Below Expectations

Very Below expectations. ... We didn't get the rooms originally booked. Drinks are watered down at the Pool/Beach Bar. Pool is dirty ... they don't keep up with with cleaning the leaves etc. out of the pool or hot tub.

Great holiday!!

It is so interesting to read the different reviews and experiences people have had. Our family of 4 (kids 14 and 16) just returned from a week at the Occidental Tamarindo and we had a great time! We have stayed in several other all inclusives over the years and agree that this one is not 5 star. Other places (like Mexico) have mastered the all inclusive experience and the Occidental Tamarindo does not match those resorts if that is what you are looking for. The rooms are dated and much of the equipment could use an update (new tennis rackets please)! There wasn’t the attention to detail that can really make an experience feel special (although we appreciated the bottle of wine on arrival that we think was for our anniversary) and some practical things were lacking (like more hooks to hang towels), but if you can get past those things, you will love it. We were baffled by the lack of communication about daily events (including nightly shows) and staff knowledge about how to get equipment to play pool or tennis, but the staff were always very pleasant and tried to be helpful. You just had to do more work to figure things out on your own than might be expected. The resort was a bit different in that the rentals on the beach were not part of the resort and the gift shop was also separate. This may have added to the feeling of a lack of cohesiveness amongst staff at times. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The beach location is fantastic and wild and the surfing and boogie boarding great! Highly recommend doing a surfing lesson in town first though if you are a beginner. Howler monkeys on site were cool and the iguanas roaming and eating flowers were entertaining! We thought the food was great. There were always several vegetarian options (mainly salads and beans or chickpeas). There wasn’t an obvious vegan section, so I not sure about that. Omelettes were great as was the green smoothie. Drinks were served poolside and on the beach. The sunsets were truly spectacular and every evening people would gather on the beach to watch the surfers and sunset. Very laid back, quiet atmosphere. Live music added a nice touch. Not a place for partygoers but I suspect Tamarindo would have that covered! All in all we loved it and Costa Rica! (My husband wanted to give a 5/5). Highly recommend bringing sun shirts as the sun is incredibly strong and be aware that everything is pretty pricey as Tamarindo is quite a tourist spot. The night time turtle excursion was amazing (Discovery Tours) and the Day trip to Parc Nacional Tenorio beautiful but a long day!!
