Daily room service available - All of the restaurants were great except Zavaz - the food was not good the night we were there and our waiter was a ghost. Everything else was great - our favorite was Siena, we loved it for lunch and dinner- sooo good What we didn't love - The beach is almost non-existent, apparently it washed away in a hurricane the fall of 2021. It's about 10 feet from the break wall to the water and the first two feet of beach between the water and the sand is a dumping ground for seaweed (they do work to remove this all day but it just doesn't leave much beach). - Spa was not a winner for us, the therapists were good but the vibe was not what you would expect at a resort like this - we did not enjoy our experience there. - We went to Spoon for breakfast most days because it was easy - buffet style - but was super hard to get a cup of coffee. They should really consider a self-serve coffee bar. We would literally be almost done with breakfast by the time we could get coffee. - Unless you are a member, your room fridge is basically just stocked with a few cans of soda, a few waters and a few beers with a single snack bag of chips each day. There is coffee and tea too. Other resorts we've stayed at have tailored this a bit to the guests preferences - not here. - Here is the big key, they want you to be a member. They will invite you to come hear about membership and offer you 'discounts' to do this which may sound very attractive. In my opinion, unless you are really interested in membership ($25k plus upfront investment - goes up to about $180k USD investment) - don't bite - it will be a minimum of 1 hour and more like 2 hours of slow walk through of why you should consider, some very funny math, and a hard sell cloaked as a soft sell. I get it that this is their job and if you plan to be in Mexico a couple times a year for the next 20-25 years this could be a great deal but we wish we hadn't done it. We believe we could have negotiated the same discounts on our own without missing out on two hours of vacation time. - The security made us uncomfortable, there were men in a crows nest on the beach and walking the perimeter in kevlar vests carrying M16s. I'm sure they are there to make us comfortable but it had the opposite effect. My husband found articles on Twitter indicating a gun battle had taken place in the fall of 2021 on the beach off the resort causing a lockdown situation for the resort and he believes that's why the stronger military-feeling security is present. We never got comfortable with this during our visit. Tips for your visit - Bring a lot of cash and small bills to tip - tips were strongly encouraged for absolutely everything during our visit. Dinner, drinks, towels, wellbeing activities, etc. I'm not a cash person and we booked all inclusive to avoid having to carry money around, this is not that kind of al inclusive - bring tip money! - Bring lots of sunblock, if you have to buy onsite it is about $35 USD per normal size bottle to buy - If you are a wine enthusiast pay extra for the wine because the house wine is not good (f you aren't picky it could be fine but was not anything I would serve at home). - Kayaks can be found at the beach shack, it's $5 USD per person for the week to rent (cash only). - Most restaurants onsite are closed 5-5:30pm (really close for serving more like 4:30pm) - They host a bazaar of sorts a couple of nights a week where local vendors and artisans set up kiosks and sell things like silver jewelry, statues, carved lights, dresses, cover ups, braid hair, quartz statuettes, ceramics, paintings, etc. - you can negotiate pricing with them and they are all super nice.

You’ll pool at Azul

Tour26197820439 (Toronto, Canada) on Dec 03, 2022

Went with a friend for a relaxing getaway. Beautiful resort, very clean. We stayed mostly in the pool during the day. The beach isn’t anything to write home about. The water is murky and full of seaweed, maybe swim in it once for the experience lol it took me half an hour to get all the gunk out of my hair. Definitely not a big party spot, so if you’re looking for singles on your trip, I would suggest going somewhere else. There’s one party bar open at night until 1am. The food was good, lots of restaurants to choose from. We traveled off season, so the resort wasn’t too busy. We didn’t need to make any reservations, which was nice. Staff are lovely, special shout out to Bettyna, bartender at the adults only swim up bar. She is hilarious and made our trip that much more memorable.
