Beautiful hotel, but not up to Fairmont service standards

ccollins0822 (Toronto, Canada) on Jul 01, 2022

We had a nice time at the Montebello. The hotel itself is stunning - the original architecture and the grounds are both beautiful. We enjoyed exploring the hotel, the grounds, and the area throughout our stay. Highlights for us included meeting other guests while sitting by the fire pit at night, and having some cocktails on the lobby mezzanine in the evening. We stayed in one of the unrenovated rooms, and it was quite nice. The decor felt more appropriate to the theme of log castle than the newly renovated areas, which use a very light carpet and modern light fixtures, losing some of the charm of the location. We were disappointed at the level of service, from before we arrived until the time we left. Before arriving I emailed the concierge using the email address on the website for help planning some activities, and for information about the availability of various amenities. They did not reply (ever!). We noticed on arrival that most days the concierge desk was closed, which I understand may be due to Covid-related staff shortages, but that does not excuse not having some sort of auto-response that the email address is not monitored. Similarly, we emailed the onsite restaurant using the address recommended on the restaurant website, to make reservations, but also did not receive any reply. Many of the amenities mentioned in the list were not available. For example, watercraft rentals, horse rides, and the historic building tour. The front desk reception did not go over this with us on arrival. Also, the path to the town is blocked by a locked gate, again this wasn't mentioned and we had to backtrack and find a detour. All of this could have been handled better. Some of the amenities are not kept up very well, such as the mini golf which is in a sad state. Others were not open (the pool) even though we had called the front desk to confirm availability before we left home. One positive was that our resort fee was included in our package, otherwise I would have been irritated to pay the fee without many of the features available. We enjoyed the lobby bar, the restaurant (for breakfast buffet and dinner) and the spa. All of these were very well run and offered impeccable service. We did have to remind the spa about the advertised June discount though - this should be applied automatically without guests having to ask. We purchased the lunch picnic basket and took it to the waterfront along a long area of grass near the marina. As soon as we set up and sat down, a worker in a ride-along mower came and drove around us in circles for 30 minutes. There were so many other unoccupied areas of grass that also needed mowing, he didn't need to drive around us making us feel like we were in the way, and bothering us with noise and fumes. This lack of attention to guest needs and lack of attention to detail doesn't meet the Fairmont standard. Overall, we would return. I hope that as we get past Covid, the staffing levels will improve and some of the features will reopen or be better managed and maintained. I will also avoid 'shoulder seasons' in the future, as I think that was part of the issue with the winter amenities closed, and the summer ones not yet open.

We were well taken care of.

The walking trails are a nice way to start your morning :) Very clean. The hotel is an incredibly cool building. Built in the 30's as a private resort for families (think Dirty Dancing) and is now a hotel open to the public. The pool was warm. Air conditioning worked well. Apparently there are "old and new" rooms. We stayed in an old room that we loved as it matched the atmosphere of the resort. It was lovely and had everything you need and more.
