Good Resort but Altitude Service Took It To The Next Level

Canuckrat (Calgary) on Sep 21, 2023

July 16-25, 2023 Room 4128 – Altitude Swim-out (south tower) NOTE: North tower swim-outs 4101-4115 have knee-level water (meant for small kids) but South tower swim-outs (4116-4129) has a much higher water level (about normal adult waist = meant for older kids and adults) Had a great 10-day vacation in mid-July (but the last couple evenings had tropical storm weather). Pro: Arrival: 20-minute ride from airport We arrived at 4pm = Easy/fast room check-in* at Altitude Cub area (snacks & drinks readily available). *If you are Altitude Club level, tell the luggage person as soon as you arrive at the hotel so not to waste anyone’s time Altitude Club = black electronic wristband for room / no key card needed Immediately booked all restaurant reservations with early evening times. Very clean room that was fully stocked with drinks and towels. Shout-out to our West Jet rep – George, he supplied great service and was easy to get ahold off when we had questions off the resort. Daily: Staff were friendly and approachable and try to ensure all our questions/concerns were addressed. If they couldn’t help, they would contact someone how could. Omelet bar (at buffet) & Smoothies bar in the morning. Rotating selection of open evening restaurants. Amazing service from the Altitude team – special shout-out to Jamie Room was cleaned daily and fully re-stocked with drinks & 4-6 large towels. Great selection of food/drinks with the free room service Beach was clean and never too crowded (chairs almost always available) Sky Bar available to only Altitude members in the afternoon (but open to everyone in the evening), and top shelf liquor available at all bars. Swim-out was best part of this vacation = shaded, with waiters coming to your pool to bring you drinks, very few people ever in it. Lots of room to play catch, tag and whatever other fun the kids wanted. Con: Almost no internet anywhere on the resort – best case there would be intermittent access if you kept trying and found a ‘sweet spot’. One of the last resorts on the strip = much higher taxi costs than we expected (based on last PV trip in 2017) The main pools got quite busy (and hot) by 10:30am, and good luck getting a chair in the shade unless you leave a towel as a reservation at 7am (note: use your own personal towel, hotel staff will take away any hotel towels left on chairs). If you are not in an Altitude room (no black wrist band), expect to stand inline waiting for 30-60 min at 8:00am to try to get a restaurant reservation for that evening – even if you are successful, it will likely be later in the night (8:30+). The two newer (main) towers are well kept but there are ‘standard’ rooms in the older, shabbier buildings – be sure to NOT get a reservation in those older buildings unless you hate air conditioning, fresh towels, and restocked drinks (atleast that’s what we were told by a few people staying at different parts of these older buildings). Food: Breakfast: Only buffet and room service available. There was a smaller selection than we were normally use to at the buffet – no bacon, pancakes, and a few others – but the omelet station made up for it. It gets vey busy by 8:30 (15-minute wait to enter), so for late mornings we would order breakfast from room service instead = the usual egg breakfast (eggs however you wanted) but included bacon, pancakes and more than what was at the restaurant buffet. Altitude Club Room: Snacks, desserts, and hot/cold drinks available throughout the day. Coffee shop: Wide selection of hot/cold drinks available, plus sandwiches and desserts. Visited here many times throughout our stay. Went here more often than the Altitude Club Room because of the much wider selection of drinks. NOTE: Found out after we left there was a sports bar by the Japanese restaurant. Would have like to have seen it, just so we knew more about what the resort offered. Lunch: Lunch buffet was adequate but again there was a much wider selection of meals through room service – wings, club house sandwich, burgers, chicken, pasta… The two snack bars by the pools did a great job of feeding people quickly with acceptably tasting burgers/hot dogs/nachos/fries/tacos/more. Dinner: Buffet: Only went the first night and was disappointed with quantity of items to choose from. The taste was fine but there just wasn’t a lot to choose from = we never went back for dinner. Room Service: Ordered once (as a late-night dinner snack), and there was a wide selection to choose from and arrived within the hour. If you can’t get in a restaurant at a time you want, choose this over the buffet. Ala Carte / all these restaurants offered 2-4 options for each appetizer, entrée, and desert. All had great service, but I have listed our families most favorite to least. Mediterranean: Went twice - Salad and dessert buffet and food from a grill. Enjoyed salmon the first time and chicken the next. Waiters sang Happy Birthday to my youngest = A+. It’s weird this restaurant is not listed on their website. Japanese: Went twice – A mix of North American ‘Japanese’ food. Tasty enough to come back twice. But don’t be fooled, there was no Teppanyaki entertainment. Mexican: Went twice – Smaller portions but tasty. Italian: Went once – Should have gone here a second time instead of the Mexican Grill/Steaks: Went once - Disappointed in the steaks received – asked for medium/well but got bloody and drenched in oil/water(?) Once was enough with other options to choose from. Excursions: 1. Vallarta Adventures offers a buy two get one free (you have a small selection for the 3rd free one – we did the ATV adventure) 2. The (daytime) Pirate Ship is very expensive for what you get, recommend only for families with small children or people that like pirates. Time Share Presentation: We were hardly ever in the lobby, so we were never asked once about going to a time share presentation. Summary: 1. Can’t stress this enough - Get the Altitude Club level service when you book your stay through your travel agent! No waiting to make restaurant reservations & best reservation times, better rooms & daily restocked fridge/bathroom, free room service, no key card, better selection & higher quality alcohol… I’ve read comments saying it’s not worth it, but what is less stress and higher customer service worth to you? For my family, it was easily worth the additional 20% (from a standard room) for the swim-out room, no stress about restaurant reservations or room cleanliness, and personal concierge service from the Altitude staff. 2. Don’t stay in the old buildings unless you are paying a very low price and don’t plan to stay in the rooms much beyond sleeping. You get what you pay. 3. Even if you are not in an Altitude Club room, pay the $5 delivery fee for Room Service a few times during your stay. You’ll be surprised at the selection. 4. Tip wherever you can. Staff treat all wristband colors well, so please tip to show your appreciation.

Ok experience

Jenn L on Sep 18, 2023

First off I want to thank ceaser who served us at the grill restaurant and Eleazar from the Mexican restaurant and the buffet! They gave us great service!! Rooms: our first night we get put into building 6! Our room was dark, no view, nothing in our fridge no water and it smelt old! I couldn’t sleep I felt like I was breathing in mold the whole time! I felt like we were the only ones in this building! So the next day we complained and the only way they would upgrade us is first we pay more or sit through a 90 minute time share! So we did the time share! For the first few days there we were getting approached all the time trying to sell us stuff or time share! I felt like I couldn’t walk around without someone approaching us! I got less hassled in the airport! Our new room!!! In the main building ! Awesome! But wifi is horrible Food was good! Asian restaurant wasn’t that great. All in all ok resort wouldn’t consider it a 4 star! And probably wouldn’t stay there again just cause of our first day experience.
