Very good location, internal hotel problems

The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The location is very good, as you step out the door you are within walking distance to great shops and restaurants. Upon arrival the first thing we noticed was the room toilet had a malfunctioning flapper. I must say the bathroom was the smallest I had ever encountered in a hotel. The door passed the toilet by about 1 1/2 inches. No way could 2 people be in this bathroom at the same time. No one would ever steal their towels as they were thin and felt like sandpaper. No luxury towels here. One of the two elevators in the hotel was broken. For 2 days of our stay we were awakened to the sounds of drills and talking workmen working on the elevator. Not exactly the way you want to wake up. We had good meals in the restaurant. I would not choose to stay here again.

Beautiful Gem of Hotel Newly Remodeled is Treat for the Eyes

The Heathman Hotel was a wonderful surprise of architectural splendor. Every decorative detail was well-thought out. It was a treasure for the eyes. Next door is the Portland Symphony. Even though the sign's bright lights are big, the hotel rooms have black out blinds so that you can have a quiet sleep. The rooms were also beautifully decorated, clean and large. The study is filled with signed books from authors who have stayed there. Nearby the hotel is one of only rivers in the world which travel south to north (the other is the Nile in Egypt). A delightful stay.

I called last minute for a room and spoke with Andrew, I travel a lot and I was pleasantly surprised by the warm friendly staff, they made sure I had everything needed, even down to a night cap of Hot Chocolate from the onsite store and an Author signed book to read at bedtime in the amazing Library. The rooms were updated beautifully, well stocked with robes, coffee press and delicious in room coffee. Thank you Andrew for all your great suggestions on near by things to see and places to eat. I am coming back soon !

Really a fantastic experience at The Heathman Hotel. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. A great check-in experience where they shared all of the events (happy hour, etc.) that take place in the hotel. The room was fantastic and spacious. Very clean and ample space for an extended stay. The location is amazing! Would highly recommend a stay at The Heathman Hotel.

This hotel is okay but I would not recommend it. I feel I have stayed at better hotels in downtown Portland for a similar price. Pros - Good location in downtown Portland - Were able to check into our room early (probably just luck but it was very convenient!) - Across the street from a parking garage that has only $16 parking (all the hotels in this area seem to charge $40-$50 for parking so this is very convenient) - Courteous and helpful staff - Cute welcome beer idea Cons - Rundown: The building is old so I get that the rooms are small. However, there were a lot of things that just seemed rundown about the hotel. One of the elevators was broken the entire time we were there. The refrigerator in our room was kind of broken and hard to close. The bathroom door was a little warped and hard to close/lock. The bath towels were very rough feeling and unpleasant. - No soundproofing: I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a hotel that had this little soundproofing. I could hear people’s entire conversations and people singing. I’m not sure it was other rooms or just the hallway but it was pretty bad - Lots of hidden fees: The base room cost was $125 but there was an additional $80 in fees including a $30 resort fee. I think the idea of this kind of hotel having a resort fee is strange. I’m not sure what it even is supposed to cover - the library area (it was fine but not amazing to me) and the beer? I feel I have stayed at more expensive 4-star resorts in Hawaii that have full pool/beach access with $30 resort fees. A 64% increase in price due to fees seems rather steep I think I may have gotten this hotel for a lower price than normal given it was late December which was nice. However, this hotel felt rather disappointing given Trip Advisor says this hotel class is 4.5 stars and there are lots of high customer reviews.
