Review of Grand Beacon

Jim P on Dec 07, 2024

I would like to begin by stating that the front desk staff, concierge and Post Room staff are most accommodating and very friendly. The housekeeping staff keep the rooms clean and tidy. I had drinks, one meal and Afternoon Tea in the Post Room. All were lovely experiences. After a night out dinning, we stopped by the Post Room. The bar manager made his espresso martini for us. It's delicious. Cointreau is a nice twist. The problems with the Beacon Grand are within the rooms. I know that rooms in historic hotels tend to be small. They are at the Beacon as well. But the toilet in our first room was crammed against the wall. One had to sit sideways. It was most uncomfortable. I spoke with the manager. She graciously upgraded us to a larger room on the 19th floor. We could sit normally on the toilet. However, it was still so small and round. It is extremely uncomfortable as a male. I can only imagine it would be for all males. I've not seen toilets like this in years. We went to the Starlite lounge Sunday evening. Friday and Saturday nights were extremely loud and much more of a party atmosphere. We arrived Sunday evening during sunset. The views are breathtaking....absolutely stunning. The lounge itself is gorgeous. Alice Crumeyrolle did a fantastic job. This is truly one of the most beautiful lounges I've visited. However, the service was very poor and the drinks are ridiculously small. I've never seen cocktails so small. I asked and they are all like that. We have several very upscale sky lounges in Boston, all of which serve normal sized drinks. My advice is to stop by, sip very slowly on a cocktail and take in the views. Again, sunset is breathtaking. After that, go down to the Post Room. The staff are friendly, provide wonderful service and the cocktails are normally sized. Last, we were on the 19th floor. The Starlite is on the 21st floor. We heard the thud of the base from the lounge music on Saturday night. We did not hear it on Friday night. Volume is an issue. Our room was close to the elevators. The music from the lounge is loud in the elevators. I would not chose to stay at the Beacon Grand again solely because of the bathroom situation. As a male, it is that uncomfortable. Again, the staff mentioned in the first paragraph were wonderful. Afternoon Tea at the Post Room is fun. The room itself was nice. The Starlite lounge is beautiful, regardless of the service. But as a guest, I want to be able to use the bathroom comfortably. It's that simple.

Avoid the Beacon Grand at all Costs

davidjrm2016 (Chicago, Illinois) on Dec 05, 2024

In the morning after our first night at the hotel (out of three), there was no hot water in the shower. After we returned from dinner on our last (third) night, there was water leaking down through the light fixture into our toilet. It took five minutes for the front desk to answer our call seeking assistance and then, they called back and said that they were sending a bellman so we could switch rooms. They tried to move us from a junior king suite to a tiny two double-bed room that was about as big as a closet—which was unacceptable. Then they moved us to a larger room with a king bed that was smaller than our original room—but the bed was so soft it would have been impossible to sleep in. We left for the airport, where we spent the night. We were not charged for our stay, but that was small comfort for having to spend the night in the SFO terminal. And, to make matters worse, throughout our stay the striking employees of two nearby hotels were yelling in loudspeakers and banging drums from 8 in the morning until 10 at night—which served as background noise throughout our stay. Needless to say, we won’t be going back and recommend that anyone looking for a hotel near Union Square steer clear of the Beacon Grand.

Good location, clean and modern.

Kitty_luxe (London, United Kingdom) on Dec 04, 2024

It was fine, clean and modernish. The location is great, the service is not so great, the check in staff are really quick and don’t give you much info about the hotel. You feel safe, except when the fire alarm goes off at 11pm and you don’t know what to do, maybe burn in your room? It didn’t sound like an alarm so most people stayed put and then 15mins later they said it was ok to re- enter the building- no one did any checks etc, so I don’t know how safe it really is if there was an incident. You get an Illys coffee machine in the room, can get filtered water, the shower leaks onto the floor but we couldn’t be bothered to complain as more things in life to worry about. Room was cleaned well daily. It’s just a functional place. We used the bar a few evenings with family and it was nice and comfortable, the cocktails weren’t well made so we switched to wine but the staff are friendly and it’s a nice setting. The singer had too powerful a voice for such a tiny venue but was very good just too loud. Location wise you can get into Union Square and the cable cars within minutes. There is a great Starbucks on the corner and you can easily get to Powell Station or a taxi from outside.

Give Alejandro a raise!

698reids on Dec 03, 2024

Alejandro is amazing! Such amazing hospitality and I wish every hotel had an Alejandro. I had an issue and not only was he willing to help but he went above and beyond to help make my stay great. The hotel overall was very beautiful and the bar area is comfortable and cozy as well.

Unforgettable, Romantic Proposal

drnicolerobins (Calgary, Canada) on Dec 01, 2024

We cannot express enough gratitude for the incredible hospitality and exceptional service we received at The Beacon Grand, San Francisco. From the moment we arrived, Leif and the staff went above and beyond to make Kaetyn's proposal adventure a truly magical and unforgettable experience. A very special thank you to Leif for linking all of the parts of the proposal together perfectly, without a hitch! Every detail was handled with care and thoughtfulness. The team wasn’t just professional—they were genuinely invested in our love story, making sure every moment of our three-day stay was meaningful and memorable. Their kindness and dedication exceeded all our expectations, and we are forever grateful for the role they played in such a significant chapter of our lives. We wholeheartedly recommend The Beacon Grand to anyone seeking a truly special, stress-free, and unforgettable experience. Not to mention the stunning architecture and interior design! (Also, shout out to Julia Goldberg Photography for capturing our SF proposal)
