Not bad, not great

Just returned from a 10-day stay in a "premium" room at the Allegro on Cozumel. Here are my thoughts. We did not use the spa, children's area, or attend the disco or theater at night so cannot comment on those items. "Premium" room: We were on the ground floor with a small patio in front of the room that had a small dive gear hanger, hammock, and 2 seat patio set. The room was small compared to other hotels we have stayed at on Cozumel. Housekeeping services were superb, the room was very clean. We asked for extra water and were given 12 bottles daily. The fridge was more like a wine cooler and did not keep things cold, which was a common theme throughout the complex. There was a coffee maker in the room. The AC worked well and there was an overhead fan. Bathroom: The shower and toilet were in a separate room from the sink vanity, with a window, which I liked. Water pressure was good with plenty of hot water, although the temperature varied from cold to warm to hot during each shower. The shower head worked well. There was a built-in clothesline in the shower. Closet: there were 4 open cubbies with a safe in the top cubby, a closet rod with hangers next to it and luggage rack. On the small side, but adequate for the 2 of us. Beach: Beautiful with adequate chairs and shade. Pools: Were very clean, lots of chairs but a little bit short on shade umbrellas. The activity pool was lively and lots of fun. The quiet pool was perfect for relaxing. We did not use pool that is exclusive to the premium rooms because we were there with friends who did not stay in the premium section. It's a very small pool. Grounds: Very well kept grounds, always someone working on the landscaping. There were a lot of smells. A slight sewage smell permeated everywhere at all times. We also smelled paint smells a few times. And one late afternoon maintenance came out with the insect fogger and fogged everything, including the hanging dive gear and bathing suits on the patio. That was not good. Noise: We were not bothered by any resort noise in the premium section. But buildings are close together so you were right in the face of your neighbors on their balconies and patios. Bar service: Always excellent and fast for us at all bars. Sports bar was enjoyable for lounging after dinner with occasional mellow entertainment. Food: I'm a fussy eater, my husband is not. While we could always find something to eat and didn't expect 5-star cuisine, the quality was less than desirable. The meat was typically overcooked, the eggs on the breakfast buffet typically undercooked, nothing was ever really hot. Fruit did not have much flavor. However, the salad bar was always pretty good and the breakfast made to order grill was good. We ate at the Italian restaurant and it was horrid with meat either way over done or still mostly raw. We ate at the Hibachi restaurant and it was excellent. Staff: Always polite, happy and attentive. Taxis: Expensive to go into town, $20-25 one way. But courteous drivers, except for the rude female driver in car #157 who charged us an outrageous $55 to go from Lobster House in north end back to Allegro! Other nearby places we ate: Alberto's down the road, Iguanas across the street, and Gusto's about 10 minutes drive north of Allegro. Gusto's was memorable for great food, huge portions, and excellent ambiance. Would we return to Allegro? Possibly if we were with friends who really wanted to stay there. But our preference is closer to town for a more varied experience than just sitting on a resort, and better food choices.

Cristian Alfredo Rodrigo is amazing. Great waiter and so friendly. Actually I wish I knew all their names because they are all great. Only have great things to say about the entire staff. From entertainment ,hostesses, bell boys, bar tenders to check in staff. All amazing
