Nice & quiet place, friendly staff, food & wine options requiring improvement

Although I had a spacious room with 2 double beds, a desk and small living room area with a balcony, I was not a fan of the food, as many Canadians commented. I would rather be in a small space with fresh food & red wine. Get the omelette or meat they are frying on the spot. The workers are very friendly and the barristers were the best. One day, you can get mojitos, another day piña colada. You can fill up a water bottle with red wine at the lobby around noon for lunch & supper, if not available at the dining lounge. Nice looking Latin style buildings with well kept vegetation around. Farther than other hotels. You can take the 2-floor bus, which is cheaper than taxis, walk to town or rent a bicycle ('Varadero Cycles' new project, FB). Quiet and safe town. Sit and watch cars from the '40s & '50s go by, try a coco taxi or horse carriage. In front of a golf course, if you like golfing. The beach is behind the pool, very close and beautiful. If you love dancing, like I do, Los cactus is kind of quiet, a lot of elderly people. Go to Club Tropical for more salsa & reggaeton.

Brief review. I feel like I'm definitely part of the minority here, but I did not enjoy my stay. I tried to be positive and make the most of this vacation but it was a struggle. I arrived at 11 p.m. and the room was full of mosquitos. It was discovered in the morning that the bathroom window did not close completely allowing bugs entry into the room all night. The musty smell was unreal....even SEVERAL sprays of Febreeze didn't do it...not even close. After a very unpleasant encounter with reception, I was given another room. It was better. The front desk staff, a couple of them I sincerely believe hate their job and take it out on tourists. I like to think that I approached them in a respectful manner but was not treated that way in return. There were several staff that were very kind, and some that were not. Food.....I know it's Cuba, expectations were low, but seriously, this was bad! I do have a sensitive digestive system so I can be fussy to please, so pretty much ate the same things every single day...I actually lost weight on this trip. Due to my digestive issues, I cannot drink alcohol. No diet pop, actually the only pop was Fanta (orange)....I drank water all week. Beach Grill....didn't even try, I don't know how safe the food storage was in the heat. Beach is beautiful. Just not a fan of this place, and have no plans to return.
