    Read Carefully; Not a Good Experience

    This is perhaps the most difficult review I have written. The one star rating reflects many facets of our experience, but let me start with the good things. The location is great: wide, clean beach that for tens of meters remains shallow and safe. You can walk along it for miles. The staff is good, as long as this does not include management, which is where I think the problems begin. Indeed, from the beginning we were tainted by our having booked the hotel through bookit.com. Within minutes of arriving at the hotel that was patently very clear. Beginning with my wife not being able to receive mybarcelo credit for the stay, which, if an isolated incident, would be understandable. The next bubble to pop in our stay, which occurred a few minutes later, was finding out that we could not get free wifi, although every hotel affinity group we know offers that (Note: my wife and I typically spend about 120 days a year in hotels, about half in different hotels; we know a bit about affinity groups and hotels.). Again, the bookit.com issue was raised. Our room, note 229, was our next dreadful experience. We could not control the temperature and it was extremely cold. They sent people to check, but nothing happened. It’s still the first day and our next discovery was that there was no hot water in the shower! We complained about the room and asked to be changed to a different one- guess what – our bookit.com booking put us in a low category and we could not be given a different room. Fortunately, after the first night we managed to get blankets, but still no hot water in the evening. After the second night, they relented and gave us a new room that was much better, but how much effort should that take. It took my wife a huge amount and constantly lessened our experience. I seriously doubt we were the first to complain about these issues. As for other parts of the experience, we found the selection of beverages to be third rate. The house wine was unpalatable. On the one occasion when we did drink it, the white was poured over a bed of ice and the red also had ice added. After that, when we wanted wine we chose Mexican wines, which were priced well. Even that, they ran out of our favorite wine the second night we asked for it. The one star clincher occurred on the last night. By then, we had come to terms with third rate drinks, gotten a new room and even had free wifi (somehow the previously stated policy had changed in the wake of my wife’s admonitions). At dinner, we met a man who had come to the resort with his family for several years. He said he would never come back again. He thought the management had changed and the experience had been diminished. With that affirmation, this is clearly not a destination I would ever recommend.

    Great resort, great food, great service especially by Luis Robles. Very personable staff and everyone made us feel welcome. Only downside was the construction that is happening so the room was very noisy between 8am-6pm daily.

    Had great view room was clean,buffets were good lots of choice ,great staff,onsite doctor was very helpful,took care of my insurance otherwise it would if cost me $250 u.s..loved the different juices you could help youself too in the lobby

    From the minute we arrived to the minute we left we were completely taken care of. Special shoutout to Erik Cerna and Fernando Garcia at the pool. Extremely personable and knew exactly when we needed another drink before we even had to ask. On top of the amazing and friendly staff, the food was fantastic- there were so many options at the buffets and the restaurants provided insanely high quality meals. They are also very accommodating and there were zero issues with my vegetarian girlfriend finding food to eat. The hotel is beautiful and there is plenty to do without going far from the resort. I recommend checking out the parasailing and the Las Marietas tour. Whether you’re in your early twenties like us or further along in life you will be super happy with your stay. Highly recommend staying here

    This is the 8th time visiting the Puerto Vallarta facility. Our first vacation was about 20 years ago when my daughter was 4 years old. We liked it so much we invested as a First Club member. This year I combined two years of membership to take my daughter (now 25 years old) and her husband as well. We made our reservations last July. Knowing the property (or so I thought) I made very specific requests as to our rooms. These were made through the Occidental Vacation Club. On arrival I noted some significant changes in the resort, including construction on a whole new wing which I estimate will increase capacity by 30+/- percent. While some of the amenities we enjoyed years ago: an archery range, hammocks, the original stage, were gone, the upgrade were extraordinary. Our registration at the First Club was cordial and efficient. Our room requests were granted. All in all, it was one of the best weeks I have spent at this resort. I am very impressed that time has only improved the Occidental Nueva Vallarta facility.
