An Okay First Stop

NickJordan2749 on Nov 24, 2021

To preface, my wife and I stayed 4-days and nights at Dreams Las Mareas (DLM) for our honeymoon and we are HUGE foodies and beverae snobs. We purchased the King Ocean View Preferred "Jr. Suite". While we were expecting a bit more of a "Junior Suite" and some of the accoutrements that typically go with a suite (e.g., couch, kitchenette, etc) we were a bit disappointed to find that it was just another room with an upgraded bar package and access to the Preferred Club. Like other people alluded to, the design of the rooms were a bit impractical. The shower door allowed water to flow underneath into the sink area and the toilet door was opaque and see through. Sure, a bit 'chic' but a bit weird when you're answering natures call. As I mentioned before, we are food/beverage snobs and were definitely let down by both. I get it. It's an all inclusive hotel with hundreds of guests, it's wildly difficult to serve even 100 people dinner let alone hundreds of people breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night. But the food was passable on the best day. If we had any other choice of food - say, being able to quickly go in town for cosados, we would've done it in a heartbeat. The alcoholic beverages and cocktails were plain bad. Watered and iced down to the point where it took me roughly 6+ drinks to even feel some sort of way. I spoke with one of the bartenders who acknowledged that the alcohol is either: watered down or that they limit the ABV. Incredibly disappointing. Moving on to the beach. The beach, if you don't already know, is state property which means vendors can solicit you each time you set foot out of the property. It's a bit uncomfortable to have to say "no thank you" to 2-7 people each time you want to lay down by the bay. They're at all aggressive or pushy, but it certainly takes away from a relaxed experience and the overall ambiance of the hotel. Speaking of commerce: during the check in process - after a many hours of international travel - the front desk will ask you to participate in a sales/marketing presentation in exchange for an incentive. Our incentive was a coupon that doubled our money at the spas. We were asked to attend a "breakfast" while we are presented with sales/marketing information about the resort. Well, we get to the presentation, get handed off between ~7 people who expected us to drop $20,000 - $90,000 that day for a hotel timeshare. Not going to happen. The sales people were very disappointed that my wife and I, who are in are late-20's, said no to dropping a minimum of $20k during a sales pitch. It's almost like they thought we weren't going to do our research before dropping the 5-figures we didn't even have. Even after telling them no multiple times, they wouldn't let us go. We finally had to say "We don't have money" for them to realize the opportunity was stale. By the way: there was no breakfast - just a bunch of alcoholic drinks served to those with empty stomachs. The redeeming factors of the resort were the pools and the experience surrounding them. The pools were multi-tiered, beautiful and well kept. Sergio, the Pool Concierge Manager, really was the best parts of being at DLM. Sergio went above and beyond customer service by hanging out with us, making sure we were getting everything we needed, remembering our names and greeting us like old friends. He was absolutely outstanding. In addition, our nature guide, Esteffany, was a fantastic guide for our morning hike. And while the spa was very over-priced (most likely them capitalizing on tourist dollars), I will say, the hydro-therapy spa and the deep tissue massage that I received from Monika was one of the best I've ever had. All in all, we probably won't be back to DLM - which is okay. It did what it needed to do for us which was to get our 'feet wet' (so to speak) in Costa Rica. It was our first time in the country and it was a decent stepping stone into the culture and community. I'd recommend continuing your research to see what else is out there but if you do decide to stay at DLM, you only need 2-3 days there before moving on to something else.

Nice Resort...but...

GoodwinLife on Nov 23, 2021

We just came back from this resort, the resort is nice and found the staff very nice. One thing, we didn't like is that the bathrooms. We had a "swim-up" room, the shower and toilet are separate which is OK, except for both the shower stall & toilet stall, have glass "textured" doors to them. You could "see" what the person was doing in each stall. My husband and I didn't like that we could see each other on the toilet. My daughter had a separate room with her 2 young sons (8 & 12)...so that wasn't good either. Also, the walkways at night are very dark, their lighting is awful.
