A remote and quiet resort
Tim C (Vancouver Island, Canada) on Nov 30, 2024
I have been to Cuba more than 10 times and stayed at a few different resorts in varadero. I was looking for a quiet vacation and found this resort fit the bill. The reviews I read before praised the staff to the point I thought the staff wrote the reviews but I would agree the staff were excellent. Throughout the day there were many activities including Spanish lessons which Jordi made fun. There is a daily hike alternating between a steep climb up the hill and a leisurely walk around it. Lots of other activities throughout the day. My room was excellent for the most part. I had a issue with my safe and it was dealt with quickly. My maid was excellent. I did upgrade to diamond club now called premium for 15 us a day. Given the price it was worth it but don't expect luxury services. The plugs in my room were all 220 and narrower than my devices could use. The gift shop sells adapters for 10 dollars. I only turned on the TV once and there was no signal and others said there were no English channels. Cuba has always experienced shortages but there was always lots of food. I never saw so many condiments in a Cuban resort. Perhaps there was a lack of variety day to day but that is often the case in Cuba. I enjoyed the a la cart restaurants and the use of the a la cart for breakfast and dinner as part of my upgrade. I liked the beach a lot. There was sufficient shade if so desired. The main attraction is the coral reef with many repeat visitors snorkeling daily. The weather was windy and there were jellyfish around causing almost everyday to have a red flag which most people ignored. The beach in varadero is sandier and bigger but I found it fine with beach shoes. The pool area has limited shade and most days it was reserved via the towel game. Generally it was clean and well maintained. The sunwing/WestJet rep was around allot and very helpful. The diamond club reps were always asking if things were good. The servers did come to your seat and ask if you need a drink. There was not a lot of staff doing this but the ones that did worked hard. Talking to other travelers who did some independent travel noted power issues while busing around Cuba but the resort has power 100% of the time. A couple times the generators might have kicked in briefly. A couple who spent a month here including during the hurricanes said the only interruption they had was for 3 hours while they waited for more diesel. Overall my experience was very good. Based on a Cuban rating and allowances for the difficulties Cuba is facing I will say 5 stars but if you are someone who dwells on little things perhaps Cuba is not the destination for you.
