The Catalonia Riviera Maya is located in the exclusive area of Puerto Aventuras. This all-inclusive resort is close to the Puerto Adventuras Marina, Dolphin Discovery, golf course and restaurants as well as within close proximity to the main Mayan attractions and Playa del Carmen.

I will begin with the positives…our room was cleaned well daily. We tried all ala carte restaurants and were pleased with the experience each time. The online booking system is a bit of a hassle, but we did have some luck going right to the restaurant and asking for a reservation. If you are a Privileged guest you have access to BLoved restaurant for all meals and it is nice. Staff are great there. The large buffet was also good, lots of options. Every restaurant asked about allergies; we don’t have any but comforting to know they are mindful of these things. Lots of entertainment and pool games, etc. Pools are clean. The beaches are “meh”. The spa is nice and I had the BEST massage with Margarita. She was wonderful. 10/10. The little gated village the resort is in is safe, and the short walk to the marina is worth it, where there are fun little restaurants and bars. We had the best margaritas and chips and guac. Lots of free wifi. Now for the less than positive…We were not placed in the accommodation we booked. Our first room was completely unacceptable and outdated and provided a “tropical view” of a stone wall. We were moved after several calls and trips to the front desk, and the 2nd room was an improvement, but it was not a privileged deluxe suite (what we booked) and they would not accommodate a second move. Instead, we looked off our balcony at the privilege buildings we were supposed to be in. There is no alcohol served anywhere before 11am, so no mimosas with breakfast. The bars all don’t serve the same drinks, and some of the bartenders are more accommodating than others. The sports bar in the other side of the resort wasn’t bad and Carmen, the bartender there was good. Otherwise, service was fair but not outstanding. We are generous tippers but in some cases if you didn’t wave the tip before you asked for it, forget it. We found Cesar at the privilege bar to be rude and inappropriate, and knew enough Spanish to understand he was making fun of us. The lobby bar staff were good. Swim up bar guys as well. Getting bottles of water at the resort is a huge hassle. They have heavy glass bottles only and they want to give you 2 or 3 at a time. Bring a reusable water bottle with you to this resort! Again, I am all about tipping but tipping just to get extra bottled water is a bit of a stretch. I get the push to be environmentally conscious but they need to come up with a more customer friendly plan! I don’t know how these water bottles are cleaned, the lids aren’t sealed on ‘fresh’ bottles, and we saw staff drinking directly from them. We also had more than one experience where we received a beverage in a glass with someone else’s lipstick on it. They “rinse” cups out in the bar sink. There is no dishwasher at any bar. Overall, we had a good time, but that was because of the company not the resort. I wouldn’t recommend it, and will return to Huatulco next year, as in years past.

This is not a 4 star. My idea of a 4 star does not include having to throw your used toilet paper into the garbage can in the bathroom. That is ridiculous. We were staying in one of the “upgraded” premium rooms. Absolute junk. There’s only one buffet. The other is under construction but that isn’t mentioned anywhere. You have to make plans early in the morning if you want to eat at one of the ala carts restaurants before 9 pm. One of the reviews mentioned they had a shuttle. They don’t. There’s a lot of walking if you are in an upgraded area to even get to a restaurant or pool. That in itself is crazy We’ve been to Mexico over 30 times and have never run into this; you’d think we were in Sousa. In the Dominican as this is the only place we have had to deposit toilet paper in the garbage. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend anyone to stay here.
