Seadust Cancun - Come here for the views, endure the rest.

Road20300177988 on Jan 18, 2025

Usually, you write the TL/DR at the end, but I think the only word that describes this hotel best is neglected, once something breaks, it will stay that way. The Seadust claims to be a family-friendly 5-star resort, but somehow, 5 stars should be understood more like 2 stars. As soon as you enter the lobby you feel a certain dampness in the air, which is fine since you are in a humid country, but it is more a mildew in the air feeling than the usual hot humidity. As you walk through the structure to find a working elevator, of the 6 guest elevators on-site, 3 were working throughout your weeklong stay. You will find puddles on the ground, even on the higher floors, that will most likely be in the same place the next time you walk past that area. Rooms can be best described as Dated with dust piled up higher than I even could manage in my dorm room back in the day. But as soon as you walk out on the Balcony you get rewarded with stunning views of the ocean and the Bay on the other side, then you look down and see the vacant lot next door that is littered with garbage and the odd lounger that was of the same kind than the one you see on your balcony… so whatever happened, some guests might just have needed more space on their balcony. We arrived a bit later at night only to find that there was no way to take some food up to the room for our little kid to get something in his stomach before bedtime. But when I went down to the Buffet and asked if I could just take something for him to the room, I was told that this wouldn’t be possible and that I could order room service for a small charge of $10 USD. So yeah, go for an All-Inclusive vacation and get dinged with the first upcharge right away. So, this is what we proceeded to do. The food was ok, a bit cold but I thought it might have been from the fact that it needed to be brought up to our room. Little did we know at that point that this might have been the hottest food we would see throughout the stay. They come through daily to “clean” the room but somehow miss cleaning the floors or the bathrooms completely, so let’s be courteous and say, you get your bed made every day. The Bathroom is ok sinks were cracked and some tiles were also cracked or missing. Electrical wiring coming out of the ceiling as well. The shower reminds you more of a mid-80s highway motel in Florida with exposed plumbing and even the towel holder falling out of the wall in the middle of the night. Balcony doors aren’t really sealed off, so you get the interesting nature phenomenon of being completely drenched from sweat during the night while at the same time shivering from the AC. One night when there was a storm brewing over you could hear the wind whistling through our room. Starting at 8 am on the first morning get ready to be bombarded with phone calls in your room with people trying to get you to attend their complimentary breakfast (still an all-inclusive resort, so I do not get where the perk in this would be in the first place) to sell their timeshare experience. We have been to Resorts in Cancun before and know the spiel with the timeshare stuff, but never have we experienced it in such an aggressive way and constantly trying to get you to attend their presentations. So, if you feel like you want to have fun with it, bring some balloons or party utensils and tell one of the people chatting you up that they are lucky number 50 for the day. (hint: they don’t like that either) But yeah, you should get ready for them to upsell you stuff at every chance they get. Even when you just try to get your pool towels you will need to fight them off trying to sell you sales presentations, activities, excursions, etc. Once you finally get to the pool, you will find about 100 loungers that are already blocked with a towel or some other belonging by 7 am sharp, after that, good luck in finding a spot, and I am not talking about a good spot, you will find no place to sit or put your towel down period. Given that around 100 chairs in a place that has 500+ rooms is a game of diabolical musical chairs in the first place. You could move down to the beach, which is pretty small, so I would guess 30’ from the stairs to the waterline, which isn’t really a safe place for small kids to play as well. As soon as you enter the water, the depth increases by around 4’ out of nowhere so kids playing with the waves isn’t happening. No fault to the Hotel here, just the way the shoreline is. The reason why we decided on this Hotel originally was the Kids' play area, which, after seeing it in person, I wouldn’t recommend for any child under 4, and even then, you might want to make sure your kid had their tetanus shots before. Water is freezing cold so shivering kids are no rare sight and the whole structure is full of rust and leaks with broken-off pieces on the side leaving exposed sharp edges for the little ones to step on. So, after taking him there we decided that this was probably not the best thing for him to experience. The Play area next to it is in a sub-level of the area which gives up more dungeon-like vibes. All are carpeted with turf, exposed electrical wires coming out of the walls, and swing sets without swings or a ladder to climb up to the slide it is fine if you just want to little ones running around but no place for them to play by themselves. The daycare (babysitting) area they offer was unstaffed for the week we were there but looking into the room it was just a 50” TV on the wall with another few wires hanging off of it to the ground, so not really something to consider in my opinion. When we tried exploring the soccer and tennis courts, those were closed under maintenance as well. Food-wise you have some options besides the buffet which is basically a toddler's dream with mostly microwaved dishes a la chicken nuggets and mac and cheese in different shapes and sizes so that the adults can have their share too. Everything you will find at the Buffet is also served lukewarm if you are lucky. Once you go into the meat department, as for fish and chicken, expect pink and undercooked since the main understanding seems to be that heat lamps work as ranges if you leave the food long enough under there. Only Beef seems to deserve proper cooking, which in their case is hellfire, so if you like your steak well done, get ready for the most well-done piece of rubber you ever had. The specialty restaurants offer much of the same as the buffet with the small section on the menu allowing you to order “premium” for an upcharge of course. Also to be fair the Asian place was the only Restaurant where we received decently warmed-up food, so it pays off to wait in line to get a table. The Kids' menu usually consists of microwaved pasta with meatballs and microwaved frozen pizza hotdogs that let every 7-Eleven look like fine dining. If the arguably best quality food, we had in the whole week of staying there, was some boneless wings at a Hooters at the La Isla plaza while waiting for the merry-go-round operator to return it probably says it all. Back to the rooms… after some odd cockroach encounters in the bathroom and finding some bites on us and the kid (bedbugs), we decided to cut our losses and end this stay early. When we tried to just leave early and check out a couple of days prior (not demanding any money back or whatever) they would only let us check out after signing a waiver that it was not their fault that we left early. I traveled to many countries and had to check out early on some occasions due to work or other commitments but never have been presented with such a waiver. So apparently, they know full well what they have there and willingly neglect the health and safety of their paying customers.

Amazing week with the kids!

Stéphane M on Jan 11, 2025

Nothing to say, was a great week with our 2 kids and friends. We are from Quebec. Food was great and we had a great variety. Lot of activities for the kids and the shows were amazing. The hotel is a bit older, everything was clean and functional. If you are picky to details, maybe it’s not the right resort for you but otherwise we are very satisfied and recommend. Don’t get fool with all the comments. We travel once or twice a year and we visited a lot of resorts
