60th Birthday Celebrations in Hawaii

David R (Preston, United Kingdom) on Jan 31, 2023

This was a very disappointing stay at the Holiday Inn Express Waikiki Beach. Pros : The staff are extremely helpful, welcoming and friendly from reception, housekeeping and breakfast team. The beds are very comfortable and we had a great view of the beach from our room. Great location with only 10 minutes walk to beach and restaurants Reasonable pool area for relaxing, but beds are soon full and sun is only on pool for approx 4hrs. Breakfast is above average for Holiday Inn Express standards. However, the hotel need to control the waste of food taken by guests and then discarded, along with the quantity of food guests were taking out of the restaurant, as it was clear people were taking enough food to supplement other meals later in the day. Cons : Far too much building work noise during the day from two diagonal building sites makes it impossible to relax by pool - even with ear plugs! Room air conditioning units are very old and extremely noisy - it is impossible to sleep even with ear plugs Temperature control units in rooms are not connected to air conditioning units - you need to reach inside the a/c housing to be able to switch off the a/c with no fan speed control working on the unit. Rooms are extremely small and bathroom space is a nightmare - we stayed 7 nights and found the room very depressing and not somewhere you want to rush back to at the end of a busy day. Hotel policy is only to change the bed linen every four days and towels every alternate day. We had one change of bed linen over our 7 day stay! Note, no letter, or card in room to explain the room service schedule and no option to leave a card on your bed to request a change of linen. Such a bad policy to make guests have to request room service considering the daily rate on this hotel. Street noise also keeps you awake (if you turn off a/c) due to single glazing windows. Conclusion : Great customer service and reasonable budget style breakfast choice. However, I would recommend paying extra to stay in better hotels with larger rooms where you can sleep with air conditioning.

STEMB Family Group

Valerie E (Montgomery, Alabama) on Jan 25, 2023

My family and I enjoyed ourselves tremendously in Waikiki, stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. The Staff was very pleasant attitude, friendly, thoughtful and attentive to our every need, very respectful, considerate and accommodating, they went out of their way to make our family feel right at home as well as other customers. The Hotel itself was really nice. Even though the rooms were small, it was still cozy and comfortable. My family stayed there for 8 days and loved every minute of it. I have to give a special recognition to Ms. Kathy Ahsam and Ms. Natalie Caceres for their assistance in the preparation for my families coming to stay at Holiday Inn Waikiki. Honolulu. Hawaii. They were a joy to work with and two of the most kindest, warm and generous professionals I know. The front desk staff was a joy to work with also. Omar, Cheryl, Gladys. Virginia. and Irene. Of course they weren't the only ones who made our stay an enjoyable one; however, some of the names I can't recall, but the whole staff was very professional and kind. There is so much to see and do and it's all within walking distance from the Holiday Inn Express, Waikiki. We did a family Karaoke party, Cheesecake factory, Best Barbeque, Beaches close by, and the best front porch style ever for just relaxing and talking with family. We had the BEST time in Waikiki at the Holiday Inn Express off 2058 Kuhio Avenue.

Additional costs

My daughter and I stayed here for 12 nights from 18th December. We were happy with most aspects of the hotel. Breakfast was included but after the first day experiencing crowded breakfast area which included other guests coughing and not practising good hygiene given that Covid is still an ongoing issue - we chose not to have breakfast at the hotel again. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The main complaint I have is being charged a daily amenities fee of $US30 when we did not use these amenities during our stay. I will be contacting the Hotel to request a refund.

You get what you pay for!

This hotel does not pretend to be other than a budget hotel in a very expensive area. The location is one of its strengths being a 10 minute walk to the beach. However, its main positive is its staff who work extremely hard servicing so many guests. Especially, the Pool side and Reception staff who helped us so much. Especially Sheryl and ? Who helped us move so effortlessly and with great empathy. Now the negative.  At the time of our visit (mid January 2023) there are major building work being under taken on 2 adjacent hotels either side of the hotel. This means that there is continual drilling, deliveries and noise from these building sites. If it's not one side it's the other or worse still, both. Thus making sitting at the Pool a little torturous. This isn't the Hotels fault but would have been good to have known before hand. The hotel has a number of inherent design flaws. The first having been previously commented upon being noise.  Each room has an individual AC unit in the window facing the head end of the bed. This creates an open vent to the noisy roadway outside. There is therefore no noise insulation. We initially stayed on the 11th floor but the road noise was too much. We then asked the amazing Reception staff if we could move (this being 11pm at night). The lady on duty quickly and efficiently moved us to the 25th floor without any drama.  This leads to the 2nd design flaw. There are 6 lifts in the building. None of them go directly from the lobby to the 25th floor. So if we were in the pool on floor 5 we have to wait and catch a lift to the lobby, change lifts at the lobby to floor 26 then walk down stairs to floor 25. Then repeat the process to get back to the Pool. 3rd design flaw. From our room on the 25th floor there is a constant and repetitive noise coming from the lift switch room. Every time a lift either goes up or down there is a " durr..dunt" sound. When we asked reception if we could move, yet again they were brilliant and arranged for this to be done the following day. At the time of our visit there were a number of large school groups staying. Their behavior was impeccable and credit to the staff taking care of them. However, this meant there were large ques at breakfast and a shortage of tables. We were offered take out boxes and requested to eat in our room. However, with the lift trials described above we managed to find seating. The breakfast area was extremely busy and crowded. Staff worked tirelessly to replenish items and remove plates ect. Shout out to these staff who remained patient and pleasant despite being over run.  The pool on the 5th floor is mainly in the shade of the building. This is fine on warm days but obviously gets cold during overcast days. This brings in design flaw number 4! With so many external AC units above the pool area. Condensation from these units drip down making it feel like its raining. Depending on the prevailing wind some areas get more drips than others. We found checking the ground for drips a good indicator of where to sit. Again, with so many school groups being present. The warm spar and cold pool were full of well behaved young people. This wasn't an issue unless you wanted to swim of course! In summary, you get what you pay for. When booking, request a quite room above street noise. Be aware that the Waikiki area is incredibly expensive and over priced for what it is. If you are staying here the staff make up for any short comings in the building design. Overall, save your money and time and spend a month in Thailand for the cost of a week here.  The only saving grace being that every public facing member of staff was fantastic. Maintance staff were a little grumpy but they were run ragged over the weekend we stayed. I would have been far grumpier tbh!  Great location but be aware of the above before booking to avoid disappointment.

Terrible Vacation Spot

jefferyt517 on Dec 30, 2022

Parking was horrible. If you have a moderate sized truck/suv there are four spots available. Always taken by small passenger cars since they are up front. Asked front desk numerous times to enforce parking regulations with no luck. But we can park four blocks away at a different place for $40 and walk the four blocks was the hotels suggestion. How about the cars just move to the open spots in the garage? Rooms are tiny. Our bathroom was full of hair upon arrival. We travel frequently and have never been this disappointed with a hotel.
