I wanted to take a minute to write about our experience at Tucan/Quetzal. We live right outside of Boston, we took a direct flight from Logan Airport. Going to Cancun it was a full flight with the middle seats blocked. On the return flight it was a full flight with no middle seats blocked. Logan airport: no lines, felt pretty safe. Cancun: arrival was smooth and quick. They had us fill out a form about covid but never collected. They have these temperature check machines but if you don’t pay attention you don’t even notice they are there. (I didn’t even see them until my daughter pointed out) Cancun airport return: complete madness (it could also be because it was a holiday) we returned on January 2nd. Resort: This was out first time staying at Tucan after hearing so many great things about this resort, we had to check it out. I’m so glad we did. The staff was amazing, the food was OK (we enjoy good quality food) so I wasn’t really impressed, I felt very safe. The workers wear masks and some even wear the visors. Resort occupancy was very busy there were a lot of people, if felt like everything was back to normal again. I asked staff and they stated it was only busy because it was New Years but after the first week of January it would be very quiet again. Room: we stayed in the Presidential suite, it was lovely. Very spacious, we really enjoying the jacuzzi outside and the outdoor space. We are a party of 6 (2 adults and kids are 19,14,14,9) the location of the room is perfect. Staff: They were very pleasant! It made our experience even better. Spa: Rayna is amazing! Her massage is the best. Ocean: water was cold at first but you get used to it. Ocean wasn’t calm and the waves were a bit high. Beach is beautiful! Pool: water was a bit cold Overall: We can’t wait to go back. We liked how Tucan is smaller than Paraíso complex. The kids got around by themselves, and we loved the wild life. If you are thinking about visiting I would say go. Even though it was very busy during our stay it was a great time. We really enjoyed.

Star Camp was great for my child

My 5 year old expressed interest in attending the Star Camp. She usually wants to stay with family while on vacation. I can honestly say she loved going everyday. She wanted to arrive when the camp opened at 10am and despite my efforts to pick her up early, she wouldn’t want to leave before 4:30. She was well taken care of by 2 adults at all times in a group of no more than 12 kids. She ate well, played in the beach and pool, explored the animals at the hotel, and completed crafts. I made sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and a hat for her. I am happy she enjoyed her vacati9n more because of the staff at Star Camp.

    A covid and environmental nightmare

I booked this resort mostly due to the reviews about its jungle. I'm a nature freak and have traveled the world photographing wildlife, but due to Covid travel restrictions and my family's desire to just kick back and relax, we chose this resort along with two others in the area. In terms of the "jungle", there isn't one. This is more of a manicured garden. Central Park has more wildlife than this place. The grounds are swept often, most likely to reduce habitat for things like snakes. However, this results in less food for many creatures, so for example bird diversity is extremely low. If you're looking for bird photography, this is most definitely not the place. What they do have a lot of are agoutis and howler monkeys. This is easily one of the best places to see agoutis, as they're relatively unafraid of people. There are also coatis, though they aren't as frequent as at some other places. What really bothered me was that the hotel encourages guests to feed the monkeys and coatis. This is extremely harmful. First, foods like fruit loops, cocoa crisps, and bread are very bad for them. Bananas are also horrible, as they're a Southeast Asian fruit and New World mammals can't digest them properly. Studies have shown they cause stillborn deaths in monkeys. You're also passing diseases back and forth (true even before Covid), and they're very susceptible to ours. Finally, this practice encourages increasingly aggressive behavior, which will eventually lead to the monkey being put down. I tried educating people I saw feeding, but the responses were extremely hostile. People seem to think the wildlife is solely there for their entertainment. When I think about the lack of signs or education at the resort, I think this may actually be true. This place is no better than the resorts in South Africa that let guests ride on the elephants. It's not about the wildlife but solely about guests and day passes. This disgusted me. In terms of Covid, I would rank this resort a 0. Sure, they did the right things on paper: tables were sanitized before breakfast, dinner, and lunch. Buffets didn't provide access to serving utensils: a server would provide what you wanted behind a screen. However, there are two hotels - Quetzal and Tucan. Both were opened to 70% capacity, but except for the buffet no services were available at the Tucan. Yup, that effectively meant that Quetzal was at 140% capacity. Add to that the fact that masks are not enforced in common areas, and most guests choose not to wear them, meant this is an extremely high risk resort. At other resorts where we felt at risk, we just used room service. However, due to same insane reason none was available. This forced us into the common areas. The combination of extreme negligence for its wildlife and poor Covid safety practices put this resort among the worst I've ever stayed at.

My husband and I Along with our 2 kids 14 & 3 stayed here November 28-Dec 5 2020. I have to say that given we were here during the pandemic this resort exceeded our expectations. Here is a breakdown of my review for this resort. COVID: staff is ALWAYS masked- inside or outside. They get tested every 14 days. Your Temperature is taken upon arrival and Hand sanitizer is everywhere. You need to mask in restaurants or stores and you can take it off once you sit down. We felt safer here than we do at home. ROOMS: we stayed in room 1010 oceanfront suite. It was great! Only steps from the beach & pool. Lots of room . My only complaint was that the beds were way too hard and the shower doesn’t have a door that closed so water gets everywhere. FOOD: well it really hard to review the food because of covid. Things are so different and I’m sure difficult for staff. It’s frustrating waiting to be served at the Buffett when there is not enough staff to accommodate and they are running to multiple stations. This was not enjoyable and waiting was frustrating. However, the food I had I enjoyed and the staff was always kind and helpful. The al la carte restaurants were good! Japanese was our favourite- Italian was not as great as I expected due to minimal options and there was a constant alarm going off. A very LOUD alarm, it’s hard to enjoy a nice dinner with that happening every 5 minutes. Snack bar by the pool is good! Burgers and fries , hot dogs. The inside one has much more options but it’s a drag putting on a mask from the pool so we mostly ate outside. POOL: pool is great! No complaints! Pool bar was fantastic! Great service and always ready to pour you drink. Ice cream stand was equally awesome! My youngest was there multiple times a day lol! BEACH: beautiful! Depending on the weather the water can be a bit rough and not as clear, our last day it was gorgeous! We walked all the way to playa del Carmen along the beach and it’s gorgeous ?? ENTERTAINMENT: my 3 year old was in love with a particular singer that preformed at the little Lounge , she danced with him and just adored him! The entertainment crew were awesome! Nightly shows were typical but there were 3 shows that I felt were above average. There was a haunted house through the jungle our first night which was super cool! I can’t say a whole lot of negative about this resort. We had a great time as a family and they went above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and safe. Thank you Iberostar for a wonderful holiday!

It’s a very nice hotel, the beach is very clean, same goes for the rooms, the workers here are really nice, pretty big pool, food is pretty good, the entertainment here is pretty good, there are lots of little animals here that are small and nice.
