Staycation

378janellec on Jul 05, 2022

My husband and I stayed at the Grotto Bay for a staycation get away. We absolutely love Grotto Bay so much that we are booked again for September. The staff are very professional and always pleasant. I love that Grotto Bay is a resort, definitely perfect for a staycation/vacation as there is no need to leave the premises as everything is there. We explored a cave on the premises as well as the Natura Cave Spa is a must for a couples massage. The young man working around the pool are very helpful as all the staff are, I would definitely recommend Grotto Bay any day!

Good location but loud and rude front desk staff

905karenm (Richmond, Virginia) on Jul 01, 2022

Bermuda is beautiful and people there are amazing overall. The hotel is at the East end of the island - a quick walk up the sidewalk to the Swizzle Inn and a short drive to St. George's (go to Wahoos) and the Aquarium. The wait staff at the hotel are beyond the best! Liviu, Will and so many others were absolutely amazing. Wendell at the entrance is also amazing. My concerns are three fold: 1. The front desk needs a class on customer service. I have received a warmer welcome at the Hampton Inn. It's like they were annoyed we were there. I thought it was just a rude check in person but consistently during the week I found them to be intentionally unhelpful. Instead of providing information about the island and making suggestions - they literally withheld information just to be rude. "How long does it take to get to hamilton by bus?" - i asked. She said, "I don't know - it's public transportation." I said, 'Can you give me an idea?" she said, "I don't know it's hard to say." I said, "20 or 30 minutes?" She said, "about that." This was every single time I talked to them. My sister in law whose family travelled with us said the same thing about her check in. It left such a bad impression. We've been to so many other resorts where your arrival is warm and fun and inviting. This was more like "NEXT!" And all throughout the week. They were just rude. Never smiling. Always unfriendly. When i checked out the man was super rude and didn't say anything like "i hope you enjoyed your stay" or "thanks for staying" or even "have a nice flight home." Just- "here is your bill." I cannot express how unimpressive and rude and unfriendly and unhelpful the front desk staff is. 2. The poolside bar - there is a guy there named Wendell. He is SO SWEET and wonderful and nice/ Then there is a taller guy who doesn't wear a nametag. He is horrible and bullies Wendell and it's terrible to watch. The taller man is on edge you can tell and snaps and is super rude. EVen my 18 year old niece was very upset after an interaction with him. She asked him for water bottle. He said "we don't have water bottles." She said "I just saw you give one to that other person." HE said, "We have bottles of water - not water bottles." The way he snapped at Wendell over and over and tried to humiliate him was very tough to watch. I am an employment lawyer by trade and investigate workplace bullies and this taller guy is the definition of a bully. It had a very negative impact on the experience but I'm more worried about how humiliating and awful it is to work with this man. 3. The hotel is next to a working quarry. If you want to hear banging and clanging all day - then stay here. I didn't love the view of the airport and worried about airport noise but that wasn't nearly as bad as the clanging and banging of the quarry. My room 834 was the worst because it was right next to it. Not knowing there was a quarry next door I went to the front desk after check in to ask about the construction noise and express concern if I''m going to listen to that all week. They rudely told me they didn't know what I was talking about and would mention it to the night manager (by the way - the night managers were awesome). They dismissed this concern and it was very loud. Bang bang bang all day long. Even on the beach you can hear it. We liked the all inclusive. If you don't do the all inclusive Breakfast for $22 is a huge deal and you could skip lunch. Overall the food was good and good vegetarian options too which I liked. The island is very safe and that was good too.

Our long awaited vacation did not disappoint!

We were a party of 4 retirees staying for 10 days and Grotto Bay was everything we had hoped for. Rob (General Manager) and his management team were very approachable and amenable, going above and beyond in all areas. In fact , the whole staff are the epitome of how hospitality teams should work; with special thanks to Wendell at the front entrance, Mathew the Maître D, and waiting staff Esteban, Raymond, Liviu and the lovely Lencia to name but a few - all of whom made our stay special. Our ocean view rooms were clean and comfortable and the food was excellent, with great choices at every mealtime. We dined most evenings in the Hibiscus Restaurant, even though one of us preferred the menu from the Palm Court - there was no issue to 'mix and match' from either menu in the restaurant. The travel passes issued by the hotel on our all-inclusive package were very well received and we made full use of them, as Bermuda has an excellent public transport system which is very easy to manage for both the busses and ferries. David (Night Manager) helped hubby out with transport to take him rock fishing one evening, as the hotel's usual fishing charter supplier was not contactable. David then personally contacted another fishing charter owner, explaining his dilemma, and told him where hubby had gone fishing, who then drove out to see him and gave him some advice and guidance on rock fishing the area. Unfortunately though, he was not able to accommodate hubby on one of his own trips, due to being fully booked for the remainder of our holiday. The onsite self-service laundry was also a bonus which meant I could wash said smelly fishing clothes before packing! If I were to have any negatives of the resort, it would be the amount of steps at the resort, which we were unaware of, so if you have mobility issues, you might want to check out if it is suitable for your own needs. One of our party is visually impaired and he found it very difficult to navigate and negotiate the differing uneven steps and slopes around the property. Although he is normally fairly independent, he did struggle, and the 'rustic' handrail down to the Bayside Grill/Pool/Beach was not very practical nor sturdy. Having said that, we did manage with him overall. I realised on my return flight home that I hadn't packed my camera's SD cards which I'd kept in the safe in a tiny black wallet, so contacted the hotel immediately who re-checked the safe and found them! Rob then arranged to post them to me, so our holiday memories are safe - thank you!

Wonderful vacation!

Voyage495400 (Saint Louis, Missouri) on Jun 15, 2022

We had a wonderful week in Bermuda! The resort was lovely. If possible I would give the friendliness of the staff a 10+. We ate out a few times and found the cost of the food at the resort to be a little less and very delicious. My husband and I had a massage at the spa. It was fabulous. The cave experience was quite unique! We would also recommend snorkeling with the dive boat. They took us 9 miles out to a beautiful coral reef. My one suggestions is to improve the gym equipment. It is a small facility and three of the machines were not in working order.

Perfect mix of old and new

X5315PQdavem (Worksop, United Kingdom) on Jun 15, 2022

Rooms are comfortable, clean and more than suitable for a vacation. All staff in every area were really friendly, helpful and genuinely interested if you asked them anything. If you asked how to get somewhere they would ask if you enjoyed it the next time they saw you. Visit a bar twice and the bartender knows what you want . The main hotel block is like travelling back in time to the colonial age . Palm trees , polished wood, brass and ceiling fans from a bygone age. Truly amazing hotel. Breakfast and evening meals are in the main hotel , breakfast has plenty of choice for all tastes ,and top ups of juices and coffee.Main meal is waiter service and again has an excellent if small menu. Swimming pool not very large but not overcrowded in early June , Bar and lunch time restaurant were clean and the food varied and presented well. The beach is stunning. We went to horseshoe Bay , to tick it off the bucket list , it is beautiful but the waves are fairly strong compared to Grotto Bay. There is so much to do in Bermuda and so many places to visit, we did the ones on our list , We will be returning to Grotto Bay because the Hotel deserves so much more time rather than just being a base to visit A Beautiful island . Tip , go on a bus ride to St George’s or Hamilton and see how long it takes before you reply to a local getting on the coach and shouting “ Good morning everybody “
