Beautiful, great for kids, no good food options (during pandemic)

I just spent a week at the Hilton Waikoloa with my wife and kids. The resort is gorgeously landscaped, huge and spread out. The swimming pools are huge, beautiful and fantastic for kids. The lagoon offers a great swimming alternative, with water bikes for rent. The kids also liked seeing the dolphins (on the property.) Note *there is no beach* at the resort, but the nearest beach is a 7 minute Uber ride. None of the pool chairs have shade umbrellas (which is shocking.) If you need shade, prepare to rent a cabana for the day. There is no room service (again due to pandemic,) so if you want fresh towels or coffee you gotta hunt it down. We just went in April (pandemic,) so only one restaurant was open for the entire resort. It's an "Italian" restaurant, and honestly the food was just not that good. I've been to Italy multiple times- the food is to die for. But the Hilton's Italian restaurant was a below average approximation, even by "Americanized" standards. Also, the menu consisted of only pasta and pizza. (How many nights in a row can you eat pasta??) There is also one lunch grill open, but again the menu options were strikingly limited. In short, food became a major problem. We left the resort daily looking for other options (taxi, Uber.) There's one restaurant nearby on the beach (it's a 2 hour wait to get a table,) otherwise you're looking at the food court in the nearby mall. The challenge of eating was the biggest disappointment of our vacation. We paid for a luau night with buffet, but again the buffet was pretty bad and very limited. You are sitting in a large concrete area with tables, and subjected to 2 hours of amplified Hawaiian music from a stage- I would not recommend the luau. As a final note: This resort is so spread out that the architects installed a tram to help people get around. However the tram comes VERY infrequently, so you're better off just walking. I would not recommend this resort for anyone who's older and has knee problems, or disabled etc. In summary I think it's good for families and kids, but maybe not for romantic couples, and bring a TON of snack food for the kids to eat.

Our stay at this resort was amazing. We attended the Luau on resort as well & were thoroughly impressed. The pools at this resort was the highlight for my kids & the incredible lagoon right on property is an added bonus.

The rooms were clean and average this is as good as it gets, if you are not at the pool before 8.30 you have zero chance of getting a sun lounger, I was told by staff to just move towels if there was no personal belongings. If you are dreaming of an idyllic swim / snorkel in the lagoon with the turtles think again, they lease boats to any age, without an adult, so the chances are you’ll be hit by a kayak, paddle board or Pedlo are high you can’t relax at all. The dolphins space was so so sad, they are fighting and have very little room to move, they are so intelligent and are better than performing for us, see them and the whales in the wild. Food options are limited and long waits, almost $5 for a soda, we have travelled extensively and I can honestly say this was one of the worst places we’ve stayed at for the price and expectation.

Conviently located 25-30 mins away from Kona airport. There’s a black sand beach about 25 mins in the opposite direction from the hotel. The Hotel’s tram was very helpful. The breakfast was great. The pools were very nice. The dolphin sanctuary if very nice & educational. You even have the opportunity to swim w/ the dolphins. The dolphins at that hotel are in an environment that mimics their own natural habitat. Which made me feel a lot better. Overall it was an amazing stay. 10/10 recommend

After jumping through all the hoops to get to Hawaii, this property was welcomed enjoyment. Great location, great food. Nui has amazing food. Chicken parm is awesome. Freda upon arrival was great at the front desk.
