Overview

Just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula sits Holbox Island, an unspoiled paradise that’s home to beautiful beaches, bioluminescent bays and sleepy fishing villages. Holbox is an island lost in time with untold beauty, still engrossed in rich culture and history. After arriving into Cancun Airport you will take a shuttle for roughly 2 hours followed by a ferry for roughly 20 mins to get to your hotel. Think of a small, unspoiled island paradise dotted with gently swaying palms, where crystal-clear turquoise waters kiss white-sand shores and golden afternoons seem to go on forever.

Beware the mosquito plague

WK65 (Washington DC, District of Columbia) on Sep 09, 2023

A group of us stayed two nights excited to see whale sharks. The hotel is beautiful and tastefully decorated. Cons: The hotel is far from the port and most taxis refused to go to that part of the island after the rain due to flooding . Maybe this was the reason why only few rooms were booked in the entire hotel. Also only one restaurant was open and no spa service because it’s low season from we were told. The room rates didn’t seem like low season prices. The worst was the mosquito problem. The hotel is situated on the mangroves near the beach, and after the rain, there are big pools of standing water- no drainage at all- made the mosquito situation unbearable. Even after bathing in bug spray, biblical plague of mosquitoes made it impossible to enjoy any part of the hotel outside our rooms. Each of us had over 100 mosquito bites everywhere and dead mosquitoes were on tables and chairs. I’ve visited the Amazon and other tropical places, but never experienced anything like it. We ended up eating together in our room. With our friends. The hotel doesn’t have enclosed dining or lounge areas. At almost $300 per night, I also expected better service and attention to detail for guest comfort. The room did not have a coffeemaker, glasses for drinks, soap and shower gel dispensers were empty which didn’t get refilled, no second roll of TP, and only 2 bottles of water first day. No additional water nor a place to buy any. When we asked for more water bottles, the hotel staff became mad at us. My key card did not work the entire stay, even after getting it reactivated, so had to use my husband’s. Pro: Despite the issues, the restaurant staff tried very hard to make our experience pleasant. They ran big fans and stoked fires for smoke to ward off mosquitoes, although this didn’t help much. I feel for the staff who have to deal with the heat and unrelenting mosquitoes. The food was pretty good and Jose our server was particularly helpful. The rooms were spacious and beautiful, and our room had a beautiful view of the beach and sea. It was a shame that we couldn’t enjoy the hotel outside of our room.

Love this Place

421wandab (Houston, Texas) on Jul 31, 2023

I loved this property because it is small, quiet, peaceful, beautiful, surrounded by nature, has amazing sunsets, steps away from one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen (I have high standards for beaches), close to the bioluminescent bay. However, the staff sets them apart. At the restaurant Jorge, Luis, Jose, and Ezli are amazing. Rene, the bartender is second to none. At the front desk Roberto and Manuel make you feel like family. These people work with love and dedication. Stay away if you cannot deal with mosquitoes, flies, sun, heat and humidity. It’s an island. The morning walks on the beach are something I will not forget. Most of the time we did not have hot water to shower but don’t forget this is a small island with limited resources (and it was 95 degrees outside). It was a great experience. I would go back in a heartbeat.
