Great vibe, wonderful resort

Jared B (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) on Jun 29, 2022

We were looking for a place we could go just to relax, and this was the perfect place. We had previously stayed at a Secrets, and wanted to try another brand in the same resort family. We arrived mid morning and were greeted at the airport and driven to the resort. Check in was pretty quick, and we had lunch while we waited on our room. The room was spacious, with a large bathtub and balcony with a double lounger. The food was excellent, and I appreciated how they tried to incorporate as much local cuisine as possible. There are iguanas everywhere, and a few peacocks too. Very relaxed vibe, service was excellent and there was always room at the pool. The only drawback was the beach, due to the seaweed, but that isn’t their fault and they spend all day everyday hauling it off. 5/5 would definitely go back.

Perfect for Quiet Relaxation

morevacationdayspls (Falls Church, Virginia) on Jun 27, 2022

My husband and I were in need of a quiet, stress-free vacation to just relax and unwind. Our 5-day stay at the Zoetry Paraiso de la Bonita Riviera Maya was the perfect choice and exceeded our expectations! If your priorities are an adults-focused getaway in a beautiful, peaceful setting with great service, delicious food, and boutique charm, do not hesitate to make a reservation here. We were a little concerned after reading some of the negative Tripadvisor reviews, but took a leap of faith and booked given the positive themes matched our priorities. Here are some more details organized by the 'pros' and 'cons' trends from other traveler reviews, and what we actually experienced during our stay. Hope this is helpful. We stayed in the main section of the resort (not Impressions) so we can't speak to the facilities or services on the Impressions side. 'PROS' Trends in Reviews: - Excellent Food: TRUE TRUE TRUE. Everything we ate was delicious to superb - well beyond expectations for an all-inclusive. We especially enjoyed dinner at El Chiringuito (outdoor grill), La Canoa, and the extensive breakfast options at Kaax. My husband does not eat meat and he had several outstanding options at every meal. The entire food and beverage team deserves a ton of credit. The quality of the food was a definite a highlight of our stay. - Beautiful Clean Rooms with a View: TRUE. The suite was spacious and beautiful. Spotless upon arrival and cleaned well each day. We loved having the separate living room area. The bathroom was huge with both a tub and shower as well as a bidet. There are plenty of drawers/closets for storage, robes and slippers and even umbrellas provided. Unlike a few other reviews, we did not have any trouble with hot water. The one issue we experienced (loose handle causing water to run in the shower) was fixed promptly. Yes, the rooms are a bit older so some of the wood and stone decor and furniture may show some wear (as critiqued in other reviews) but it's charming and well-kept overall. The ocean view and breeze from the terrace was amazing. (See Room Tips). - Friendly Staff: TRUE. We were very impressed by the consistent level of service. Everyone we encountered from restaurant hosts and servers to the front desk staff to housekeeping and room service treated us warmly and went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. They even humored us when we practiced our Spanish :) - Good Location: TRUE. The resort has a beautiful, quiet location. It is only a ~20-minute drive from the Cancun airport which means you can minimize travel time and get right to relaxing. We arranged private transfers through the hotel concierge which worked well. - Enjoyable Activities: TRUE. There are 5-6 wellness and entertainment activities each day. We enjoyed the water exercise class, tequila tasting, and Spanish lesson. Yoga on the pier / park with a view of the ocean was a particular highlight. Some reviewers have noted the activities as minimal or boring, but for us it was perfect - just enough to have the option of a few things to do, but not so much that you end up running from activity to activity and never unwinding. If you do get bored on site, there is a concierge who we observed setting guests up with off-resort excursions. As for entertainment, there was a roaming guitar duo at dinner several nights (piped in music otherwise), a piano night in the lounge one evening, and live music during a poolside cocktail party one afternoon, so the resort may be responding to previous feedback about it being too quiet especially during dinner. 'CONS' Trends in Reviews: - Beach isn't very nice thanks to the seaweed: TRUE. If your priority is lying on a white sand beach and swimming in crystal blue water, then you will be disappointed in the beach situation here. They do their best to clear the seaweed from the beach. On a few days of our stay it was clear enough for lounge chairs to be set up on the sand but not every day. We spotted a few folks swimming in the water but not many, and it wasn't appealing to us. We were happy with having an amazing *view* of the ocean from the pool or terrace and not using the beach, but true beach bums will need to consider this. - The Peacocks/Birds/Tractors are Noisy: MOSTLY TRUE. First, the birds. I had not heard a peacock before but now I will never forget the sound :). We did get woken up once or twice at night, and startled a few times during the day. For us, the novelty of having the wildlife on property added to the experience and outweighed the inconvenience of the noise. If you will be highly annoyed by their loud calls, it's something to think about and/or pack a pair of earplugs. We did not find the tractor clearing seaweed from the beach particularly loud and could not really hear it over the surf and wind. The Impressions rooms seemed a little closer to the beach so perhaps it's more of an issue there. - Slow / Spotty Service in Restaurants and Room Service: MOSTLY FALSE. Sure, there were a few service hiccups like a server taking a while to ask about refilling a drink or taking a dessert order, or small plates and entrees coming out at the same time, but nothing to offset the overall level of service. We just tried to be patient and enjoy our view of the palm trees and ocean in the meantime :). We ordered room service several times during our stay, and our order always arrived correct. Our requests for the mini-bar were fulfilled the first day. Yes, it does take a while for room service to get delivered (but they do give a pretty accurate time estimate when you call) so if you need that morning cup of coffee fast, you are better off going down to the restaurant if they are open. - It's Difficult to get a Chair at the Pool: TRUE. On days when the resort seemed busy, the pool chairs were filled (by books and towels if not bodies) by about 9 or 10 in the morning. Since we don't love direct sun anyway, our solution was to enjoy our shaded terrace during the day, then head to the pool around 3 or 4 in the afternoon when it's still plenty warm and sunny for swimming and the crowd was starting to thin out. If you love a full day at the pool and the mid-day sun, then yes, you'll have to get out early to claim a spot or be frustrated. - Difficult to get Dining/Activities Info on Resort App: TRUE, BUT... The resort has an app where you can see which restaurants are open, menus, and the wellness / entertainment activities for the day on your phone. It's true that information was slow to be updated (e.g. restaurant options/menus posting right before dinner time, activities for the day not posting until that same morning.). At first, I found this pretty annoying as I like to plan things in advance. However, I warmed to playing things more by ear, just deciding what to do in the moment and not over-scheduling. The same is true for the restaurants - other resorts take reservations for dinner. Here, there are no reservations and it's even unclear which of the three restaurants will be open until that evening. You just kind of show up and decide where to eat based on the menus and wait time. It seems to work well and we never waited more than 20 minutes to be seated for dinner. In the end, I think the 'just in time' approach helped us relax and not over-think and over-plan. I will say that I did not love using the phone app - I like going screen-free on vacation, so having to have my phone on me took away from relaxation. Other Comments: Mobility / Accessibility: For those with mobility issues, the main areas of the resort are pretty accessible, with small ramps adjacent to steps. There is a thick, sturdy railing on one side only of the stairs to 2nd and 3 level guest rooms. There is a small threshold to step over to get into the shower; wearing shower shoes helped on the tile. The pool is zero-entry with metal railings near steps, but I still found it helpful to have an arm to hang onto when getting in and out. Covid: At our time of stay, the resort offered on-site testing for $35/per person. The process wasn't clear when we arranged this, so we we so pleased that it was all done right on site with immediate results and a print-out for the airline provided (though this may no longer be necessary). Just another example of the thoughtful service and how the resort made the whole stay so easy. All staff were conscientious about wearing masks (though I felt bad that basically none of the guests were). Pro Tips: - Either wear or bring an easy change of clothes of pool-side ready attire, sunscreen, hat, etc. so you can enjoy the resort while waiting for your room to be ready on the first day. We roasted :) - Take advantage of the included spa intro service and try the saltwater pool at the spa - If there is a restaurant you want to try for dinner and it's open that evening, don't wait, because you don't know in advance which restaurants will be open/closed on future nights
