    Tiny room, false fire alarms

The room was small hard to store luggage and personal belongings, the bathroom even smaller. No coffee machine in room, no free water (4$). Noisy AC. First two nights, two fire alarms. Announcements could not be heard in room. Windows don’t open and do not keep out the noise from the street. The only positives: bed was good and cleaning staff very nice. Truly an old place, but old also like in not contemporary re equipment and service.

Compact-size room but very well furnished - bed super comfortable Breakfast a la carte (here I would have preferred smaller portions to be able to have some fruit and some pancakes ..both of them to be ordered too big BUT fantastic cappuccino)

We booked this hotel as part of a package with BA holidays. The hotel is situated in a superb location right in the heart of downtown SF with easy access to all parts of the city via public transport. The rooms are small but clean and perfectly adequate. The hotel is busy with a great vibe especially between 5 & 6 when wine and nibbles are served for free in the lobby. For fitness freaks there is a great little gym to workout in. Unfortunately photos on the hotel's website don't do the place justice. This is a great affordable place to stay for a visit to this stunning city

This property has a convenient location near union square and right on Powell St which gives you a view of the cable cars going up and down the street, an enjoyable sight while getting some fresh air in the front of the hotel. It is definitely old world and historic. I found the rooms comfortable, with a mini bar fridge, modern bathroom although very small. A real treat was the happy hour in the lobby from 5-6 pm every day, serving complimentary wine and some food. That was a hit with some music playing. The front reception was staffed by Kyle while I checked in, and hive him high marks for his attentiveness. There is a fitness center that has quite a few elliptical and treadmills and free doubles to use. The attached bistro to the hotel had great breakfast and although didn’t try for dinner due to our schedule, the food menu looked great. I gave it four stars due to the age of the hotel and some of the tight spaces, but again consider the historic ambience.

An enjoyable stay and a step back in time

This was the first hotel on our 6 week US trip and I have to say it was an historical treat. Yes the rooms are compact but we were only there to sleep. What I loved was the historic interior, the long and sometimes chequered history of the hotel (do some research) the staff were really lovely and helpful and the location was great being so central to everything we wanted to do. If you are looking to step back in time and are happy to overlook some less modern details in lieu of the historical detail then this is the hotel for you.
