Skip Sandals Antigua

We've stayed at a number of Sandals in the past. This experience at Sandals Antigua was the poorest. It's not just one event, but several events. First, we asked about tours and signed up for a excursion around the island. Fun times! The bill was $50 more than we were told when we signed up. When we asked, the tour desk stated that that was an error, but they would not refund the funds. Second, we called or visited the front desk for a few items we needed in the room (a 2nd wash cloths, more soap for bathing, refreshing the refrigurator with drinks). We were always told "oh yes, right away". Then nothing happened. A third example was with the restuarants. There is not information in the room defining which restaurants require reservations or when then open. We looked up when a restaurant openned via their website (which stated 6:30 pm). When we arrived at 6:29 pm...we were told it was an 45 minute wait as they openned at 6:00 pm. ??? Yes, Sandals Antigua has great beaches and lots of sun...the staff is very polite...but the service is lacking. At the price point they charge, little things should be taken care of. They are lacking. We'll not come back.
A really enjoyable week, would go again

IFirstly I can’t comment on value for money as my wife won a weeks stay at Sandals in a UK national competition. Our room was a Club walk out room. It was on the ground floor of the Mediterranean side leading out on to the truly gorgeous gardens. I cannot praise these gardens enough and their dedicated workers. The head gardener even does early morning tours , once or twice a week. I have to say contrary to some comments on here we found the staff both helpful and pleasant. I gather they were nearly all local . I also had no problems contacting the concierge on the internal phones. The rooms were clean, very few mosquitoes. Bedding changed daily. Tv channel selection was fine with ESPN 1&2 and at least one other sports channel. Plus I think NBC, ABC and CBS Florida. The room we were in was getting a bit tired, but that didn’t detract from the holiday. . Nice large bathroom. Well stocked Bar & mini-bar. Refreshed daily. The room outside furniture was again a little tired but perfectly usable. Air-con worked well. We had a couple of minor electrical issues which were sorted very quickly. The maintenance staff were lovely. Only 3 restaurants require booking. We managed to get slots. One was for 9pm, but we were told by the receptionist that if we spoke to the Maitre D , on the evening they might et us in early, and they did. The food was of a high standard. The wine was also very good. In fact no complaints at all on soft or alcoholic drinks, and some great cocktails The choices for lunch were a little disappointing, to us . On two days the Bayside restaurant had a buffet menu. This would have been nice everyday. To be fair a lot of folk had the pizza or used the pool side snack menu. In the evening we had no trouble getting into the non bookable restaurants. There was a bit of the wait at Barefoot as its quite small, but nothing major. Our favourite was the Bayside . They also never had a queue and the food was great. We also had breakfast there, great buffet. No queue. The drunken duck is pretty good for a late drink. We both and a number of guests we spoke to, wished more restaurants had the Evening dress code. It makes it more special We had no problems getting a lounger around the main pool, but did put our towels out on the way to breakfast. The butlers got the best loungers, by being v early !Generally very good atmosphere. There really aren’t many younger couples. Its certainly not an 18-30, except Honeymooners. Americans are louder than Brits, but they were pleasant. I really don’t understand the need for the load music, the guest profile now more like 40 and older and can live without it. Its hard to get a lounger on the beach unless you are up early, but wait until 3pm and lots start to become available. Trips via island routes, sandals in-house trip organisation were fine, at bit expensive. Recommend the sunset cruise. We paid for theses. Be wary of beach vendors. Airport transfers all good. Site very secure, but crime is low in Antigua anyway. The people are friendly and want to support tourism. We were disappointed that we didn't get approached with a tempting offer to come back as others did., possibly because we didn't actually pay! So in summing up. Its not perfect, its very good, Obviously things can go wrong. We very much enjoyed and would go back in flash to this or another sandals small island resort. Would recommend v highly..
