Family Vacation & Honest Review
Tim P on Mar 16, 2024
Just returned from a 10 day family vacation and wanted to provide an honest review. We went into this with reasonable expectations given the challenges that are currently in place in Cuba, and would recommend that anyone else travelling here do the same. The beach and ocean are absolutely amazing! Soft white sand and clear blue water. Stunning! Most of the staff were friendly and helpful and were very appreciative when receiving tips etc. Food is average, with either shortages of, or non-existent items, as one would expect. We did not have a drop of hot water in our room the entire time. We chose this resort for 2 main reasons…the beach / ocean and…because of what we read about Miguel…the resident Tennis Professional there. He is not only a great partner to play / hit with…but a sincerely good person who is gracious and kind. I wish I could have played tennis with him every single day and will not forget our hits with the music playing on his speaker in the background! If you are a high level tennis player and want to have some good hits…go see him. If you are a beginner or intermediate player and want to hit or take lessons…go see him! You won’t be sorry!! The resort is lucky to have him! Muchas gracias Miguel!! Special shout outs to George in the animation / activities department…who is an amazing guy and keeps the beach hopping, …and to Niurka, our chambermaid…for taking care of us and for being so sweet!! All in all we enjoyed our vacation…but there are definite challenges that are difficult to ignore. Cheers! Tim and family.
Great beach, overall friendly staffs but poor facilities and really inconsistent service level
Frank Yuan Fan O (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) on Mar 15, 2024
Planned the trip for 2 families and total of 10 people for our trip to Cuba. I have been to Cuba right before COVID and I have to say that I thought I prepared for everything but still got caught off guard by a few details. First about the pros of the resort, the beach looks amazing, I stay in the Grand Memories last time, Paradisus by far is a lot more modern and the beach is a lot bigger and better. I think it is due to the size of beach front this resort has ( it also one of the cons) . It does give variety of environment to explore. The West side of the beach ( far end from lobby ) is a lot flatter and a lot more sandy than the side where the "The reserve" part of the beach is. The side with the reserve has section of the beach cover with rocks and seaweed so walking without a proper water shoe will almost guarantee you get cut by those sharp rocks. Also I saw sting ray near the side of the edge of the area which means bare foot step onto lots unknown and potentially hazardous things. The beauty of this area is giving you lots to snorkeling. I saw sting ray, sea urchins , lots different grouper fish, tangs , smaller bennies and even some interesting sea creatures that people might be scared of . ( Large size fire worm ) This means you can really snorkel without the need to go all the way out to the rough open water and being extremely shallow is perfect for kids that just start learning snorkeling. Now talk about the cons( the BAD!). I am sure this happen everywhere in Varadero but according to local guides, it is more true to the military controlled resorts. Food and drinks are extremely limited. I expect the food to be blend in taste but never expect to be extreme limited in option. For drink, the only soda option is 7up , orange juice always run out and Pina colada only available at the pool bar where they close early and always run out before noon. Compare to before COVID, this a far cry worse than before. Pina colada always refillable and the staff willing to fill your refillable cup with it. Now even water is a fight to get them give you more than a small cup. I overheard a group of 48 people complaining about no bar or servers willing to give them bottle of water so all of them to force to drink beer as normal liquid in take but their groups are mainly underage grads so it was really not an ideal situation. For my own group we were able to get some water from our maid but even that is inconsistent. Sometimes you get two small bottles and sometimes u get a large bottle. Sometimes you get nothing but two cans of beer. The next part is the hot water issue. Some folks said no hot water because it is hot and it is their tradition to just run cold water for shower. However, I don't buy that argument because we had ,5 rooms, the one room at building 13 actually got extremely hot water. But all other 4 rooms, building 12 and 31 all got no hot water. For the adults of my group mainly ok but for the little one in my group, cold water shower was a big challenge. Staff are all friendly as expected but I almost felt like they over worked. Staff in the main buffet always take a long time to get around serving people. ( Yes I tip ahead always so this is not because we didn't tip) . Sometimes they will entirely forgot my group ordered drink. I can tell the effort is there but they simply can't handle the amount of people coming into the restaurant. Sit down meals are ok but don't expect much different from one to another, we booked the Italian , Cuban and international. We found international is the best. I think overall , I would still go ba k to the same hotel but only if I know Cuban government got their act together and solve the economy problem. It is extremely heart broken when we saw the residence getting only 2 hours electricity right outside of the resort area every day. I do want to give my kudo to the front desk , they are willing to resolve problems and willing to work with you really quickly. I had a leak in one of our rooms from upstairs bathroom, they were able to get us a different room the very next day without any hesitation.
