So-so stay, kids club was disapointing

M1171ZOkrisw on Feb 03, 2023

We stayed at this hotel for 14 days and picked it solely because we had two children under four and wanted a place that catered to kids. They offered a kids day program and we figured it would be full of fun and excitement. One the second day we made our way to the kids club and we noticed some younger children playing around the pool and sand area. This seemed odd as there was no supervision present. Entering the kids club shack we walked down a hallway to a room with very little light where one or two other kids were playing and spoke with the one staff how it worked. There were some toys and the kids seemed relatively excited to be there at first so we hesitantly checked them in and left for a coffee a short distance away. About an hour in, I decided to check in on the kids. When I walked by they were very visibly upset and wanted to leave. Understandably with younger kids but i could tell they were not having fun and I felt guilty for leaving them. As I waked closer I could see that our two year old daughter was standing in a puddle of her own pee and that ended our day at the kids club. The one bright spot here was that for the rest of the trip when our kids were getting to excited or acting up, we threaten to take them to kids club and they smartened right up. I actually did it again the other night while we were back at home and my four year old immediately started cleaning up his toys in fear we would send him back. The next day we decided to take the kids to the kids pool which was very disappointing. The pool was very dirty with many leaves in it. The alligator waterside was not working and there was not one single other person at the pool which I'm assuming was the reason the kids BBQ kitchen area was not open. They did put on a kids disco every night around 8:30 which our kids loved. The staff were very good and danced around with them singing songs and being silly. This was the highlight of their trip and they still talk about it. Finding the disco was a different story as often it was not in the same spot and the front desk staff were not very helpful pointing us to the sign for more info that only said "Kids Disco - 8:30". The food was so-so. Not the best not the worst. It did appear they were in the midst of an audit. On some dinner nights a man in a blue chefs coat was walking around making sure things were tip top. It was a delight to eat in the buffet on days like this. The food was always fresh, there were plenty of extra choices i.e. Fresh garlic for pasta and a Tomato Basil pesto sauce. On nights when the man in the blue coat was not there the food was in disarray. You could tell it was old, the kitchen staff didn't seem to care and I questioned some of the food preparation methods. Nothing is ever hot but i found taking things to the chefs who operate ovens, frying pans and grills you could get them to eat it up by leaving a tip. As I mentioned we stayed for 14 days and housekeeping staff did not change the sheets once. We actually brought a full extra suitcase of hygienic products as gifts to leave for them and although we had a swan or a boat made from the covers, we always had the same sheets. The Mattress's are fairly old and not comfortable but luckily we didn't plan on spending much time in the room. We were a family of four and they only ever left one water bottle for us each day. On two of the days they actually didn't leave anything and getting some water was incredibly difficult. The shining stars of the resort were the wait staff in the dining room. Morning breakfast we were always greeted with a warm smile where they asked question on the family and hoped we had an amazing day. It was a nice feeling and we could tell they genuinely cared. Another member of the team was the omelette guy (unfortunately I cant member his name) but he always had a smile and was very happy to meet and greet everyone as they walked in. Overall a so-so experience. To be honest we really expected more for the price we paid and we were very disappointed with the kids club. When the kids are not able to go and have fun the adults vacation is no longer a vacation.

Lovely holiday in beautiful hotel in sunny Varadero Cuba

nignatov (London, United Kingdom) on Jan 31, 2023

We have been in Meliá Peninsula at the end of January for a week. The hotel is on massive estate, there is 2 swimming pools (one is just for the kids) and has a beautiful beach. There are two 24/7 bars where we got our morning coffee and a evening rum cocktails. We find a lovely people who work on the pool bar, they was all nice and friendly. Especially Liana, who always does everything to make us feel welcome. If you go there with a high expectations, you will be disappointed. The five stars in Cuba are not a five stars, somewhere else. Bare in mind that they're under US embargo and that's make everything a lot harder for them. The food is not that great, with no many options to choose from, but there is always something to eat. Not even a fish and different fruits, which is quite strange for a tropical island... The room is quite decent size with a nice bathroom. They are a bit outdated and can be maintained better. But overall the hotel is nice, the people, the beach and the weather are cool, so we really enjoyed our Cuba holiday.
